SINCE BY MAN was a band to be reckoned with a decade ago. Think Refused and (old) Vaux meets Orchid and the heavier parts of The Bled with some sick and well-placed dual vocals. In a vain attempt to summarize the band, I'd say it sounds like well-restrained chaos that is still pretty chaotic, but SINCE BY MAN has much more melody than most chaotic bands who play this style and are more chaotic than the melodic bands who try to reach this genre from the other end of the spectrum. Well that doesn't read very well. How's about I just blab on and on about my favourite tracks? Cool.

WE SING THE BODY ELECTRIC (2003)

"Push The Panic" is one the band's fastest and hardest numbers. Less than 20 seconds you have dual vocalists screaming their faces off before comfortably transitioning to a poppier chorus, which SINCE BY MAN was able to do quite well. Don't expect poppy like pop-punk or anything, it's still heavy but has a bit of a sassy Blood Brothers thing going on. The last 30 seconds brings the band back to the really heavy stuff, ending with "This is how you die. This is how you fucking die!" aka one of the best parts in any SINCE BY MAN song. The embedded track for this is actually an official music video and it's sick.

"Watch The Fall" a much slower and epic ordeal than the previous 6 songs on the album. The first 1/3 of the song is a slow but deliberate build that will have you slowly bobbing your head waiting for the fall, which jumps on the listener at the 1:50-mark. This shows the brooding nature of the band, and is a great track that ends with some more clean vocals, which are much more prominent on the band's first release...this one.

"It's Just That Kinda Night" is another fast and pulverizing anthem with a palm-muted breakdown that reminds me of old The Bled. It's a really good song but in hindsight this is kind of like a weaker version of "Push The Panic", which still makes it awesome.

"The Enemy" closes 'We Sing The Body Electric' and is definitely one of the band's longer and most epic songs. The simple back-and-forth guitar riff leads out of the gate with the vocalist's patented blood-curdling screams, meanders for a short time with a lulling bass riff that explodes at the 1:40-mark. For the final 2 minutes the band brings in some chugging riffs and more call-and-response screaming that is the cornerstone to any song that I love. This is probably the most complete and kick-ass song on the album.

A Love Hate Relationship (2004)

"Swan Killer" is one of the fastest and most chaotic songs the band ever wrote. A short but explosive romp through the aggressive repertoire of SINCE BY MAN, minus chug breakdowns which they use on occasion. If you can handle the heaviness/screaming of this song you can do anything from their catalogue.

"Who Would Be Without My Middle Finger" is a great song and probably the most straightforward rock/post-hardcore track that SINCE BY MAN did with vocal melodies (not singing, but more in the presentation and structure of the vocals) and a catchy guitar riff throughout. The middle and end of the song share a great little section "Right now, tongue tied..." that could have been more present in the rest of the song, as it is the best part.

Pictures From The Hotel Apocalyse (2006)

"Emergency And Me" - now don't get me wrong, I really like the first 2 SINCE BY MAN albums, but 'Pictures From The Hotel Apocalypse' is most definitely the band's crowning achievement and an absolute killer album. It becomes apparent from the line "emergency, emergency motherfucking emergency" is spat repeatedly in your face with such ferocity that you know you're in for a violent ride.

"Lactating Teens" follows as track 2 and is probably my favourite song on the album. This reminds me of "Push The Panic" but all subdued constituents have been passed over for full, thick and heavy screamy hardcore. Take me down.

"Young America" directly follows the "Lactating Teens" and is the standout track for lyrics, "Destruction is our mantra you know it makes things easy. We shake it till it breaks. Breation is a killer so let's leave in these splinters. We scream and we scream until we all spit blood. God as my copilot I think we're crashing. We dance because this is our freefall. Fuckable faces with their plastic fortunes, we kill and we thrill until we destroy them all. Breakdown has never tasted as sweet as this, licking the blood off tomorrow's bright red lips." Those are pretty amazing, as well as much deeper and intelligent than most of the crap that is passed off as writing these days. Oh, and the song fucking owns, perhaps as much as "Lactating Teens" and the phenomenal closer "Photographer Ex Post Facto".

"Match On Action" has got to be the single on this record. It's probably the only track to dabble in the more melodic and, dare I say, mainstream (like, The Bled mainstream, not real mainstream) currents of punk/hardcore/screamo/metal music. That being said, the chorus is still heavy and memorable while the guitars border on Hot Cross and Gaff sounding solo riffing. Good luck not singing/screaming "this - circumstantial evidence - is all I know," after hearing this bad boy.

"Quid Pro Quo Motherfucker" brings in the female vocals that are used sparingly on this album, showcasing her yell in a few spots. This is another wallop of a song, creating a whirlwind of chaos that violently ejects directly into your ear-holes.

"Photographer Ex Post Facto" is an amazing song for SINCE BY MAN to go out on. This is the behemoth of Pictures From The Hotel Apocalypse' and also includes some clean female singing to get the atmosphere set for the listener before dropping a nuke on your brain. This 6+ minute ordeal not only has prodigious riffs and transitions but also has massive-sounding vocals. They command attention and are so thick that they remind me of the those beautiful-yet-demonic pipes the screamer in Transistor Transistor used to belt out on a regular basis.
