*** PODCAST #198 Gus Caldwell (Ostraca, Absent Light's Guerdon) ***

Goddamn I've known Gus for about a decade at this point, and with OSTRACA playing ZBR Fest 2026 and then releasing a new full length the next month, this podcast was a no-brainer. I had spoken with Gus, Brian, and John as a full band back in 2017 (video interview linked here) but I wanted to pick his brain, specifically. You can check out a podcast that I did with drummer John by clicking on this text. Some things we touched on: Weird Al and our favourite UHF scenes, at time when Gus could not be outskanked, Gus' Red Hot Chilli Peppers cover band, a fallow period for the screamo genre, the June Paik effect, Black Metal and Medieval Associations 101, "big" vs. "meaningful", the Zach Hill school of drumming, the lowdown on 'Thread', recording and songs that aren't meant to be played live, album release show, remember Horny Al?, etc. Bands played in this podcast: A Recorded Dawn, Gregor Samsa, I.O., Mercy Necromancy, Peter Rehberg feat. Dennis Cooper, and Sangre De Muerdago. Listen to podcast #198 which is available to stream and/or download for free via this link.

Live Show Review

A few years back I did a podcast with Hamilton's CONSTRAIN (linked here) who took the local scene (one which I used to be a part of) by storm. Their emotionally charged live show is fucking intense, their breakdowns are nuts, and the intricacy/tightness of it all puts them in a league of their own. During said podcast I told them that I had just started a new band on Vancouver Island and that they should come play with us sometime. That time was this past weekend, June 11th (in Vancouver, but I did not attend) June 12th (in Duncan) and June 13th (in Victoria). It was a very expensive trip for them so if you want to support the homies please check them out when they play and pick up some killer merch from them (or grab stuff online here). Shoutout Matty.

CONSTRAIN
Good lord these dudes came out and brought their A game! Mixing sassy metalcore with vicious hardcore, the end result is a highly potent and highly flammable that explodes during their live show. Awesome dudes too? You betcha. New EP coming this summer!!! I still can't believe Jesse is alive I thought he was going to bail hard off that table at Brass Monkey.

LAKESIDE AMUSEMENT PARK
This Kelowna BC band was touring with Constrain and after their Vancouver show the vocalist/bassist Jade got sick and had to go home, so the band came with a fill-in bassist (the same that helped Constrain on tour!) and then Phoebe (guitar) and Matty (fill-in bass) did vocals on top. I gotta say I wouldn't have known they were missing a member as they sounded sick. Freyja from Coup D'etat also joined on vocals for a few songs on the Victoria date.

CADERE
These were supposed to be the final Mourn Recif shows but it didn't work out that way, which may have turned out for the best as each night I was told by different people that our set was the best they'd seen from us. Hot damn. We recorded the six songs we played both nights back in May so they will release on a 12" sometime this fall/early winter on Zegema Beach.

CSILLA'S STAR IS GONE
This local band is still very new but boasts members from a ton of sick Victoria bands including Coup D'etat, A Recorded Dawn, Wollruss, Bathtub Autopsy, etc. Their sets are always fast with almost no talking, just extremely vivid recollections played through an audio sample of people witnessing atrocities at farms and what I will just call death centers. This was the best set I've seen from them yet.

*** PODCAST #197 ZBR Fest 2026 recap ***

I sat down with my buoys Josh and Nima. We all play in Wollruss together and like listening to the new Ostraca album before its release. Josh spends his time playing in so many band it'd be stupid if they weren't all amazing, like A Recorded Dawn and Csilla's Star Is Gone. Oh also Cadere. Oh oh, and that unnamed metalcore project. Nima spends most of his time on Hillsboro but his recent indoctrination to screamo is now complete. We talked about every band (at least once): Csilla's Star Is Gone, Wollruss, Clay Birds, Carrion Spring, Othiel, Treewell, Terrifying Girl's High School, Cadere (ex-Mourn Recif), Coup D'etat, Fingerswoventogether, Serrate, Emma GoldmanMage Tears, MiekeNuvolascura, OstracaHillsboro, JiseiA Recorded Dawn, MauThe Names Of Our Friends, Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The DeadHetta, WallflowerCrossed, and The Caution Children. Besides every band that played, A few additional things discussed: dead cats, rollerskating at the screamo show, exploding heads, Red Gate the Hospital, Dave fights an SG (and loses), Yes I want to feed the goats, 2026: The Year of Spirit Fingers, Handshake of the Year Award, rolling ankles, Top 5 Screamo Songs of the last 10 years, weed puffer magic, etc. Bands played in this podcast: Fingerswoventogether, Othiel, and Treewell. *** ERETIA exclusive song premiere ***

ERETIA
"VIII"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of: Fall Of Efrara, LVTN, Kollapse and Isis

Bandcamp

album releases June 15th!!!

