THIS CITY CALLED EARTH is (I believe) a one man project from Virginia in the USA. The mathy, jazzy and improvisational style is excellent, especially considering that my favourite release by the band is their self titled debut from back in 2013. The dizzying array of guitar attacks that resemble Gifts From Enola, Maserati and early Russian Circles worship is mingled with The Mars Volta/Ahleuchatistas-esque quirky improv passages. The songs on every record generally adhere to this successful formula with a few exceptions. "Friendship & Macaroni are Best When Served Warm" has vocals which work quite well and are reminiscent of Gifts From Enola and float on top of the instrumentals not unlike Hum. Some tracks meander a little too much, such as "Sever the Limbs, Preheat the Oven (10,000 Farenheit)" with tangents that detract from the listening experience, in my opinion. They just seem too loose and have no gravity to them, they just kinda float around and don't go anywhere. That being said, this project is worth your time and will certainly entice fans of the aforementioned instru-metal bands.
