COUP D'ÉTAT 'What Happens After the Epilogue...' release show

Live Show Review

COUP D'ÉTAT
Goddamn this band is so fucking good. They played almost all of their new/debut album, and considering they've only been a band since March of 2024 that is some serious heat in a very short amount of time. Freya accidentally unplugged her pedals at one point and Lili jet-puked after the set, but in the end these are just vibrant little memories from the set and not detracting factors. A truly excellent experience all around. The band even included a brand new jam with the help of Devi from Lord Wrought and good got did that shit slap. The band's next show is January 12th in Victoria with a buncha other homies. Stoked!

JISEI
This Victoria/Vancouver two-piece unleashed mayhem (as per usual) with one of the most consistently animated and awesome performers (Leda). Mathy, grindy, intense, and sick.

LORD WROUGHT
I hadn't heard of this band but vocalist Devi introduced themselves to me early on so I was on the lookout when they played...and holy fuck did they kick my ass. Pitch-black hardcore with metal and screamo leanings who released a new EP back in November, but they played a new song and it knocked my socks off. These feet still be cold. "some people need to fucking die"

CORRODE
Ma boyee Dalton drums from this hardcore band, as he and I were kind of a pre-Mourn Recif two-piece whose time was cut short after he moved from Nanaimo to Victoria and the geography no longer worked. It was awesome to see him rip it up and holy fuck is this band 1) tight 2) technical 3) badass

FILIGREE SILVER GOD
Wooooooah nelly I hadn't heard of this band before but they are definitely top-tier BC screamo!!! Amazing three-piece with some exceptional guitarwork and some serious Swan Of Tuonela and Atalanta vibes that I think frequenters of this blog will drop jaws over.

MOURN RECIF
This was without a doubt the band's favourite set we've played and with us being a three-piece now our set options felt limited. If you live in Duncan or Nanaimo (or even Victoria if you're willing to drive) and play guitar feel free to hit me up at zegemabeachrecords@gmail.com

HOSPICE
Ooooo baby this three-piece (featuring Lili and Raine from Coup D'état) absolutely ripped through what felt like less than 10 minutes of bass-driven awesome-sauce.

*** PODCAST #172 Vile Hartman (Kid Feral) ***

I've been a huge KID FERAL fan since their debut 12"LP dropped many years ago I've been an avid fan, we even got to release their follow-up two songs on a 4-way split 7" (linked here). Recently they released their new EP 'Headlights' and played New Friends Fest 2024 in Toronto (which I also saw), so it was definitely time for ye olde tales from across the sea, matey. A sample of topics covered: pirate rum and sea shanty, honoring a friends' death, recording...forever, Setsuko is alive in well, the Fluff Fest coming out party, idiot jugglers, pandemonium at the money stack, needing punk music to survive, beard scratching moments, League of Legends: The Addiction, quitting music (for a bit), speech therapy, Nate & the Canada tour, LP #2, panini-overload, striving for a shit-era, etc. Bands played in this podcast: Emma Goldman (exclusive song premiere), Jeromes Dream, John Renbourn, John Vanderslice, and Magnog. Listen to podcast #172 which is available to stream and/or download for free via this link.

VIDEONAUHAT + CLAIRE VOYANCÉ
exclusive double-song premiere

For fans ofAlasVia Fondo and Raein

releases in full December 20th, 2024

Suspected Of Arson Records has a new compilation releasing this Friday on cassette full of Finnish screamo and by golly it's fucking fantastic. I had the pleasure of listening to all 16 jams and was blown away by the obvious strength of the country's scene. I won't ruin some of the surprises be sure to check out the first double premiere featuring new tracks by Alas and Suite Green here. Before we get to the Videonauhat and Claire Voyancé premieres here's a few words about the compilation from Chris (who also plays in Letterbombs and Piot:

"I’ve been the organizing everything from the start, but I believe it was Eetu (Letterbombs vocalist) who realized that there were enough Finnish screamo bands for a comp. But the idea came from just realizing that Finland had a ton of bands. So yeah, Eetu suggested the comp and someone else mentioned a fest and then people got to work."

(2024) VIDEONAUHAT "Nangijala" (from 'Finnskramz' compilation)

Featuring ex-members of Polemarch, this is the second track on the comp and it blew me away. I hadn't heard of this band but good lord am I following now. The section at 40 seconds is phenomenal, incorporating whirling riffs, lotsa speed, and great screaming. The rest is like Daitro on speed. Love it.

(2024) CLAIRE VOYANCÉ "A Thousand Year Voyage Guided By Compassion" (from 'Finnskramz' compilation)

This band's most recent EP made my ears perk up and then some, so I was stoked when I got to track 10 I was already salivating. Their jam begins more atmospheric and dark, but soon the fog clears and come 45 seconds let's the light shine through the clouds, with some cool guitar effects at 1:35. This band continues their upward trajectory at a staggering angle.