Back in November of 2022 I premiered "II" by the Cantabrian band ERETIA (ex-OsoLuna and Tempano) and I dug it so much that I snagged a few copies for the ZBR distro. It was wicked, pulsing, jagged, heavy, and melodic simultaneously, reminding me sonically of Fall Of Efrafa, Cult Of Luna, Rosetta, R. Josef, etc. and their upcoming EP takes this formula and saturates the listener in even more pummeling, crushing riffage with wild, primal vocals.

And that brings us to today, as I am premiering the first single from their upcoming one-sided 12" 'The Autumn of Civilization.'. It will feature four songs in 21 minutes, with the band returning to have "Papelillo" record at Cubil Studio. This project has also been enhanced by the participation of Scott Evans@gse on mixing and @matthewbarnhart on mastering, two people the band deeply admires for their careers and work with bands like Sumac, Neurosis, Pelican, La Dispute and Kowloon Walled City, among many others. The album artwork is by the incredibly talented @asatxasat. The album will be released on all formats.

The band had the following to say regarding the concept of the album:

"We lived believing we could bend nature's cycles without consequences, climate-control winters, import summers, and call oil dependency progress. Climate crisis, energy shortages, food and material scarcity, broken supply chains, and rampant speculation. This isn't bad luck or a passing crisis; it's the result of a model that exhausted the Earth as if it were infinite. We were warned for decades, and we chose to look the other way. "The autumn of civilization" is a metaphor; it's time to slow down, take care of what's essential, relocate our lives, and decide whether we continue squeezing an exhausted planet or finally learn to live within its limits."

(2026) ERETIA "VIII" (from 'The Autumn of Civilization.')

The song wastes no time moving into a massive section that Amia Venera Landscape would be proud of, as the combo attack of gorgeous riffing and shockwave chugs is mesmerizing. The song moves into a Maserati-esque midsection with a driving rhythm section amidst a flurry of guitar delay and echo. The band concludes with masterful and powerful palm mutes that absolutely crush the listener into submission. Fuck to the yes.

"these dreams are too big to hide and too doable not to do"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of: Hella, Pretend, Tera Melos, Storm and Stress, Mount Eerie’s wordier albums, Touche Amore, Postmodern Poetry, Cryptic Personal Substacks, and Walter Benjamin

cassette orders open May 15th, 2026

I have a lot of luck. First, I was lucky enough to play with I.O. at the first Wollruss show a few years back and it was like a religious experience. After building up enough courage to ask Maxwell Patterson if he wanted to be in a band with me, I was lucky enough to have him say yes (we play in Wollruss together now). Fast-forward to a month ago and he lets me know he just finished his new album and asked if I wanted to help release it on cassette. Now I'm also doing a song premiere on my blog. I really do hope luck is the residue of design, cuz if so I'm doin' a helluva job lol

On the cusp of I.O.'s new album 'The Beatniks Couldn’t Save The World', I'm proud as hell to give you the second of six songs titled "these dreams are too big to hide and too doable not to do". It's a jazzy drum rampage through a gorgeous and lush wordscape that brings to mind Hella, Tera Melos, La Dispute, and even Touche Amore. Here are a few notes:

'The Beatniks Couldn’t Save The World'
a screamo opera by i.o

it’s about the reformation and reclamation of memories transfigured into something supernatural

'The Beatniks Couldn’t Save The World' is the first vocal record by noise-rock drummer virtuoso I.O since 2023 and his first joined by long-time part-time live vocalist JP Meldrum.

'The Beatniks Couldn’t Save The World' is what Maxwell and JP call a “freemo” record - an obscure portmanteau of screamo and free improvisation overheard while on tour in Europe. That, or a "screamo opera". Max and JP connected nearly ten years ago as two of Victoria BC’s most idiosyncratic experimental musicians known for their proliferation, in adherence to genre, and seamless ability to improvise in a no-rehearsal noise-rock context. Yet, the riffs and lyrics on TBCSTW are carefully crafted, cryptic poems that harken to the beautiful post-rock/emo melodies of Pretend and the sardonic verses of Leonard Cohen by-way-of Circa Survive melodrama that find light inside the manic preacher delivery of JP and the iconic virtuoso chaos of Max’s drumming.

