***ZBR Show #8 - NOUVEAU / TERRY GREEN / FOSSIL / NANETTE / WIMP CITY***

On August 19th, 2015 I put on the first show I've done at the newly renamed Doors: Taco Joint & Metal Bar and it went way better than I had anticipated. The sets by Wimp City (hamilton), Fossil (guelph), Nouveau (chicago), Nanette (toronto) and Terry Green (mississauga) were all awesome and the turnout as well as vibe were very encouraging. NOUVEAU
Wow. When these guys contacted me to book the show I had already jammed their EP 'Langour' several times and had fallen in love with "River House" so I jumped at the chance to help them out. Turns out they were even better than I had expected. The entrancing swirling of the three instruments together are unique, cavernous, pounding and grooving. Think These Arms Are Snakes meets A Day In Black And White with some throathier yells is a pretty apt description, but that's literally all I got because this band is original-ass shit. They've got a Pittsburgh and Columbus show coming up so definitely go see them if you have the opportunity. They played a slew of new material along with "River Houses" and "Joaquin". I do believe they are recording once returning home. Lastly, the three of them are awesome people that stayed at my place and were top notch house guests - they even did the goddamn dishes! Love you Zach, Michael and Ryan.

TERRY GREEN

As per usual the Mississauga boys lit it up to close out the night. I was surprised, impressed and ecstatic that a large group stayed behind on a Wednesday at midnight to watch these young fellas. The band unveiled a new song titled "Rick Rubin" (I think) which was great. Matt's guitar work continues to excel (plus I know he likes La Quiete!) and the song shows continued progression with some neat twists that play heavily on the slow/quiet then fast/loud dynamic. As per usual Adrian as a frontman was both genuine and engaging, and his vocals were screamed to the absolute max. I've also found myself paying even more attention to Adam drumming when they play as he is a very talented guy. They've got a split coming up on ZBR as well!

FOSSIL

Although the band was without their second guitarist AND the fact that the drummer had a broken finger and a cast, this Guelph trio had the crowd moving to the post-everything/screamo with really thick and high vocals. I don't know what it was but I couldn't take my eyes off the bassist when he started swaying ...... They played a house show I help put on last summer and they were good, but they've topped that for sure. I'm really excited to see them play in September on the 15th at Doors: Taco Joint & Metal Bar with Shahman, Blood Pheasant, Harris Hawk, Salem Witches and You, Me & The Machine.

NANETTE
This Toronto band is one I've been trying to bring to Hamilton for awhile. The three piece jammed out with some screamy punk/hardcore tunes including a cover of "This Isn't the Tenka-ichi-Bud-Kai" by I Hate Myself which apparently was only recognized by myself. I got to sing along so that was pretty sweet. They informed me that they generally play much tighter but I was digging it, so I'm excited to see them again.

WIMP CITY
The bass heavy romping is really coming together with vocalist Vince. His brash, cathartic howls and growls mix really well the dirty bass (Luther) and thumping drums (Connor). The band is more confident and they had quite a few fans in attendance as well. Really good set and I'm excited to see how they continue to develop.

I do a lot of posts. Some posts probably don't do much for many people, but I know some are met with surprise and excitement when the band is pretty obscure, amazing and the discography is hard to find. Well holy fuck, this is one of those really good posts that I think most will start salivating over.

I first heard about DAKOTA DAKOTA because of a split 7" I picked up between them and Riddle Of Steel whose band members ended up together in Russian Circles. I instantly fell in love with both bands, this being the mathy instrumental rock with lots of time changes and jazzy finger tapping. This band was active writing and recording way back in 2003 - so throw away all those twinkly, mathy records you're dropping tons of money on and jam this 24/7. Not only does the band drop some great song titles (such as "It's Not a Moustache, It's a Mouthbrow", "Don't Pee in My Bed and Tell Me it's Raining", "Square Meals At Round Tables" and "Indian Givers, Cowboy Takers") but the music itself is gorgeous. How this band is not more well known (especially with ties to Russian Circles) is beyond me. If I were to liken them to three bands they'd be Piglet, Ahleuchatistas and the first Russian Circles 7" and 12".

From the Riddle Of Steel split that I previously mentioned, just before one minute in "It's Not a Moustache, It's a Mouthbrow" the thing gyrates like a sexy helicopter. What? Yep. The band generally uses clean instrumentals that bounce along, but the occasional electric guitar makes an appearance and does so just before two minutes and then shit goes bananas at 2:06 and sounds a lot like "Death Rides a Horse" by Russian Circles and is a goddamn banger. From their LP "Don't Pee in My Bed and Tell Me it's Raining" gets rowdy as shit at 2:17 and goes amazing Russian Circles meets Birthday Boyz. Dear lord of science, I'm loving every minute of it, even the haunting, trippy synths near the end that end up sounding more like organ. Such an epic song. "Bruises are Button for Pain" is an acoustic number that jumps all over the place and brings Maneli Jamal and Superstitions Of The Sky to mind. From the 'Hamburger Help Us' 7" the songs "Don't Forget Herpes Begins With Her" and the twisting guitar notes and rolling drums that begin at 1:06 of "Hamburger Help Us" get me teary eyed every time. "Hamburger Help Us" is also found on the 12"LP but the 7" version is a bit different, which I've dubbed the "demo version".

This is probably one of the most difficult discographies to find...in that I had to scour the internet (and ebay) for each of these records and the cd and rip them myself. Enjoy, this is some rare ass and amazing shit right here. Yeeee.

***FOXMOULDER / LA LUNA / LORD SNOW / JOLIETTE / LIFE IN VACUUM show review***

I went to an awesome show on August 6th, 2015 at D-Beatstro in Toronto. It was awesome. I've written about all five of these bands before and I have an exam tomorrow so here are all the videos I took. If you want info about the bands I've included some links for you. Seriously amazing, intimate concert with a super stacked lineup and lots of mad chillage.
