With the resurgence of metallic screamo comes a bunch of semi-decent stuff, but only a few manage to rise above the rest, and NUKESOVERLASTSUMMER is most certainly one of those bands. Releasing a single self-titled EP in 2024, their five songs (one of which is of a different style) lean in the chunky, venomously spat, anxiety-inducing, dark, menacing direction with the most notable comparisons being early WristMeetRazor, Kiowa, and Black Nail. I also found the story of the band to be noteworthy also, as the two-piece studio project wrote and recorded the entire EP in just three days, with most of the vocals being done in a single take.
'nukesoverlastsummer' opens with "Anatomy of a Smear Campaign", a brooding and short introduction that serves its purpose, as it reveals but doesn't give the game away in its 2:06 runtime. Things get bumped up to the next level on "Whoever Gets to Shoot First Gets to Shoot Twice", which is drenched in panic chords, but holy fuck the nasty/massive breakdown that starts with a hand-clap is absolutely devastating. "Knife, Nails, & Teeth (Kiss the Ghost)" has mad Black Nail and Hallam Foe vibes, as it is full of huge bass drops, panic chords, and breakdowns. Following a crazy audio sample (from Gone Girl) to start the song "The trees grew because I died there" then goes directly for the jugular and comes away with a mouthful, as the chugging and dissonant - almost black-metal guitars and haunting vocals nearly dip into early Oathbreaker material. And that closing breakdown must've absolutely created pandemonium in a live setting. Closer "nukesoverlastsummer" is a somber acoustic number that gives you a bit of cool down time before the EP concludes.
In conclusion, this EP is amazing and had I heard it last year it would have cracked my best of list. So fucking good. More please.