This is Maxwell Patterson’s 212th album and JP Meldrum’s 53rd. Between the two, they have collaborated with members of N3VEL, Loving, Hillsboro, Teen Suicide, Shake the Baby Til the Love Comes Out and solo acts like Colin Fischer and Dis Fig. They also play in the band Really Loud Free Jazz together.

'The Beatniks Couldn’t Save The World' was mixed, mastered, engineered and produced by Cody Baresich. The album art is by Robert Voyvodic.

In the summer of 2025 Vienna's ABSENT FROM THE MORNING HEADCOUNT released their 8-song/12-minute first endeavor 'compos mentis' and it seemed to come out of nowhere and fucking ruin me. The classic emo-violence sound is done extremely well, and that's not taking into consideration that it's their debut, it's just fucking wicked. It becomes apparent from the blazing-yet-melodic opener "i threw a rock off an overpass and killed a guy" before obliterating the listener on the following track "reclaim your tongue (massachusetts 1890)", which is arguably my favorite song alongside "thesis nr. 100: i can have a little blasphemy as a treat" that boasts a sick opening nice swing in its midsection. The rest of the album blazes through in no time, and if you liked the first three jams you'll definitely enjoy the remaining five! Very stoked to hear what's next.

*** TEETHONTEETH exclusive song premiere ***

TEETHONTEETH
"Famine"
exclusive song premiere

For fans ofMalevich, Long.Way.DownDeafheaven and Underdark

Hot damn today's new premiere comes from ma boyee Mathew Meyer (plays guitar for Athousandangelsandseven), as he did all the recording mixing and mastering for this as well as the guitar, bass, and vocals, while the drums were performed by Corbin Echtermeyer (aka the new drummer for Athousandangelsandseven). The two also play in Pedestal For Leviathan and Mathew also play in Fatalist, so although this project is different than those, the heaviness, intensity, and sick riffs are on par for what you'd expect from these members. The sound is a mixture of mathy metallic hardcore and sludgy black metal, creating a nightmarish combo that is as pleasant as it is destructive. This is being put out by loveletterstomyvalentine Records and CDs will be coming out soon. Kendrick Lemke (also from Athousandangelsandseven) made the logo.  Preston Weippert of Candy Apple and Of Feather And Bone did the art.

Mathew has the following to say about the EP:
These 3 songs I have been sitting on for a while and never really fit any of my other projects so I decided I wanted them to be realized because they deserve it and I’ve always been into these ones. Part of it was definitely wanting the challenge of doing almost all of this myself music wise. I’m super proud of how these came out and it was a big leap writing and recording vocals for me. The last song is instrumental, it’s the guitar mic boosted loud enough that you can hear my unplugged guitar over the hum of the amp.  Pretty cool candid little diddy.

It comes out Friday at midnight aka less than 12 hours from this post!

*** PODCAST #195 Mage Tears ***

There was a night in mid-2025 when I stumbled upon both Mieke and MAGE TEARS. After connecting with the former, I soon reached out to the latter and all of sudden both bands were set to play ZBR Fest 2026 in Vancouver! That's pretty nuts as Mieke is from New Zealand and Nicole aka MAGE TEARS is from the UK but is currently residing in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Nicole plays soft, gorgeous, honest, whispery, acoustic singer/songwriter in the vein of early Alex G, softer Mieke, and Cozy St. Jean and recently released "The World Stops for a Second" and a song on the 'Hiss 2' compilation. A couple o' things we talked about on the podcast: caps on "amazing", helicopters and tears, the Crywank endorsement, playing Skyrim with Grandad and the Mage Tears origin, the creative process of a song, scared of promotion, Dollanganger praise, a new album!?!?!, the Mieke connection, ZBR Fest 2026, etc. Bands played in this podcast: Alex G, Disassociative Youth, The Loner(s), Othiel, Stephen Brodsky, and Saram12Saram. HEAVEN THROUGH VIOLENCE
x
LETTERBOMBS
exclusive song premieres

HEAVEN THROUGH VIOLENCE

LETTERBOMBS
Bandcamp

orders open March 20th, 2026 via Dancing Rabbit Records,  Engineer Records, Fireflies Fall,  Larry Records, Severed Records, Shove Records & Vamonos Records.

Powerhouse split? You fucking betcha. HEAVEN THROUGH VIOLENCE follow their recent split with Rosemary Nods Upon The Grave (linked here) while LETTERBOMBS are fresh off their Lori split. The former features a member of And Its Name Was Epyon while the former shares two members with piot., giving both bands extensive experience and it shows. I've got one song from each band but the full split features five tracks from each of'em. Palla, the frame of story for this split, was originally written in 2001 by Ted Peterson as an in-game book for Bethesda softworks' The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Recorded and mixed by the bands in fall 2025, mastered by Logan Rivera.

