I've been a massive Tentacles fan ever since listening to their song "Natul Tortuosa" from the 'Isolation is a Gift' release. As the band attempted to jump hurdles in order to stay together, some members needed room for an offshoot. Frank had recently left Tentacles as the second guitarist (although he later joined again) and started a new, two-piece screamo/emo-violence band heavily influenced by late 90s and early 2000s screamy hardcore such as Phoenix Bodies and Welcome The Plague Year. They only ended up recording three songs and I happen to have an unfinished fourth song that will likely never see the light of day.
I was lucky enough to nab the only video of the band at the Austin Blood Alliance Festival in January of 2015 during the shortest set ever which consisted of only two songs, although they were my two favourite "Inflict and Reflect" and "Onward From False Body". Both songs appear on the 2014 'Demo' along with another song called "itwillallendsoon" which are pretty lo-fi but come across with power, passion and extreme intensity. Imagine if Tentacles dropped the metal/doom sound and traded it for more grind/screamo kinda thang and you've got the right idea. Considering only two people managed to make this much noise is uncanny.
I'd like- no, I fucking must, discuss my two favourites by the two-piece:
"Inflict and Reflect" is the second song on the 'Demo' and I'd characterize it as an all-out assault on the eardrums. The drums are absolutely ridiculous and at 17 seconds the song slides into a screamo groove that is superseded by a very early Tentacles-esque breakdown at 37 seconds that rides out the remaining 1:29. Bloody hell. The closer and ultimate badass is "Onward From False Body" which, at 3:22, is one of the best songs I've heard in years. Seriously, and it's a fucking demo, people. The opening contains more unreal drumming that gets to breakneck speed at 31 seconds in and the apocalyptic screaming takes hold and shit goes ballistic. Just before the one-minute mark they, again, slide into an intoxicating post-hardcore build that eventually erupts into seething screams and subdued strumming before dissipating into nothingness. The video for this song in particular is mindblowing.
Speaking of that song that was never completed with vocals, Matt from AMONG LIGHT has told me that I can post it! So here's an exclusive track premiere for "006" (aka "untitled #4).
Near the end of the band's tenure there were discussions about recording an EP and doing a split 7". The project I do vocals for called мятеж had planned to do thta split 7" with AMONG LIGHT but that will not come to fruition, unfortunately. We can all be extremely thankful that the band decided to commit three songs to audio recording before calling it a day, because hot damn this is one of the best demos I've ever heard.
Frank from AMONG LIGHT's description for this post. Science bless that man. I love Matt and Frank to the max.
