Valik from YOTSUYA KAIDAN hit me up simultaneously with Tim from Dingleberry Records asking if I wanted to help with the band's debut 7". Considering I had no money at the time I said, "Only if I love the shit out of it." Well guess what? I loved the shit out of it.

The 7" opens with "High School Fights For The Ziggurat Falls" whose intro is just over 30 seconds of slow, ringing notes. This lead in works really well as the listener is left salivating, waiting and expecting something big - and you shalln't be disappointed. The song then shifts quickly into 90s US/Canadian screamo crossed with pummeling dark, European screamo and some of the newer Malaysian stuff. Think Orchid, June Paik and Virginia On Duty if slowed down just a tad and recorded in a much rawer live setting. Speaking of which, this was mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth of Orchid, Ampere and Ritual Mess fame.

"Feels Like Lucio Fontana's Canvas" begins nicely but just after 40 seconds in it shifts to a blistering hardcore/screamo sound much more prevalent in 90s Canadian screamo such as Drift and Union Of Uranus with some fantastic screaming and very engaging instrumentals that eventually meet up with 'Gatefold' era Orchid by the two-minute mark.

"Tasmanian Tigers" was the exclusive premiere single as I included it on the blog mix back on March 1st so that's certainly another reminder to grab the blog mixes when they come because I usually include at least one previously unreleased song nowadays. Anyhoos, this song is almost straight up Orchid worship that ends up sounding like The Ultimate Screamo Band and some of Caitlyn Bailey's heavier material. The chugging breakdowns consistently lead directly into early 2000s screamo guitar riffs and cycle through the two with fucking epic screaming and zero breaks. Probably the best song on the record but not by much.

The closer "Stormo & Goliad" is pretty damn epic. It starts out in relatively typical YOTSUYA KAIDAN fashion as it crashes around with deep and pulsating sounds and multiple screamers until 1:30 when it shifts into a slower transition in order to build on itself. As the music and yelling escalate it becomes quite apparent that shits gonna get real and definitely does as the song detonates at 2:32 which I can only imagine comes across prodigiously live.

So there you have it. This band may have been around for two years but this is their first recorded output and it's fucking stellar. Jam dem songs below and hear for yourself. If you like what you hear grab a copy from Zegema Beach Records here or pick it up from one of the fine labels listed in the "label" section above.
