***ATSUKO CHIBA / QUIET LAKES / TELEPORTOISE show review***

On June 15th, 2014 I attended a concert at The Doors Pub in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. The small but cozy and intimate setting was great for 4 Canadian bands, two from Hamilton, one from Guelph and one from Montreal. Below is a brief review and my choice pick from each set. I have posted the show in its entirety on the Zegema Beach Records page which is linked here and below.

TWO SMOKES were pretty good, but one of the members got pretty drunk and was overly douchey after their set. Nevertheless, if you like growly heavy metal with some powerviolence and doom tendencies this may be up your alley. The lights were off so you can't really see them.

TELEPORTOISE informed me that they were from Guelph and that their post-hardcore scene is thriving. The band's songs can jump all over the map, but stay true to the (possible) influences of Primus, Isis and Mare if they loosened their playing style and incorporated more caveman, chanting and tribal stuff. Definitely in the stoner-metal/doom/post-hardcore realm. The last song the band played blew my socks off, but unfortunately was much better than their other songs, which were alright. If they record this song (which I believe they are in the midst of doing) I'll post it right away because it's a beauty. Check about 80% of it below, as I missed the first 2 minutes. Also, the lights are low here but you can make the band out better than the first video - especially when the guitarist goes ballistic mid-song and starts running around the room.

ATSUKO CHIBA were the reason I went to this show. I saw (and reviewed them here) in Toronto a few months back with Nous Etions. This was their final date of a 3-day stint with QUIET LAKES in Montreal, London and Hamilton. They play a very engaging mix of post-rock, post-hardcore and ambient electronics (as they do have 2 keyboards and visual accompaniments) and I would liken them to At The Drive In, The Mars Volta, Radiohead, Elliot, Milanku and Isis. Included in show link is ATSUKO CHIBA's full set spanning over 30 minutes. The sound is great and the video is really good because they turned the lights on! The band was also ridiculously nice and I pretty much chilled with them during most of the show. Strong recommended if they play near you!!! Also, if you like the set grab their 'Jinn' album which I grabbed 10 copies for the ZBR distro, linked here.

QUIET LAKES closed out the night with a set that was head and shoulders above the last one I saw. They have since acquired a proficient drummer (as opposed to a drum machine) and they played some new material that maintains the atmosphere of Mono and Angel Eyes but also brings in the crunchy, massive riffs that Pelican is known for. Truly a beautiful and crushing band. The new material impressed me so much that I asked the band to play the following weekend with Life In Vacuum, Congratulations, Bambara and Dinosaur Sex Change. They told me they'd play thrashier/heavier material so I am fucking stoked! I have embedded the band's encore song which was actually just a partial improv of a new song they are working on and will play this upcoming weekend. Check out the show on June 22nd in Hamilton here.

APOLLO 18 were the first Korean band to really catch and hold my attention. It's my job to teach South Koreans every day, so I know a fair amount about the mainstream scene there - and it's pretty goddamn bleak. Manufactured pop "artists" run amok with elementary school lyrics, plastic surgery and some pretty weak dance moves, which was one of the primary reasons that the band APOLLO 18 struck a chord with me while I spent 2.5 years in South Korea.

I happened to go to a cd release show for the band because a mister Shawn Despres wrote about the band in a publication, which drew my wife's attention and she proceeded to tell me. I really didn't expect much, but once the guitarist and bassist started screaming back and forth I almost went ballistic.

The band's elusive 'Demo' (which I'll insert as a download soon) includes some weaker tracks vocally, but "Discharge" is a goddamned instrumental masterpiece that truly basks in Envy territory. The driving, heavy yet melodic song with sprawling guitars and textbook transitions could be placed on any of Envy's records during the late 90s to mid-2000s-era and clocks in at just over 6 minutes.

'The Blue Album' is APOLLO 18's most consistent effort and includes 4 of the band's best songs. "High Stepper" is a sassy/screaming romp with some squealing guitar riffs before the chorus kicks in and the dual screaming takes hold with "I hope you fucking burn, burn!". The next amazing track is "Iridescent Clouds" which has a very ambient and shoegazey feel to it when the distorted and screamy sludge/grunge isn't at the forefront. "Manic Depressive" is pretty close to being an instrumental-only song, but dips into some screamed vocals over top a pretty basic shoegaze/post-hardcore/screamo sound. All of these pale in comparison (well...not really) to the amazing "Trampoline", with it's stuttering/screamed vocals, palm-muting and flamboyant chorus which sounds like a cross between Rye Coalition, Every Time I Die and Clouds.

'The Red Album' is mediocre but contains "End" and "Discharge" (again), which are the closest things to an Envy song that I've ever heard, and I assume quite a few people probably thought the songs on the OMSB mix were Envy. "End" even includes vocals that sound like the Japanese all-stars.

