"I just want to tell everyone about it."

The first time I heard VEIN was at Swamp Fest in the summer of 2016. I had been talking to the beautiful people in .gif from god and we were discussing releasing their next collection of songs and they told me about this amazing new band called VEIN, which happens to be the current split 7" that will be out in June via Zegema Beach Records (and a few other killer labels, too). I felt a very strong urge to hear the band, and was quickly rewarded. It was amazing. The only bad part about it was that the band I'm in played directly afterwards and it was intimidating as all hell! No it was okay, but goddamn that set blew me away. I have posted the two videos from the show after the discography section below.

I delved into their previously released material first, starting with the 2016 'Demo' EP (which is no longer on their bandcamp page) and was very impressed. It generally sounds like some kind of clusterfuck between Tyranny Of Shaw and Deftones. Opener "Old Data in a Dead Machine" begins sounding just like Tyranny Of Shaw but then slows things down a tad and even injects a little singing around the one-minute mark. There is essentially every kind of heavy vocal styling on "Quitting Infinity", which is a longer and darker track that opts for residency somewhere between metalcore and extreme hardcore. "Untitled" brings in those sexy clean vocals again after a deceptively pummeling beginning and layers them over screaming. This song is probably my favourite from the 'Demo' and includes an extremely screamy second half, although it's only 1:11 in length.

I then retraced the band's path further and unearthed the 2013 'Vein' debut EP. This sucker is amazing for a debut. Perhaps focusing a tad more on hardcore than metalcore, the five songs are still heavy as fuck and pack one hell of a punch. I think the fantastic Crestfallen are a good comparison on this release, especially "Spiral" and the much lengthier original version of "While You Weren't Caring". Their 2015 EP titled 'Terrors Realm' is a closer step to the newer material presented by the band. "Ripple" has some insanely groovy bass riffs, "Mirror Face" is ripe with juicy breakdowns, "Heretic" dabbles in darker experimentation but retains its amazingness, "Omnicron" sprinkles additional vocals and title track "Terrors Realm" completes the listener's descent into the bowels of the underworld. If you like this release be sure to check out Enkephalin.

The four songs I was able to help release on this upcoming 7" with .gif from god (out in June 2017) are even better than their predecessors. VEIN rips through said songs on a lightning quick four minutes, beginning with the brainfuck that is "A Crumpled Memo". In 50 seconds, this fucking thing goes from pummeling metallic grindcore to Korn worship to mathy death metal...and I couldn't be happier about it. "Progenitor" will be on the upcoming Zampler #9 compilation and is a destructive romp through mathy metalcore country. Used on the Zampler #8 collection, track three's "Ideation: Self-Destruct" is my favourite VEIN song. This thing screams Botch meets Psyopus and that is fucking amazing. The first half will tear your face off while the second will beat you over the head with breakdown after breakdown after breakdown. Closer "While You Weren't Caring" barely eclipses the 30-second mark but manages to fully throttle the listener before revealing a horrifying conclusion with those final three hits.

I believe the Boston four-piece are still writing for their first full length album, which without a doubt will make my year end list. Stoked beyond belief.
