Review by JESSE MOWERY
THE MOCK HEROIC are one of the many great unknown bands I
discovered from 'The Emo Armageddon' comp (not to mention ones I discovered from
the 'Emo Apocalypse' and 'Emo Annihilation'). Their song ("At Your Disposal"), like the rest in the
series, is less than 30 seconds, but so much happens in that span of time that
it immediately piqued my interest. The first thing I found after that was their
album 'Dignified Exits', and it quickly became a daily listen. The guitar
playing is mind boggling, both players work with each other to create
atmospheres that are both fun and foreboding. The rhythm section is no slouch
either, with the bass filling out the lows so the guitars are free to soar,
while the drums flail along with guitars. My favorite tracks from it are
probably “Fairweather”,” Led Astray”, and “The Architect”, but it’s a great
listen as a whole album.
While I like the rest of their stuff, which includes a
self-titled 7” and a split with Utarid, Am I Dead Yet?, and A Fine Boat That
Coffin, it’s really only a glimpse at what they accomplish on 'Dignified
Exits'. The 7” is way more screamo-ish, at times reminding me of What Price
Wonderland, as in the middle of “Your Body Weight In Wrong Moves”. The split
has 2 songs that are lo-fi versions of songs on their 7” and full length, so
it’s not essential listening, but still cool, and the other bands on it rule.
