This was supposed to be an exclusive premiere, but BARQUE posted the song a few weeks back so this is just a discography review. But what a discography! Errrr...should I say, what a new EP! 'Coffin Cutters' is a dark and heavy trip through sludgy, doomy post-hardcore/post-metal. It opens with the punishing riffs of "Path of the Hierophant" which is a crushing Ken Mode and Lamantide cross of oppressive, angry everything. When 1:42 hits I feel like I'm listening to something much akin to Lentic Waters, as they tie together the post-hardcore guitars with back and forth screaming which is the highlight of the song, and quite possibly the album. "Betrayed Monarch" is next, again taking no time to build foundations and instead trampling the listener right off the bat. At 36 seconds the song gets pretty fucking heavy and reminds me of Converge and Rorcal with the latter half getting a little more chill (just a little) with nods to I Am A Curse whether intentional or not. Track three, which was the song that was technically premiered August 1st, 2016 on the blog mix here, is called "Mountain Snakes" and is a shorter track at 2:17. The song descends into the depths of hell just before the one-minute mark but is able to balance it with enough slabs of subtle melodies that it is both pummeling and head-bob worthy simultaneously. "Absalom" takes the cake for the shortest, angriest and fastest song on here, so at 1:17 just take a listen for yourself. The closer "Torments" eclipses the five-minute mark and is a banger with a tapered ending that devolves into atmospheric noise.

In 2014 the band released a single song digitally called "The Necromancer" was certainly a window into which you could see the direction of the band's future. The song is driving, unrelenting and heavy, with more of an AmenRa feel than the later material, although the song doesn't even hit the two-minute mark.

I definitely expect big things from this band, as this is a stellar debut EP. Keep it up, fellas.

***мятеж Tour Diary - Day #3 Baltimore, MD***

This local house show was put on, played by and venued by the almighty Nick and June at their home in Baltimore. These two are 1) hilarious 2) welcoming 3) positive 4) supportive 5) amazing people. Their house and all the guests were fantastic, too, as were the noodles that Nick cooked up for us after the show and June's heroic saving of my stomach using some natural remedies. The band itself was only asked to play the show a few days prior, and they had had only a handful of practices so apparently their set was sloppy, but I didn't even notice (and wasn't told about this until later) that some parts were improvised due the songs being unfinished. The chaotic and abrasive noise/screamo was pretty damn awesome to witness. It should also be noted that Robbie from Eyelet and мища plays drums for this band. As stated above мятеж will be doing a split cassette with Synodus Horrenda in the near future so watch out for that!

Van Hägar was next and blasted the kind of noise this house show was made for. Dirty, raw and noisy powerviolence to the max, my friends. Instead of just embedding one song, here's a string totaling 4:58 so you can get a better grasp of the band's stranglehold during a performance. The crowd also got rowdy at this point and almost rolled into Jazzi's leg which caused me to have a near-heart attack. Luckily everyone had fun and no one was hurt! P.S. Jesse is god.

Simply put, this set felt amazing. I've linked up the set in its entirety, although you'll notice that the mic breaks at the end of the 2nd last song and then the camera stops while we decide what to do, right after you hear Jesse try the mic out and he ends up sounding like a goddamn t-rex. Once the camera comes back it is quite obvious that I've opted for "fuck that mic" and perform "That Plant Gets Me On A Deeply Personal Level" with no microphone. You'll also get to see people spitting beer on one another, posters being ripped down from the walls, and a fun side note is that I vomited in the bathtub after the set because I didn't have anything to eat before "going crazy". It was worth it. I've also posted the Ice Witch picture and her ice cooldown method, which I must say was quite sound. There's also a video of our new friend playing the kazoo right here.

Playing a very cool mixture of punk, thrash and metal, these guys are like the dirtier version of Edhochuli. They blew through some raunchy and blazing tunes in less than 30 minutes that had the room pumpin', shakin' as well as pouring beer down their collective crotches aaaaand tons of dope solos. There's a funny 30-second clip of our drummer Nicky doing the chill/spin hardcore dance which sent Jazzi and I into a small laughing fit. I also talked at length with a few of the members and we found we had a ton of friends in common. Thanks Balitmore!!!

