I can't remember how exactly I heard about TERRY GREEN. I must have seen them post in a facebook group or something because I was trying to start booking screamo shows in Hamilton, Ontario (about an hour outside of Toronto). I hit them up because there was only one screamo band in Hamilton (Sketchbooks, who broke up shortly after I met TERRY GREEN) to round out bills with out of town bands. Fast forward to almost four years later and I really feel like I know all four of these fellas quite well, as I've booked them for probably ten shows and chilled with them at other concerts so many times I've lost count. Adrian, Adam, Matt and Louis have been living and breathing this band for almost three years now and they are on the verge of releasing their debut LP in early 2017. I've heard the demos and also been told that mixing and mastering are the final steps and then this bad boy will be ready for your listening pleasure.
TERRY GREEN began in 2013 (although the exact date definitely escapes the band) and initially set out to make pop-punk but after one practice it was apparent that they weren't taking that direction. What the band did create in their first six months or so in existence were the five songs that appear on their demo tape titled 'Visiting Hours' in mid-2014. What does it sound like? Kinda like a mixture of Alexisonfire, Van Johnson and State Faults playing upbeat and mathy emo/post-hardcore. The EP opens with the very contradictory "Hi Hater" and its ambient intro of 1:58 and the remaining minute of screamy post-hardcore. "Bye Hater" is probably the strongest song the record as it begins with a very driving drum beat and guitar ascent. By 41 seconds the screaming meets up and the bass also becomes more prominent but that palm-muted/noodley jammy interlude that gets goin' at 57 seconds is the reason this song takes cake. "Rich A$ Fuck" was the band's first live "hit", if I may, as people took to screaming along to the latter half of the track. The intro as well as the entire first half sounds almost like college rock made hardcore, and I mean that in the best possible way. It's accessible, maybe that's more accurate. At 1:10 Matt's guitars get poppy and noodley simultaneously and are the transition to the slow, spoken word and aforementioned singalong part, "With that being said we're finally dead. When we all said, we'll finally meet again." that builds to screams and an outro by the three-minute mark. "Yard Sard" is a chill, dreamy yet powerful emo song with the first half being quite playful and quick while the second is atmospheric and very subdued. Closer "Yale Sale / / Another Sard" is a banger and was a favourite to play live for a couple of years, it seems. A wild first half gives way to an instrumental slow jam that eventually circles back and topples the listener at around three minutes. One of the runs of tapes also includes a demo version of "What the..." which I've linked right here.
Come 2015 the band asked if I would be interested in helping release their split tape EP with friends Huge Cosmic. After hearing both bands tracks I agreed, primarily because of "Instant Relief" being one of my all-time favourite songs. Now, before I get ahead of myself I noticed quickly that the band was bridging a gap and shedding the unnecessary hard and soft parts of songs. Instead, the obvious time spent on writing good music coupled with tracks that flowed as opposed to having a bunch of great parts was apparent. "What the..." is a cool song reminiscent of the poppier and mathier emo from 'Visiting Hours'. but "Instant Relief" is just amazing. The slow build with those twinkling guitar riffs will have you bobbing your head in no time. By the end of the first minute the drums and bass hop on the construction crew and build that riff until 1:44 when every instrument crescendos together with perfectly executed stop/start breakdowns and slight alterations on each repetition have made this the TERRY GREEN song, especially live (observe severe rockage right here). Honestly, this song is fucking unreal and an excellent taste of what's to come.
Speaking of what's to come, I've heard the six song demo titled 'Food City Demos' that will become their debut 12"LP that I am definitely going to help release it. It's awesome, and again, all I've heard are the demos. Well, I guess that's not entirely true, as I've seen four of the songs live which gets me even more excited. So, I've posted three of the currently unreleased songs as live videos so you can get a good taste of what the LP is going to sound like, as the new songs are way more mature, eclectic and powerful.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Zegema Beach Records and TERRY GREEN have kind of grown up together here in the Hamilton, Mississauga, Kitchener/Waterloo and Toronto scene over the last three years. I am so proud of these guys for continually making and playing such killer music and all the support they've given to ZBR as well as the shows that I've put on is more than appreciated. Every time I put on a show and people come out, after the TERRY GREEN set I always, fucking always, hear at least one person start gushing about how good "that band" was. Do yourself a favour and jam all that sweet, sweet, screamy post-hardcore below and if you have another 20 or so minutes watch the interview I did with the band at my house in mid-October 2016 right here or below. This interview is chock full of "Dave Norman Exclusive" scenes, as the band discusses a plethora of important decisions, generally for the first time!