(2026) HEAVEN THROUGH VIOLENCE "v" (from 'Palla')
People are always saying there needs to be more hand-clapping in screamo, so this song starts with that over stick clicks and a lengthy bassline. The song then shifts into a slow, epic climb that brings to mind scaling a mystical mountain...hahaha dead serious. The strained vocals and almost Caution Children-esque lead guitar take center stage until the four-minute mark when things shift and get even more atmospheric with some cool, stunted, rolling drums to help close out the song.

>________________________o_______________________<

(2026) LETTERBOMBS "ix" (from 'Palla')
Like most LETTERBOMBS songs this thing wastes no time going full-tilt, utilizing blazing guitars and non-stop skramz until the 40-second mark when things switch on a dime to melodic post-hardcore not unlike Twins.

*** NEAR DARK Fest Day #2 live show review ***

Live Show Review

I went to this show last night because all of my Wollruss bandmates were involved somehow. Our drummer Max puts on Near Dark Fest with his wife Lauren, our other guitarist is the vocalist for Hillsboro, and our bassist is the guitarist for both Csilla's Star Is Gone and A Recorded Dawn. As literally all of these bands are playing ZBR Fest I had to show my support, but hot damn this lineup ended up being one of the best band-for-band nights I've ever seen. All my homies fucking killed it, Palace Oaks blew me away and now I'm mad smitten, Figure Eight were freaking gorgeous, and Computer went ballistic. Scope the teaser/trailer below and then check the longer individual band videos further down in this post that include links to their sites.

CSILLA'S STAR IS GONE
This show was the first set from this all-star band featuring members of Coup D'etat, Mourn Recif, Bathtub Autopsy, and Hospice. They play kinda metallic, kinda sassy, animal-friendly power-grind. It's a genre, trust me. Catch them opening the ZBR Fest 2026 pre-show on May 1st in Victoria at Big Fernwood (tickets available here!!!)

(2026) CSILLA'S STAR IS GONE "untitled"
For fans ofFurnace and Callow

^\/`~~~~---------------00oOo00---------------~~~~'\/^

PALACE OAKS
Hot damn I absolutely loved this. Very Softseed Music kinda shit right there. Gorgeous ethereal, indie, singer/songwriter stuff that had everyone swaying and quite a few folks already knew the words and were singing along. After getting home I instantly checked out the new album, so good!

(2026) PALACE OAKS "bitter cherry" (from 'insular mountains')
For fans ofLow and Bok Suna

^\/`~~~~---------------00oOo00---------------~~~~'\/^

A RECORDED DAWN
This band just puts on a fucking clinic every show, I swear to god. They played three new jams plus the Zampler track, but the first two I had never heard/seen and they blew me the fuck away. I can't wait to get this LP and release it. This band is gonna blow you away at ZBR Fest (tickets here!!!)

(2026) A RECORDED DAWN "The blue flames of dead words" (from their forthcoming 12"LP)
For fans ofOstraca and Swan Of Tuonela

^\/`~~~~---------------00oOo00---------------~~~~'\/^

FIGURE EIGHT
This band came from Oakland and played emo shoegaze that wavered between hypnotic and heavy, sometimes combining the two. Really well done and the vocals were fucking spot on. Again, ran to their bandcamp this morning to snag their stuff, so good!

(2026) FIGURE EIGHT "hummingbird" (from 'until the sun swallows the earth / hummingbird')
For fans ofNova One and Smush

^\/`~~~~---------------00oOo00---------------~~~~'\/^

COMPUTER
I had seen this band back in September of 2024 and I remember them being awesome. Their seven-piece ensemble includes a sax player and keyboardist in addition to your standard fare. They're really quirky, sometimes chill, and sometimes chaotic as fuck. One of my fave live bands for sure!

(2026) COMPUTER "Dissolution Use" (from 'Station On The Hill')
For fans ofDesaparacidos and Moneen

extra video: linked here

^\/`~~~~---------------00oOo00---------------~~~~'\/^

HILLSBORO
Holy fuck. Hillsboro got fucking heeeeeeaaaaavy. These new songs really dip into the Deftones influence so anyone missing the super heavy days of that band are gonna fucking love this direction the band has forked off into. Warning: watch out for Nima without a guitar, that guy becomes untethered! They have a new GP releasing in late May on Softseed Music and play ZBR Fest on May 2nd-3rd (tickets available here!!!)

(2026) HILLSBORO "untitled" (from an upcoming album)
