VALANDORA was a band my friend/girlfriend in University (Hi, Nara!) introduced me to. She was having a hard time finding bands I didn't know and shocked me with these fellas. I only found one release and am pretty sure they were a myspace/purevolume band that were scattered around random parts. Although the style has been done before and a hell of a lot since, but this particular sing/scream combo was really good. The singing vocalist has a very high Coheed/Chiodos thing going on, and although he breaks a bit I really dig it. The screamer is exceptional and helped pave the way for me liking screamo, with vocals like that. There are really only 2 songs that strike me as amazing and the rest are decent enough, with the demo being of poor quality both audibly and musically, at least compared to their final recordings.
"Cheeky Curve" is a fantastic opener and the band's best song. It busts out like Alexisonfire
with much higher and "punkier" clean singing. This climaxes after 1:15 when the screaming bursts forth and is reminiscent of old Recover and demo-era Boys Night Out, which I absolutely love. The lyrics with both the clean singing "never know / until it happens" and screaming "take my soul / it won't be missed".
"Nominal Animal" is quite repetitive and holy sheeeat does he hold those singing notes for a long fucking time, but its brooding groove should hook you and the dual vocal parts (sung and screamed) certainly don't hurt. After about a minute the song builds and almost lets go but subdues itself instead. After 2:30 "Nominal Animal" seems like its about to fade out, only to finally bring on some heavier, mathier instrumentals with both guys screaming. Nods to Fall Of Troy.
I checked on discogs.com and these guys weren't even listed, which is rare. I did a quick scan but other than their purevolume/lastfm sites I saw nothing posted about them. Twas a shame...past tense. Enjoy.