'The Violet Album' doesn't really have any tracks that I dig all that much and is mostly instrumental/atmospherics. A lot of people I know are really into that stuff as well as aggressive music so a fair amount of listeners will probably like it.

'The Black Album' is a great EP. "Corpse Flower" is the strongest track that the band has ever recorded, and as an EP it flows really well as all 4 songs are better than anything from 'The Violet Album'. The EP basically covers the different styles that the band was perfecting over their previous albums. Going back to "Corpse Flower" briefly, the 3:20 song sounds like spacey and hyperactive Sacrifice Poles mixed with the back and forth screaming of bands such as Ice Hockey and Birthday Boyz, although I'm hard pressed to think of accurate comparisons.

As I have steady contact with Koreans, I decided to ask the band if they'd like to answer some interview questions to which they happily obliged. Linked below is the interview in full, as well as all of the old APOLLO 18 videos I was able to scrounge together from the 2 concerts I attended.

OSKER

Years Active: 1998-2002
Song: "The Body"
Album: "Idle Will Kill"
Year: 2001
Label(s): Epitaph / Bankshot Records
This post's artist is from the May 2014 Mix. This is track #7.
You can download the May 2014 Mix#6 right here or get the new July Mix#7 here.
For fans of: Propagandhi, Lagwagon, The Get Up Kids... aka Punk.

I heard OSKER opened for Nofx back in the day and opened the set saying something along the lines of, "Does no one else notice that Nofx hasn't put out a good record in over a decade? 'The Decline' was pretty good I guess, but...it was an EP". I believe the band was forced to apologize or some shit. Then I witnessed them open for Guttermouth a year or so later to huge containers of orange juice being tossed on the stage (still full of oj!) to which the band yelled, "You put stop that moronic shit or you won't get to see your precious Guttermouth." Stories aside, OSKER was an important band in my past that helped prove gritty and snotty bands can change their style in as little as a year, and develop into a completely separate entity.

Also, the band used to post website updates that had me in stitches and if my memory serves me correctly, they had a 3rd album in the works titled 'Thriller', but I'm not sure if that was a joke or not.

"I Cannot" is a great song because of the chorus, which has a catch factor of...good. This is followed by the extremely fast-paced "Useless" which boats some pissed off lyrics "If I'm the asshole why do you still call me?This stupid fucking chase serves only to consume energy," with a great bass riff. "Dying" shows the driving energy behind Dave's basslines (which are amazing) and are the focal point in this song until the vocals in the chorus kick in and easily make this one of the standout tracks on the album. That being said, "13" is without a doubt the best song on 'Treatment 5' and gives the listener a taste of what's to come on their sophomore effort. There are still some pretty basic guitar riffs, but the attention paid to making those riffs work within a more mature song structure are more than apparent. "Radio" is another song that is much better on the cohesiveness and lyrical side of things. On the opposite end of the spectrum are songs like "Fuck Me" and "Shitface" which have some pretty basic/teenage angsty lyrics.

If he was writing stuff like this at 17-18, it was no wonder the 'Idle Will Kill' album only 3 years later was so introspective and raw at the same time. "Patience" sets the stage. From what I remember teenagers smashed their new OSKER cds upon hearing such sweet melodies coming from Devon, who was such a goddamn rapscallion on the band's debut. The acoustic opener is followed by one of best and catchiest songs on the album, "Strangled". This is like Green Day without the cheese factor of some of their material, and with with more youth, anger as well as talent. Remember, this was written when the band was 19 or so.

Although "Animal" starts out really light, the tail-end of the song has the band's hardest section where Devon ends up downright screaming. Definitely another highlight. Speaking of highlights, "Motionless" (their 'single'), "The Body" (with its dreamy, distant and distorted vocals that lead into a great rock riff that then meets back up with a chorus you'll be singing for days), "Kinetic" (the band's building grunge/punk rock ballad that should be heralded as one of the most accessible, and I must say best songs, that Epitaph has ever released) as well as "Disconnect, Disconnect" (another lengthy opus for a band that only an album ago wrote 2-minute punk blasts about shitheads, assholes and traitors.

If you thought OSKER was all pissed-off and rambunctious teenage punk rock, you'd be half right. I would recommend that everyone checks out 'Idle Will Kill', which was a defining album for me, as well as for the band. Unfortunately the amazing songwriting was drowned out by close-minded punks with a monogenre brain who were willing to settle for no less than a 'Treatment 5' replica.

The band was even in that movie with Kirsten Dunst, playing in a backyard party. Another note was that their original drummer died when he was 18 so 'Idle Will Kill' ended up having numerous drummers and a lack of a proper replacement led the bassist Dave to leave the band, although he later joined Devon in the acoustic rock band Fingers Cut Megamachine.
