FUNERAL DINER has so many fucking songs, and so many that are amazing that I'm not going to try. This band was ridiculously influential for my "screamo" love, as I was first introduced by my random Interpunk purchases back in the early 2000s. The 'Dead City' split and 'Difference of Potential' LP were what I thought "screamo" was. They dropped 'The Underdark' in 2005 and people started to lose their shit. Rightfully so. But I've always gotta go back to those 4 perfect songs on the 'Dead City' split 12". My god. "City of Webs" especially. The split with 'Welcome the Plague Year' and 'Raein' were also incredible. Plus they were pretty much solely responsible for getting me into amazing bands due to their splits, such as Zann and Evylock.
FUNERAL DINER played near-flawless screamy hardcore with both pretty bits as well as heavy jams, and generally combined them seamlessly. Instrumentally this band was extremely talented and very proficient with their instruments, especially the drummer from the seminal mid-90s band Portraits Of Past. The band hit their stride in 2002 when vocalist Seth Robert Baab was recruited for the band and they really started crafting some truly original work. The older material can be likened to many older screamo bands, but once Seth joined, the FUNERAL DINER sound was truly honed. The closest vocalist I think he sounds like is Geoff Rickley from Thursday when he used to lose his shit and scream, although even that comparison seems a little off. I should also mention that "Yeah, You Remember That" is another flawless, passionate and screamy hardcore song which is one of my personal favourites by the band. The nearly unknown "Two More" is another great song that begins with FUNERAL DINER's cleanest vocals they've ever released. Also be sure to check out "For The Beasts" which has a fucking ridiculous bassline.
Don't pass this up. Gotta be 1 of the 5 most influential American and perhaps global screamy hardcore bands. Included for download is what I believe to be the entire discography. All the vinyl-only releases are from my personal transfer a long time ago when I didn't really know what I was doing, but used a proper mixer so they turned out they way they did. Enjoy the hell outta this band today.
P.S. 'The Doors Open' cd is for sale here.