A massively overlooked mid-late 90s screamo band, perhaps the first ever to utilize a violin, was Atlanta's PORTRAIT. The band created primarily emotive hardcore punk music with screaming and some chaotic, semi-mathy stuff along with midwestern 90s emo. And then there's that aforementioned violin that is there but only prominent when called for, like Respire's trumpet, and never overextends its welcome like some additional instrumentation (synths/keyboards, I'm looking primarily in your direction). Not only does the band sound like Sinking Ships...Rising Eyes because of the violin, but the rest of the music isn't far off, either, and could also be likened to You And I in terms of their screamy, emotive hardcore style. PORTRAIT released a demo, two 7" EPs, a 10"EP/LP and a complete discography cd in their six years together from 1996 to 2001. Let's start from the beginning, shall we?

The 1997 'Demo' tape is four songs of violin led emo with very unstable clean vocals. When the screaming kicks in the songs sound much more cohesive and full and as there is more of this than the warbling singing it's still a great listen and fantastic debut by the band. Should you jam only one song from this make it "Incandescence" as it has a strong resemblance to You And I and Inkwell, but in all honesty they are all pretty much You And I worship.

1998 saw the band's first vinyl EP released as the 'Portrait' 7". These three songs are excellent early screamo that is both heavy and serene simultaneously. "Once an Englishman" has a great intro with some clean and quick riffing and playful Saetia sounding bass, but as the song progresses there are certainly some weak vocals. It's also worth mentioning that the latter half of this song is driven primarily by the violin and it works out quite well. "Something in Philadelphia" is a cross between Inkwell screamy hardcore and Sinking Steps...Rising Eyes progressive and experimental screamo by weaving the violin in perfectly, especially during the opening minute. Following that the track drops off a cliff and descends into dark and massive breakdowns with multiple screamers, as well as that violin that makes the song additionally devilish. "Always Sacred" is a pretty crazy screamy hardcore song that might be the heaviest thing the band ever recorded and was recorded during these sessions but not released until the 2004 discography cd.

PORTRAIT's self titled 10" was released in 1999 and includes five tracks spanning 23 minutes, and therefore could probably be called an LP. The opener "Even Now" is a screamy romp through late 90s chaotic, emotive hardcore and is the best song here. "Quiet Company" begins with playful, instrumental emo and is a decent PORTRAIT song (think Saetia on this one), along with "Missing the Shore" which is most definitely very violin heavy. "Constellations of a Stargazing Iris" is nearly six minutes of driving music whose equivalent is an emotionally unstable rollercoaster. The 10" closes with "North Ebony" which also eclipses five minutes but is a very different beast, focusing instead on an instrumental, almost medieval-like first half, with the latter being quite the opposite and including lots of heavier, screamier post-hardcore.

In 2001, apparently after the band had already called it a day, the last 7" titled 'All My Chances' was released and is very 'Cryonics'-era Hot Cross sounding. The opener "All My Chances" is pretty darn catchy and repetitive so you'll likely find yourself yelling out, "try to forget all my chances!" Junction at Barcelona" is the chillest of all the songs and more of a post-rock/emo song than anything else. The closer "Less Sugar" is the mathiest and screamiest on here, and is my favourite all-time PORTRAIT song. Seriously this final 7" is fantastic and a fitting (although unfortunate) last offering from a band that was ahead of its time and still frustratingly unknown.

I'll make this quick.

I don't know much about FALL SILENT. I'm pretty sure I read a punknews review back in the day because their final album was released on Revelation Records and I decided to order a copy. I liked it. I didn't love it. I jammed it a few times and two or three songs found their way into my massive music archive folder of best songs. I've never listened to anything else the band recorded or released until writing this review, and having jammed a few on youtube here and there I'll just stick to what I know. Although I should quickly mention that 'Superstructure' might be even better than 'Drunken Violence' as it is screamier and closer to stuff such as Advocate and Destroyer Destroyer.

