*** VIDEONAUHAT + CLAIRE VOYANCÉ double song premiere ***

VIDEONAUHAT + CLAIRE VOYANCÉ
exclusive double-song premiere

For fans ofAlasVia Fondo and Raein

releases in full December 20th, 2024

Suspected Of Arson Records has a new compilation releasing this Friday on cassette full of Finnish screamo and by golly it's fucking fantastic. I had the pleasure of listening to all 16 jams and was blown away by the obvious strength of the country's scene. I won't ruin some of the surprises be sure to check out the first double premiere featuring new tracks by Alas and Suite Green here. Before we get to the Videonauhat and Claire Voyancé premieres here's a few words about the compilation from Chris (who also plays in Letterbombs and Piot:

"I’ve been the organizing everything from the start, but I believe it was Eetu (Letterbombs vocalist) who realized that there were enough Finnish screamo bands for a comp. But the idea came from just realizing that Finland had a ton of bands. So yeah, Eetu suggested the comp and someone else mentioned a fest and then people got to work."

(2024) VIDEONAUHAT "Nangijala" (from 'Finnskramz' compilation)

Featuring ex-members of Polemarch, this is the second track on the comp and it blew me away. I hadn't heard of this band but good lord am I following now. The section at 40 seconds is phenomenal, incorporating whirling riffs, lotsa speed, and great screaming. The rest is like Daitro on speed. Love it.

(2024) CLAIRE VOYANCÉ "A Thousand Year Voyage Guided By Compassion" (from 'Finnskramz' compilation)

This band's most recent EP made my ears perk up and then some, so I was stoked when I got to track 10 I was already salivating. Their jam begins more atmospheric and dark, but soon the fog clears and come 45 seconds let's the light shine through the clouds, with some cool guitar effects at 1:35. This band continues their upward trajectory at a staggering angle.

Holy shit, SHOGANAI seems to have come outta nowhere. Perhaps it has something to do with screamo poppin' the fuck off all over the world (but especially in the US, it seems) or maybe the band lay dormant and this debut EP is their hello. In the end it is of no consequence for this made my brain mush. It's complex, it's beautiful, it's cathartic, and hot damn those vocals fuckin' rock. 'Shoganai' cracked my top 5 EPs of 2024 within a few listens and remains a daily routine for me.

The self-titled EP houses five tracks of all-killer-no-filler jams (although I must admit I fuck hardest with the final three songs), perhaps bringing Nuvolascura (but slightly less techy), Roman Candle, and Heavenly Blue to mind. The searing vocals appear consistently but really hook on tracks "Carving" and "How I Know You're Gone", while the instrumental highlights occur on "Names and Dates in Concrete" (yummy bowl of noodles) and "Carving" again (reminds me of Crowning's unique style in the first half and a bit o' Capsule in the second). But holy smokes does "Paradise" go the hardest, taking my head clean off at the 30-second mark.

The ability of the band to make their first five songs this slay this much speaks volumes of the caliber of the members, and any subsequent material will be salivated over by myself and likely lots of others, cuz this is ridiculously good.

*** PODCAST #171 Coup D'état ***

On the eve of Victoria's three-piece COUP D'ÉTAT's debut release 'What Happens After the Epilogue...' on Tomb Tree and Yetzer Hara Records, I bring you this podcast. I've been watching the band closely since playing with them back in July (post w/videos linked here) and was stoked to find out that there was an incredible local screamo band. Their release show is December 13th, 2024 at Influence Board Shop which I will also be playing, and I'll have tapes and distro items. Back to the podcast though, Raine, Liliana, and Freyja made the hour-plus drive to hang with me in Ladysmith and discuss a myriad of topics including: the good Bad Religion albums, Propagandhi as a religion, drummin' at 3 years old, comedy grindcore is a genre, school of rock...the school, gettin' Sleemed, Screamo Skramz, good taste in powerviolence, the best Converge record, pulling from sass, The Sawtooth Grin worship, emo grind, gettin' gayer, compressing Alexisonfire, tongue placement & the screaming vortex, best records of 2024, communal nachos, etc. Bands played in this podcast: Athousandangelsandseven, Lazer Dim 700, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Xiao. Listen to podcast #171 which is available to stream and/or download for free via this link.
