JENNY PICCOLO existed for a few short years back in the late 1990s and were named after Joanie Cunningham's best friend on the TV show "Happy Days". I googled that shit cuz I didn't watch the show. They generally crammed as much as they could into songs that hovered around the 30-second mark. Their 52-track discography cd clocks in at less than 40 minutes and after the first song you have a pretty good idea of what's in store for the remaining 51. It's young, sloppy, loud and fast. The drums are pounded on non-stop at a frantic rate. The guitar varies between drawn-out, down-tuned riffs that act as breathers as well as breakdowns, and thrash/grind chaos. The bass is also turned up higher than most bands, which gives the whole things a very punk/hardcore feel to it. Plus there's yelling/screaming by at least 2 of the members which is reminiscent of numerous bands, but early Neil Perry and Hassan I Sabbah come to mind, with more of a crusty-punk feel. The whole thing comes together nicely. It's not pretty, but it's honest, engaging and fun as hell to listen to. If you want a place to start, start with the video below before reading my extensive interview with Chris, who also played in and discusses Yaphet Kotto, Makara and The Anasazi. The drummer bringing in the breakdown in "Forgotten" (at the 3:30-mark) was paramount for my introduction to 31G and Level-Plane Records, and still brings tears to my eyes. Holy shit, I'm surprised the camera didn't explode.
