Today is Dave Buschemeyer's birthday, and I've had this review on deck for a month at least, so today is the day! Also, Happy Birthday, Dave!
OMEN ASTRA is the new project started by Dave and other members of past bands of his. Their sound is post-hardcore/post-metal with strong doom and sludge leanings. Whole lotta chugging which switches out for cleaner sections to move the songs along, usually to the 5-7 minute mark. The vocals are at the forefront, and with just reason as they range from low bellows to high shrieks and even enough cleans to show up on nearly every song. With all of the parts together I would expect fans of later Cult Of Luna (especially the Julie Christmas collaboration), the Converge/Chelsea Wolf collaboration, and later Isis, to love this.
For a debut album this is seriously fleshed out and cohesive, but that makes sense given the members' experience. There are times when the singing overtakes the song, but generally the balance of everything is very appealing, with the cleaner moments giving us some time to recoup after the chugwaves. "Who's Been Painting My Roses Red?" is probably my pick for best song, primarily due to the incredible close with clean vocals and some keys, which all follows a very heavy and cathartic first few minutes. "False Gods" will undoubtedly have you screaming along to the line, "Salvation isn't a poem / salvation isn't a song / salvation isn't in words" by the time it closes.
I do believe there is more material coming so hopefully that sees the light of day in 2024!
