Never heard THE GREAT REDNECK HOPE before? These guys will fucking destroy you. Fast, chaotic, screamy as all hell, weird, funny, crazy and talented are all pretty apt descriptions. The band's releases were all, for the most part, grindy/powerviolence/metallic-screamo with some obvious melodies sped up three to four times just to fuck with coupled with mind-reeling song titles and insanely short songs lengths.

Starting with THE GREAT REDNECK HOPE's demo 7" 'Why Humans Think Computers Cant'...this shit was hard to find. I scoured ebay for a good two to three years before finally grabbing it for $15 or something. It's raw and slower, with many a nod to Botch's early 'The John Birch Conspiracy Theory'-era work and the first Ed Gein release, aka mathy hardcore with scathing vocals. Of all the band's work this is my least favourite. My computer has, for some unexplained reason, deleted the first of the four tracks on my hard drive, so I've only posted tracks 2-4. If anyone else has this please upload it for all to enjoy!

This was followed by a very influential and important album, the ''Splosion' cd/10" picture disc that only has one song that really resonates with me. That song is "They Say the People Elect the Government They Deserve, but I Don't Remember Knife-Raping Any Retarded Nuns" and comes the closest to fine-tuning the band's sound. The album is decent, but after hearing 'Behold The Fuck Thunder' this is kind of like reading a kids book when you are older. I guess in comparison it sounds loose, awkward at times and generally less inventive.

'Behold The Fuck Thunder' is THE GREAT REDNECK HOPE's masterpiece. Look no further than the absolutely exceptional and essential "Cheeseburger Karma 2004 - A Jam Odyssey" which hits on every ridiculous aspect that the band has to offer. In less than one minute, you've got aggressive/heavy finger-tapping goodness, murder guitars, breakdowns, some Southern flare, mathy time changes and over-the-top puke/screaming. You've also the insane breakdown in "Girl, are You Pregnant...It's not My Fault, You Seduced Me" at the 30-second mark which is the fastest breakdown I've ever heard. "Let's Fall in Love over AIM so we can Fuck when we meet at Cornerstone" is the first great track with even more of that southern-tinged An Albatross-meets-metal from the 11-song album which could probably be listed as an EP or an LP, with the entire thing running less than 11 minutes! That's pretty short, but it's to be expected when you've got stuff like "My Other Car is a Centaur", which is a 17-second romp with ridiculous vocals/lyrics that read, "Her name was Lola, she was a dancer." followed by a guy speaking into a mic, "Thank you very much, You really are a sophisticated audience." Obviously these guys saw their lyrics, band name and recordings as a bit of a joke and were able to poke fun at themselves. I also heard from one of the nicest people that I know that they were jerks...so maybe they took it a bit too far. I don't know.

Moving on to the 'Bleeding Kansas split' 7" which was hugely under-appreciated (and I still have one is stock here!). This was my first introduction to the band and it was so good that I quickly bought everything I could get my hands on, including the sweet-ass whale skeleton/kids shirt that I have pictured above. Tracks like "Come On, Jesus, Let's Fucking Party" and "Never Mind the Amputees, Let's Have Sex" are classic THE GREAT REDNECK HOPE and include some of the band's heaviest and screamiest work. I also really love the eerie, slow part in the middle of "Come On, Jesus, Let's Fucking Party".

I've recently been shown a live video from the band in 2002 playing "You're Not A Man Until You've Been With One" which apparently from some lost, obscure and, according to the video, out of print demo 3"cd. You can watch the video here or at the bottom of the youtube embeds. If you know anyone who's got this bad boy, please post it in the comments section!

There's a decent history about the band linked here. Grab the discography including the 7" demo (minus the first track which was erased from my computer, somehow) here.