'Drunken Violence' was released in 2002 and is the bastard offspring of punk, thrash, metal and hardcore. The vocals are quite reminiscent of a screamier Zach De La Rocha during his Inside Out days with the pre-2002 material having vocals that almost border on Phoenix Bodies and instrumentation that isn't far from early Ed Gein. The opener (there isn't much to track 1) "Flowers for Whores" is my favourite FALL SILENT song. The crunchy and pummeling punk/hardcore/metal gets breakdowny as fuck 49 seconds in and adds additional weight whilst throwing in a little solo here and there once 1:20 hits. Shit gets really heavy at 2:20 following palm mute city, and the title screamed, "Flowers for whores, we smile cuz we're unaffected. Flowers for whores...". At 2:52 the song comes full circle and begins again with much more emphasis on the breakdown/palm-mute parts. Damn, this song is really good. "Seven Plies" sounds like punk worship of Slayer, but that breakdown just before 1:30 is fucking massive. The stop/start breakdown is followed by some eerie, clean singing that drives the song forward swimmingly. The closing at 2:18 is huge with lyrics of, "I felt invincible, like no one could touch us. You can't touch us!" "Barracuda" is a Heart cover and stays true to the original and FALL SILENT simultaneously, making it a very accessible song when compared to the rest of the band's catalogue.

So there you have it. Well...not it, but about 25% of the band's material. The rest you can listen to and jam yourself if this tickled your fancy. Thanks for reading.

I was already online friends with both Jake Letizia and Mike Van Buren from DISTRICTS. I'd heard the band's older material (pre-Mike) and liked it but wasn't blown away. What I saw this night completely changed my perception of the band. Guess what? They are fucking sick. I'm feeling quite feverish and gagging just typing this. The melodic and dreamy emo turns cathartic screamo throughout each song and the band played with hella passion and gusto, including Jake literally snapping his guitar strap and having to sit down on a chair for his guitar/vocal parts (hence why song 4 is in two parts, I had to find that guy a chair). They have recorded some new material and will be releasing it relatively soon, I do believe, so hold on to your goddamn butts.

Woooooo boy, our friends in Van Hägar got me pumped as fuck to play next. After nearly blowing out her knee the night prior, Jazzi came back like nothing happened and actually went even more ballistic this time around. The sound at this place was awesome and thankfully I caught my favourite song on film. Be sure to check out the middle of the song with multiple vocalists and a really cool switchover. Powerviolence meets a six-string bass, that is Van Hägar. P.S. Nicky is a machine.

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I had just met Mike Van Buren (of whom I'm a huge fan) who helped get us the show, plays in Districts as well as Det Ar Darfor Vi Bygger Stader and defunct outfits Ken Burns, The Last Forty Seconds and Who Goes There?, but this was an all around phenomenal experience in every way. The set felt really good, the bands were all amazing and the turnout was the best of any show we played. I also got to meet the mind behind Tor Johnson Records so that was pretty damn amazing. Here's a video of our first song, which was also the second song we ever wrote as a band and it's about humankind's inner struggle of reconciling technology with nature.
"Power Humvee vs. Cave Dweller"

While we were setting up the merch table, a very familiar looking fellow made a joke to Mike and then stopped, looked at me and said, "I think I know you.". I said the same and he asked if I lived in Toronto and I said no, Hamilton. He immediately smiled and said, "Holy shit you put on the Bloodpheasant show! I was in Bloodpheasant!" and we hugged and reminisced. I also have the final Bloodpheasant LP that hasn't been released yet and it's amazing. One more side note, a member of Weak Teeth bought the .gif from god tape so you know he likes great music ;) So...Weak Teeth. The band plays a hyperactive, heavy and driving hardcore. The blistering parts are offset by beautifully layered, soaring guitars and the thick, screamy vocals are occasionally spread across all three ax wielders. The aforementioned Chris can be found swinging around in every single video from pure passion, which is awesome. The superb drumming is also worth noting, as is the turnout that these four musicians brought out, which was the most out of any show. Fans of Joliette, Litany For The Whale and Lyed should take note.

