STATE FAULTS (formerly BROTHER BEAR) play a mixture of mid-western late 90s screamo, European screamo, neo-screamo and post-hardcore - primarily in the vein of Solar Bear, Caravels, Gillian Carter, Todos Caeran and Raein.
"Tigerlilly", the standout track from 2010's 'Head In The Clouds' ep, reminded me again how little experience may matter when recording a debut album - for the band formed the same year. 2012's 'Desolate Peaks' took the same approach, added some new dynamics and a different band name - and two of these songs, "Arrowhead" and "Faultlines", match the craftspersonship and intensity of "Tigerlilly". Unfortunately, both releases suffer from the same flaw - as the albums themselves are decent, but the good tracks are just plain ridiculous. It's a very noticeable jump, and I hope they will build and focus on this particular sound. That sound is a mix of Gillian Carter and Gifts From Enola Starfox/space epicness with screamy Raein/Via Fondo-style vocals. Screamy progressive post-hardcore. That sounds about right.
As I just mentioned, the instrumentals incorporate a lot of spacey moments that fade in or out the next epic part. This is most apparent in "Tigerlilly" at the 1:20-2:33 and here's a sample of said part:
Damn. That's good stuff. STATE FAULTS are still touring and writing so expect more epic amazingnessness. Lock Ness Monster.