***CONGRATULATIONS release show w/NOUS ÉTIONS & TERRY GREEN***

On Wednesday November 26th CONGRATULATIONS, Sean and I were finally able to bring their first recordings to the world. I put on a release show for the band in Hamilton, Ontario with fellow Zegema Beach swimmers NOUS ÉTIONS (who released their 12" debut LP just over a month back, listen here and purchase here), my boys in TERRY GREEN and the locals JIMMY AND THE JERKS. Honestly, this was a fucking great show. Be sure to watch all the videos by clicking here.
****************************************************

Closing the night, obviously, was CONGRATULATIONS. Here they are performing my favourite song which is titled "Gospel" because I always told the band it sounded like the band Gospel - at least I think that's the reason. You can hear me losing my shirt before the song starts because they played their self-titled cassette (listen here, purchase here) straight through and ended with the song that will appear on The Rabbit Theory split 7" set to come out next year. Watch their entire set here.
****************************************************

NOUS ÉTIONS graced us a with a new, unreleased song which is amazing and epic as all hell (the end sounds like it should be the new Canadian anthem!). You can view it linked in the band's (near) full set here. The band also had Guillaume from The Expectorated Sequence on drums and he was fantastic. I think I have a new favourite song by the band from their 12" they just released (on Zegema Beach Records, Ancient Injury Records, Don't Live Like Me Records, Désordre Ordonné and Through Love Records) because the first half is good and all, but the last half is fucking unreal. Check "Les Algorithmes Du Malheur" out below! Listen to and grab the new 12" here.
****************************************************

TERRY GREEN, as per usual, put on a great show and played what I assumed to be the fan favourites. I spoke with the band and it sounds like they will be releasing a tape in the near future which Funeral Sounds and perhaps Zegema Beach Records - although I don't know for certain! Check out their new, untitled track that would appear on said release below. I've also got some copies of the band's short-run of self-released demo tapes here.

JIMMY AND THE JERKS started the night off in their own, sassy way. Punk rock to the fucking core, my friends. Check out their bandcamp page here.

For fans of: Tentacles, Among Light, Welcome The Plague Year, La Luna, Guidelines, мища, Yusuke, Deadseraphim, The Spirit Of Versailles, The Truth About Dreaming, Crestfallen, Hospital, Gas Up Yr Hearse! and Deers! aka PROPER SCREAMO.

AMYGDALA caught my attention first when Jose (guitar) posted about his new band online and cited Welcome The Plague Year as an influence - that's all I need to spark my interest. After checking out the demo track I was excited for their initial release. Fast forward to now and I've jammed the six songs from 'The Horror of Never Being Able to Forget' am impressed, but I'm much more intrigued by what the band will do next.

Let's quickly talk about what they sound like. Shrieky. Fucking shrieky. Two drummers. Grindy. Chaotic. Sludgy. Dark. Each song varies between about one and three-something minutes. "One Joy will Scatter a Hundred Sorrows" lets the listener know that this won't be a pretty ride. It's abrasive, acidic as well as unrelenting and at 2:05 the heavy breakdown kicks in just to remind us that the band, although new, can write some pretty big stuff. "Forever Love" is my personal favourite that boasts the best thing the band has written, aka the section from 1:21 to 2:10 with an echoing instrumental section and vocals that are placed with jigsaw accuracy and laced with the audio equivalent of venomous tendrils. Another standout track is the 1:39 "Punk has No Room for Misogynists", which yet again hits the mark at 1:08 after a nice lead in and, much like "Forever Love" which slows it down with an epic outro not far from Swan Of Tuonela and Angel Eyes territory. I'm also a big fan of "Neurodegeneration". As far as I know the band's lyrics are inspired by psychology, as the vocalist is studying such and "amygdala", in case you were wondering, is the integrative center for emotions/motivation in the brain.

There is one thing I hope gets cleaned up for AMYGDALA's sophomore release is the vocal volume. I like shrieky vocals but they kinda blare out of the speakers and permeate through the song in a way that detracts from the instrumentals. It's kinda like Tentacles' 'Isolation is a Gift' release, which I love (especially the drumming) but the cymbals are so loud that they can drown out the other amazing stuff that is going on. Complains aside, great debut. I believe this demo is being issued as a 7" vinyl on React With Protest, Off Cloud Nine and Trends Die Records. The band has also been touring a bunch so catch them when they hit your area by checking their facebook page.