I'd never heard of COLORED MOTH when I opened up my OMSB inbox sifting for new bands to review. The band cited specific references to this blog and bands reviewed, such as Russian Circles, These Arms Are Snakes, Animal Faces, Frodus, Cassus and Daniel Striped Tiger so right away I was stoked. Alex then cited influences ranging from Botch to Off Minor so then I began salivating onto the floor. Although the three-piece have many bands' influences present, COLORED MOTH has a sound all their own and it's eclectic, well written, challenging and fucking fantastic. Let's take a look at the discography, shall we? We shaaaaaaaaaallllll.

In 2014, about six months after their inception, they released a two song 'Rehearsal EP' with demo versions of tracks three and four off of 2015's 'Ever Dared to Dream Before', so let's just start in 2015. This five song EP was released on 12" thanks to Light Bulb Records and is a more than decent starting point for any heavy band. Noise aka "...the Tomorrow People" opens the record followed by "Night Skies" which weighs in next at a hefty 5:58. This song flies all over the place, but always transitions in a way that'll have you bobbing along and never leave you lost. By two minutes the song has really picked up and the experimental side crashes headfirst with the hardcore side, creating a beautiful and dangerous vortex of sound. "Craniotomy" is a very intriguing song that wastes no time letting you know it's going full tilt from the get-go, and I'd say it has a Ruptures feel to it. It also has some of the best vocal work that includes a nice trade-off delivery at 45 seconds in and reminds me a bit of Botch's "Dali's Praying Mantis". Wait...I just jammed that song too and they are definitely kin, and I mean that in the best way possible. "Duckwalk to the Edge of Space" has striking similarities to the bass-heavy instrumental songs by Off Minor and the quirky, post-rock/post-hardcore of Frodus and Shellac. "Tragedy on Saturn" takes the cake. It takes the wedding cake. Basically any celebratory cake. This silly joke just means the song is really good. Like, really really good. Beginning with Russian Circles worship, the song rides a sexy wave of instru-metal until 2:15 when the raspy, screamed vocals come in and the song breaks into post-hardcore goodness with hints of screamo. If you haven't checked out the active band Carved Up then I'd recommend doing so now because the two bands have a lot in common.

2016's 'Fragmenting Tensions' was just released on May 17th, 2016 via Twisted Chords Records. This thing is a force to be reckoned with. "Decay Accelerating Factor" is the first song on the record, most likely because it's the best song on the record. Beginning with some noodly guitars, the song switches to more straightforward groovin' screamo at 40 seconds (think Logs and Wild Guess) and at 1:24 the song swings boldly into These Arms Are Snakes territory with a building, sassy incline that booms big once 2:08 hits and is one of the highlights of the record. This breakdown has woven intricate riffs inside and leads back to the Hot Cross-y riffing by the song's end. Just fucking stellar stuff. Following that banger is "LZRDSNC" which is a mutated beast of noise. Sounding at times like Ruptures and at others Die Princess Die, with a long, weaving midsection that ventures into some very unstable and trippy territory. This 5:54 mindfuck comes complete with a stellar finish that begins its descent at 4:20 and brings venomous screaming and squealing guitars by the five minute mark. "Dystopian" follows with 1:24 of ambient noise, not unlike track five's "Void" and track eight's "Reminiscence". "Second Sight - Craving of the Id" is an interesting song (complete with serene female singing) along with title track "Fragmenting Tensions" (a jarring rock/hardcore song whose guitar riffs scream Rye Coalition) and "Fragile Spiral" (another bass heavy romp-a-tron) but goddamn that "Power Outage Monologue" is too good. The sassy and chunky intro gets me singing along to, "Is this what you call instinct?" in no time and is slightly reminiscent of a dancier Yage, which is repeated in the middle and again at the end of the song. In fitting COLORED MOTH style, in fact twice in the middle of the track, the band experiments with the parts resulting in it nearly disintegrating into nothingness.

