In a nutshell, a follower of the blog by name of Colin sent me the new MARÉE NOIRE EP and it floored me. I am 100% hooked. Housing four songs combining the screamo/post-hardcore of many French bands such as Aussitôt Mort, Amanda Woodward, Nous Étions, Sed Non Satiata in addition to Japan's Envy, MARÉE NOIRE has pumped out one hell of a debut.
2017's ''Encéphale'' Opens with "Devant L'Aube" which is distant yet commanding, with a cool back and forth chill section that starts 38 seconds in and leads to a fitting climax after the two-minute mark. "Révérence" is next and is my pick for best song, with the first half being piercing while the second half is post-rocky and littered with distant screaming. "Fuir Les Fumigènes" houses some of the fiercest vocals on the release and wastes no time releasing said fury, although the instruments don't match the intensity until 45 seconds in when a wall of post-hardcore and a steady injection of dreamy and spacey post-rock are added. Closer "La Dette" uses the first 1:25 to create a deep and sedating intro that meets with a beat and eventually flows forth at 2:22, settling into a dark groove just before the three-minute mark that is both sinister and beautiful.
Holy smokes MARÉE NOIRE, this shit rocks.
