I am very stoked to present to you the very first single from Milwaukee's SOCIAL CATERPILLAR new cassette/12"LP 'Alphabet Crown'! The full album will release on October 7th, 2023 through Softseed Music and the band.
(2023) SOCIAL CATERPILLAR "Smells Like Middle-Aged Apathy" (from 'Alphabet Crown')
The band had the following to say...
Kial (guitar/vocals): I wrote the song after an interaction with a family member who gave me a backhanded compliment about still making music at my age. It was heavy on the backhand and light on the compliment. After that I decided to write a song about their hobbies which seem to include complaining about people kneeling during the national anthem and justifying hatred in the name of their god. I don't remember writing the music so much other than coming up with the end riff that sounds like smells like teen spirit if it were in a 5/4 time signature and that's how we came to the name smells like middle-aged apathy.
Derek (drums): The song was recorded by Greg Norman at Electrical Audio in Chicago. Its our 3rd record with Greg. Our friend and collaborator, Chloe Corcoran filmed, animated, and edited the video. Its our 3rd video Chloe has made for us. The song also features our friend John Larkin on trumpet. Overall, we feel like this track is a good demonstration of our continual progression towards new sonic territories without abandoning our core sound, and we feel like it really sets the tone for the new record.