Truly a unique and demanding listen, COLORED MOTH will reward you with so many different styles and awesome parts that you won't know what to do with yourself, thus causing you to repeat yourself and play their new LP all over again.

Today the (((((OPENmind/SATURATEDbrain))))) blog has the distinguished honour of premiering the new NINE ELEVEN music video for their new, fourth, five-song 12"LP. The second video released and this premiere is for the 6:33 explosion of post-hardcore/post-metal that is "Apocalypse" aka Theme D. NINE ELEVEN is from France, features the drummer from seminal French screamo outfit Amanda Woodward and have been releasing steadily since 2009.

The video is expertly shot and this video follows a linear story instead of having a million images slapped across your face in five seconds (an embellishment, I know). The song begins like a tornado on your doorstep, with no slow builds or a second to breathe. The video begins with some really cool slow motion running through a dessert during which a finger is pointing to and following two men. Just before two minutes the song takes an subdued, eerie breather and has one man flipping a coin in the dessert while cutting in and out of The Shining. Just before three minutes we are moved inside to watch a play shrouded in darkness mixed with some very uncomfortable imagery, such as the concoction of hard drugs and image manipulations of the dead sisters in The Shining. By five minutes we are brought back to see the two men, now buried up to their chests in the sand as the song topples and crushes itself under its own weight. Hot damn what a banger.

On Monday (aka tomorrow) the band will release Themes C and D on their websites tomorrow and pre-orders will go up at that time for the 'Sentinels' 12"LP also. The record is really just one song at 35 minutes that the band cut into five tracks, each with a unique and professional music video. On 9/11 they dropped the first video, called Theme B "Guidecca" linked here. After Monday be on the lookout for Themes A and E although I am unsure of the release dates for those. Member Antoine Grezel (ex-Amanda Woodward and Aussitot Mort) had this to say. "The album is a patriach and the figure of a son/student. At the end he appears to be one person lost in that duality."

***мятеж Tour Diary - Day #1 Boonton, NJ***

This opening act blew everyone away. Despite some technical difficulties on guitar, the band powered through about four songs of passionate, screamy emo/hardcore with a lot of softer passages. Bright Calm Blue, Youth Novel, Shizune and Lonely Animals come to mind quickly as decent enough comparisons. The band recently recorded some songs which should be up soon, and I'm super excited!

This was probably the best set I saw during our three day tour. Neo-Capacities band WHAT OF US has members from so many amazing bands I'm not even going to name one...except that I kinda sorta already did. Anyways, the band plays pulverizing, fast, raw and relentless screamy hardcore on the much heavier side, with little-to-no "pretty" moments. I captured the entire set as one 20-minute video so sit back and enjoy getting drop kicked in the face.

Shawn and Brad pummeled through a quick set that sounded really dang good. They played all newer material save the last song from their Capacities split 7" during which Shawn picked up a guitar mid-song. The first of the four videos that I captured is nice and far back and has the best sound. Afterwards I moved in real close and got some great shots but you can't hear the vocals nearly as well. Regardless of that, the band sounds better and better every time I see them and the new material they have been releasing is absolutely stellar. Be sure to check out the band as well as Shawn's epic US screamo label Middle Man Records aka the best in the game.

Our partners in crime on this tour, Van Hägar, set up next and rolled through about 15 minutes like it was nothing. Jazzi, Jesse and Nicky play bass heavy (6-strings, no less), cathartic powerviolence. Jazzi really steals the show with her constant movement, interactive stance with the audience while screaming and her words between songs. Watch the videos to see for yourself, but hot damn that's some intense shit. Sharing the "stage" with them and chilling together was awesome. A million thank yous to Jazzi, Jesse and Nicky <3<3<3

мятеж, the internet project turned touring "band", went our second tour in the last two years, this time based around the second Swamp Fest that was held in Richmond on August 12th-14th, 2016. After two days of iffy practices we played this set and it was okay. Watching the videos from the next two shows is a world of difference so I've just got one song of ours here. This is actually the third song we ever wrote (the first was never released, the second was "Power Humvee vs. Cave Dweller") and is about my parallel journey with a house plant that nearly died and came back to life, just like me when I quit drinking five years ago. Last year People's Temple Project lent us their drummer Eric and this year Van Hägar did the same with Nicky. Thanks so much Nicky, you kicked ass!!!

