I first met the absolutely lovely Tom McCone when I posted in a facebook forum in Dunedin, New Zealand asking if anyone was interested in starting a screamo band. He replied, we jammed, we hung, we even did a podcast (linked here). Less than a week before I left Dunedin I was able to catch his other band RAINING's 'demo ii' release party on December 8th, 2017 with Anarchy Drive and Maryland. The three piece's lo-fi but intoxicating, beautiful and cathartic midwestern emo with its occasional angry, screamy outburst was a welcome change to the breakdown laden metalcore/emo-violence that I have inadvertently immersed myself in. Upon a quick and rather obvious observation, the band released their first 'demo' almost two years prior, so here's a review of both demos and their live show.

Their first recording, 'demo', is titled "unseen" and is broken into two parts, both recorded in 2015 but not released until January 2016. "unseen, part i" is a bouncy, raw emo song recorded lo-fi (on an iphone, actually) with lots of wandering, backdrop music that fades in and out. The vocals are warbled, spoken, shouted and yelled. "unseen, part ii" is over seven minutes, and creates a very somber atmosphere from the get-go, and could be likened to an impromtu jam on the porch of a house in the country during dusk. Just before 1:30 this is shattered as the volume increases, drums quicken and shouting is added to the mix, which soon subsides and melts into more expansive rock music for its remaining 7:07 length.

There are certainly parts of their debut that I like, but 'demo ii' is much more fleshed out and cohesive with engaging song structures, expansion of their soft and hard extremes as well as more and better screaming. Opener "gullies" is a 1:11 ambient intro and leads nicely into the twinkly and gestating "land/minds". After a beautiful beginning it gets huge right before the first minute hits and rides out swelling instrumentals until 1:36 when mathy noodles take center-stage. The first vocals don't escape Tom's lungs until after three minutes when the song reaches its climax and are sparse, but the desperate screams used in moderation here help accentuate the song's peak. "AAH9" is next, focusing on more aggression with its crashing, violent and screamy first minute and a half, eerie lullaby midsection and blown-out, killer ending. RAINING takes a bit of a break with "salt fog", as it is just a minute of dreamy, textured and distant emo-rock. "panic veldt" gets things back on track with distant, pathetic, hazy singing that explodes in a fury halfway through like a drunken, bedroom tantrum.
Closer "spreading swamp" clocks in at 4:20 and spends the majority of its time noodling around the backyard in both the emo and screamo realms or providing lush texturing, perhaps being the most noticeable example of the band having an identity crisis - but it works.

I mean, hey, if you're not weird then you're boring.

As always, on or around the 1st of every month, I will be posting a ZIP file with songs for the upcoming month with ALL specifics deleted from the tags, so unless you already know the band, there is NO information regarding each track.

During the following month, I will post reviews for those bands and link the tracks to the review so you can associate the two together. This way you can listen to a new song/band and have little-to-no bias. Below, I have re-posted the February mp3 mix that is used for this month's reviews.

The new OMSB mp3 Mix #3 has 10 tracks of mostly screamy, volatile hardcore. Some examples include:
*-* a previously unreleased song (track #1!!!)
*-* two unreal Quebec bands, one active and one dead
*-* a Tom Schlatter project
*-* something fans of Every Time I Die and Von Wolfe will dig
*-* hot screamo/emo-violence straight outta Singapore

Any bands/labels that are interested in having their stuff reviewed, please email zegemabeachrecords@gmail.com: with "Open Mind Saturated Brain" as the subject. Please keep in mind that I don't review everything, just what jives with the blog. I will, however, listen to everything you send me. I would recommend emailing with an idea for a song/album premiere 2 months prior to that song/album release date for a much stronger chance at being reviewed on this blog. Bands that have already had their discography reviewed can also submit new albums for review if they include song/album premieres.

Review by TOM SCHLATTER:
It had to be around 2002 or so that I heard someone mention DAWN TREADER to me. The stories went that there was this band from Baltimore that played melodic screamo with quiet piano interludes. It had to be only a matter of time until I ran into them, or perhaps intentionally engineered my running into them. I got my hands on the cd at some point and was blown away by the epic nature of the song writing, the versatility of the vocals and the overall impressive nature of the musicianship. "Forces of Nature" was the song that stuck with me, even after a first listen, the piano line and brilliant crescendo just wouldn't leave my head.

Around 2003 I caught up with them on tour right when Lizzy Cowan had joined the band on cello. The use of cello fit right into the mix in a way that I wouldn't have predicted. Upon the intense chromatic guitar scales, frantic drumming and beautiful piano, the strings found their home nicely. "Message in a Bottle" was the first song that I heard them show off the new lineup and dynamic. At over 6 minutes, the song takes their epic song writing style to another level. In addition to the self titled cd they ended up releasing a 'split LP with D'Amore' and a 'split 7" with Fall on Deaf Years'.

The band toured pretty relentlessly in the early part of the 00's, but after 2006 or so the band seemed to slow down. I later heard that they had grown the band to 9 members, which I think entailed more orchestral strings, a third guitar player, a second piano, among other instruments. There's a video (linked here) documenting some of the expanded musicianship, but don't watch it if you get motion sickness easily. A couple years after calling it quits the band presented a release appropriately called 'Post Mortem'. I've never seen a physical copy, but you can track down the songs in the digital world if you look hard enough. It's worth the search.
