Sometime in 2018 I was sent an email about THE LORD'S WINNING TEAM. The email said I'd probably like it, and was addressed in a way that led me to believe that the submitee was aware of the style of music that I generally liked and reviewed. Although this music is quirky, excessive, over-the-top, abrasive and unstable it resonated with me through its own ridiculousness.
The band evolved from ANNE HERO and wrote the 8 songs contained on their only release from 2013-2015, playing only a few shows and attempting numerous times to record the songs, without success. In 2018 the members got together, banged out this release and have likely rescinded back into hiatus/broken-up territory. Their general sound is a mishmash of noise, sassy hardcore, chuggy sections, circus synths and utterly destroyed vocals, falling somewhere in Genghis Tron, Ed Gein and An Albatross land.
Their sole release, the very short 8 songs that are essentially a discography release, is titled 'Honey, I Know It's The End of the Last Quarter and We're Down a Few Points, But God's Gonna Throw Me a Hail Mary Pass, and When I Touch Down, I Know You'll Be Waiting For Me in the Endzone of...', to be referred to from now on as 'H, ikiteotlqawdafp, bggtmahmp, awitd, ikybwfmiteo...' because otherwise this review will get outta hand, although perhaps it already has. It opens with "The Countess", an absolute mind-fuck of an opener that brings to mind the new Binary EP as well as the almighty An Albatross and is over in a mere 49 seconds and even includes some death growls and panic chords after the first 10 second. "Self-Ostracizing" is just 23 seconds of sassy hardcore, falling almost exclusively in the sassy section and includes no fantastical freakouts, while "Gas-Lighting Myself as a Result of Gaslighting Myself" is the chuggy, hyperactive sibling that goes all out for 32 seconds in a tornado of lightning bolts. "THE CURSE IS REAL!!!" is perhaps the most An Albatross in style, as the carnival sounds come out in full force to fight alongside the destructive, violent false grind. "Molotov Cocktease" is more in line with .gif from god and early SeeYouSpaceCowboy and will likely turn a few heads should you give the track a chance, as the 40-second banger emanates sassy metalcore like the best of'em. "Permaseal" rides a nightmare wave that follows an audio clip intro and ends on what might well be Pennywise the Clown's personal theme song. The ridiculously titled "Asses to Asses, Bust to Bust (Rattlesnake Charm)" is the longest song at a measly 1:20 but still follows a similar formula, although the trippy bass transition is a very cool lead-in to the song's implosion. Closer "v&" is the shortest track at 16 seconds and is more of an outro than anything.
Bam. A relatively short review...but not as short as this highly unstable, destructive and sinister release.