Playing a very imposing mixture of punk, thrash, metal and grind, these guys were heavy enough to make me a little scared. Anyone who likes violent, screechy thrash metal should get a kick out of this.

Here is one of two leftover demos from the very first THE WORLD THAT SUMMER recording session live off the floor with Lee on December 4th, 2015. This demo version of "What is Dead May Never Die" will be released on a tape compilation called The Stars Are A Free Show #3 on Glass Of Spit Records in the UK and then rerecorded for our split with Nionde Plagan along with the song "Moth Volcano". In 2015 MOUSE FITZGERALD emailed their debut LP '100% Mouse', which consisted primarily of emo/math-rock and, "I liked it but didn't love it enough to post. Send me your future stuff." And they responded about a year later with, "We sent you our debut album and you said you liked it but didn't love it enough to post it, and that we should send our future stuff. Here's our future stuff." Well guess what? It is fucking exceptional. The nine-track wonder is about 40 minutes long and is advised to be listened to as one song. For review purposes, screw that.

The first three songs on 'Mouse Fitzgerald Presents: Living Like a Mouse' are good but don't really showcase how awesome things are going to get, although they do progress and build. The drunken indie rock/emo on the first track, "Michael Cera Palin Comparison" is a decent enough time, followed by "Tropaholics Anonymous" which is an instrumental space jam. "DJ Khaled Sheikh Mohammed" follows and is a finger tapping good time that bears a strong resemblance to early Russian Circles material, which also means Dakota/Dakota is an apt comparison because just before 30 seconds the vocals chime in and are only partially screamed along with some very light, sunshine sounding noodling and chords which scream those two instrumental bands. "The Buildabear Group" is phenomenal and right off the bat is a dreamy, twinkly and screamy trip. The dual vocals and purely clean guitars slow down at one minute to inject some subdued singing (Sweetheart, anyone?) and atmospheric instrumentals that leap back into the night sky just before three minutes with those fucking killer semi-buried screams. By four minutes the song speeds up with some cool stop/start breakdowns over constant lightning drums. "Godsmack You! Black Emperor" is 8:31 of awesome post-rock, math-rock, post-hardcore and screamo. The opening clusterfuck is like The Reptilian but much heavier and shifts with little-to-no transition into a super catchy rock riff and yelled vocals. The mathy side of this lengthy piece of work is really interesting to listen to and simply a delight. From just past two minutes until the end of the song the light and airy post-rock/ambient screamo parts work really well as they rise and fall with sections of really catchy stuff jammed in there that sounds like a cohesive whole. "Deafheaven, CT" has the catchiest of all the vocals and are so beautifully placed that I have to sit down lest I get lightheaded and fall, with a final half that acts as a hammock made entirely of feathers that ensures you don't hit too hard. The last minute of the song has the chorus section again but they extract the clean vocals and substitute screamed ones instead, being quite possibly the only time in my life where I wanted the singing instead of screaming. "Egregious Philbin" is 4:20 of posty emo rock, "Unusual Circumcision Stances" begins like a sexy take on a Mogwai song and slowly morphs into City Of Caterpillar and "Hannibal Lecturer" closes the album in an anti-climactic way, but it's still a jazzy and jammy little ditty that is playful math rock.

Seriously, this band is fucking awesome. It's almost like the second coming of Sleepytime Trio mixed with jazzier Kidcrash moments with some North Of America thrown in for good measure. This year's album 'Mouse Fitzgerald Presents: Living Like a Mouse' is certainly in line amongst my top 10 of 2016 and I'm not the only one. So yeah see you again January 1st, 2017 when I post my list, fellas. It is truly a shame the band is dead :(
