Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta Canada, TODOS CAERAN released
a slew of material from 2010 to 2013. I was meh about the band until hearing their
unreal split 12” with Calgary’s Tel Fyr. Two of those four songs solidified me as a
fan, but this new attachment held only to the band’s newer material. Soon after
this split they released their final album ‘Town of Cats’ which was a good listen, but failed to stick in the
same manner as those phenomenal split songs. Speaking of those killer jams, “Man in the High Castle” is a spacey and screamy affair that
eventually leads to a Hot Cross-lite riff to close it out. “Valis” floats
around for the first half with a sound not screamy but not overly heavy, that
is to say it is soft enough to entice some dancing and movement. At 2:39 the
song slides into the ridiculous category with a repetitious and passionate concoction
of climbing instrumentals and the excellently delivered line of, “Fear not, it
is not our place to change. My friends fear not, it is too hard to change.”
The band’s contribution on the Orchid tribute ‘Epilogue of a Car Crash’ should also be
noted, as they tackled “Tigers” which is one of my favourite Orchid songs.
They do a decent job with a very similar rendition of the original but don’t
really add anything to it or change it in any major way. As for TODOS CAERÁN's early material, it sounds as if most of the 2011 splits and LP were recorded in 1 or 2 sessions as they are all good but don't hit that sweet spot that they nail later on.
In conclusion, check this band out. They're not the greatest but if you love the late 90s screamo mixed with some spacier elements this will be a welcome band to your collection.
