ELEGY OF ME hail from Russia and sent me their 2017 EP a few months back and, to put it simply, I'm fucking digging it. Generically speaking, they play ethereal, dreamy post-hardcore/screamo in the vein of Suis La Lune, Pettersson and Vi Som Älskade Varandra Så Mycket.
In 2016 they released a digital LP called 'Abysmal' which I went into with some unnecessary biases, as I saw "live" and expected some shitty recordings. First off, this is not the case. Secondly, these nine tracks are really good and definitely have an angrier edge than the 2017 material. Songs like "Steadfast", "Selfimposed", "Anathemize" and "In Absence" are, at the very least, much screamier with the vocals, but generally are faster with less atmospheric cradling. Don't get me wrong, those parts are still here, just in a lower quantity, as opener "Proem" is mad chill, as is the instrumental "Elegy" and most of "Conceited". Closer "The Halt" nicely combines the anger with the serene and definitely has its 'Demo'-era Saetia moments.
This 2017 digital EP is, at points, sensational. The best song here for me is "Metamorphosis" and it's beautifully layered verses that start at 30 seconds and smooth out again at the one-minute mark. The awesomeness climaxes at 1:35 with that opening gem of a riff opened up and projected outward with additional force, which brings me to my knees at 1:42 and again at 1:55. That shit is otherworldly. There's also "Sunnydale Smother", with an uncanny resemblance to much of Funeral Diner's work, especially that insanely good 'Difference of Potential' LP, which peaks at nicely at 1:58. I can't neglect "Neglected", which has more tranquil yet passionate passages, especially the midsection just before 1:30 and that sick bit at 2:04.
Both releases are excellent so I'm excited to hear whatever they happen to drop next! And thanks for the submission!
