...and updates

Holy moly I am done my second schooling. I am officially a certified English As A Second Language teacher. Happy days. So, based on this, next month I will open an online Facebook community for heavy music lovers with zero tolerance for asshats and douchebags. I will moderate it but I'm hoping it will be an interactive hub for sharing bands, tours, stories, etc. that people from any culture, country or background can feel at home in and be simultaneously excited about. It will be launched at the beginning of 2017 and will be linked in the next blog update.

Speaking of January 1st, on the first day of 2017 the almighty Zampler series will hit you right in your goddamned head yet again with installment #8. Zampler #7 - MI Does the Dyin', Fleet Just Does the Flyin' is linked here and is also a free download.

Before we move on to 2017 perhaps we should sign off on 2016 first. There is voting at Form Und Leere for top picks, releases and crushes of 2016 regarding punk, hardcore, screamo and metal. I would highly recommend taking a gander and a few minutes out of your busy schedule to vote for your favourite bands and releases of the year. Go here to vote and check back again in January on Form Und Leere for the results, which I will repost here cuz that blog rules.

As always, on or around the 1st of every month, I will be posting a ZIP file with songs for the upcoming month with ALL specifics deleted from the tags, so unless you already know the band, there is NO information regarding each track.

During the following month, I will post reviews for those bands and link the tracks to the review so you can associate the two together. This way you can listen to a new song/band and have little-to-no bias. Below, I have re-posted the December mp3 mix that is used for this month's reviews.

The new OMSB mp3 Mix #1, including:
*-* my post-high school metalcore band
*-* a new band that sounds like Loftus
*-* arguably the earliest and most influential screamo band of all time
*-* a relatively unknown screamo band circa 2005 with a strong leaning towards Mara'akate and Usurp Synapse
*-* Toronto twin post-hardcore

Any bands/labels that are interested in having their stuff reviewed, please email zegemabeachrecords@gmail.com: with "Open Mind Saturated Brain" as the subject. Please keep in mind that I don't review everything, just what jives with the blog. I will, however, listen to everything you send me. I would recommend emailing with an idea for a song/album premiere 2 months prior to that song/album release date for a much stronger chance at being reviewed on this blog. Bands that have already had their discography reviewed can also submit new albums for review if they include song/album premieres.

In early-mid 2015 I was contacted by a Canadian screamy emo band rooted in Edmonton, Alberta by the name of I HATE SEX about helping with their debut LP 'Circle Thinking'. I liked it, but wasn't blown away. Fast forward to a couple of months back and I was asked to premiere their '3-way split' with Black Knight Satellite and Algae Blooms (linked here) and after jamming the I HATE SEX track quite a few times I revisited the LP. My revelation was quick and simple - I HATE SEX is awesome. I then purchased the remaining material (a split with Low Level and two demo songs) and dropped the band on last month's mix.

I HATE SEX is a very interesting concoction of playful instrumentals that are never heavy, which balance the jarring and the bouncy as well as the jangly and the melodic, all with a driving, nervous foundation of screamy very well written vocals. There are also some excellent backup vocals that are very reminiscent of La Dispute, which are most notable in "One By Metallica" and also really carry the final half of the extremely chill "This Floating World".  "I Fucking Hate Sports" has a mad 80s vibe with those guitars and "Old New Girlfriend" begins like The Reptilian. "One By Metallica" is dancey as fuck from the get-go and I'd probably go ballistic to this tune live. "You + Me = Slipknot" is a dreamy trip that mixes passionate screams, prodigious bass and guitars from deep space into one of the best tracks on the record. "San Francisco" is another excellent song with a guitar tone that will seep into your unconsciousness which you should definitely check out, as I've embedded a live video of I HATE SEX ripping it up in Japan in this paragraph.

I asked vocalist Nicole if she would like to say a few words about the tour...so she did:

"There aren't enough words for our Japan Tour.  Everything about it was more than we expected. The people we met all through the country were amazing, everyone was so kind and hospitable. We toured with the Japanese band Ilill and Swedish band Shirokuma and their songs are still stuck in our heads. We fit 9 people in a 6 person cargo van, in +36 degree. We played 9 shows, in 7 different cities and towns. We ate mostly rice balls and curry - like i said there just isn't enough words to describe how fantastic this tour was, I think you just have to live it.

Since we returned from tour, we have been working hard at writing our new LP as well as putting out strong feelers for an EU tour this spring. The work never stops"

Let's be real here. I shouldn't be writing this review. Sure, I understand that DRIVE LIKE JEHU was a seminal punk/hardcore/emo band. Yes, I thoroughly enjoy DRIVE LIKE JEHU's musical output. Buuuuut, I didn't even hear DRIVE LIKE JEHU until about 2008 and even now I feel very uneducated regarding the band, their history as well as their releases. Therefore, this will be very bare bones and generally uninformative but I'll give you the quick Daverview (that's a Dave Overview, for those of you who don't love to mash words together).

Starting in way back in 1990, DRIVE LIKE JEHU released their demo cd that same year, housing four songs of spastic, screamy rock not unlike Sleepytime Trio, Four Hundred Years and The Expoder, all of which showed up on their 1991 debut full length LP 'Drive Like Jehu'. This first LP is amazing considering it is from way back in the early 90s. The self titled still holds up real well, but it's the final 1994 record 'Yank Crime' that is my personal favourite and most noteworthy release by the band. Originally put out on Interscope, this album was insanely influential as it perfectly mixed punk, alternative/indie rock, post-hardcore, grunge and mathy emo. A few years later the record was rereleased under the band's record label Shwami Records and tacked on the 1992 releases of the 7" with the songs "Bullet Train to Vegas" and "Hand Over Fist" as well as the compilation track called "Sinews". The 7" is pretty damn awesome, as it opens with "Bullet Train to Vegas", possibly the heaviest DRIVE LIKE JEHU song. Although there is yellin' that borders on screaming, the band generally opts for a shouted/yelled approach. The guitars are pretty great, using a mathy and dueling style that is both melodic and jarring simultaneously. DRIVE LIKE JEHU songs are on the longer side, generally, with most songs clocking in at four to six minutes. I think a pretty decent comparison would be Frodus with a heavy injection of emo. A last note of worthiness is that drummer Mark Trombino went on to produce massive bands such as Blink 182, Mineral and Jimmy Eat World, to name a few.
