I don't need to dance around any facts here, the three-piece TRACK OF MONARCHS were ex-Welcome The Plague Year and that's all I need to say about that...cuz besides knowing these "live" songs were recorded in 2006 and then the band called it quits, that's all I got. The only other thing I know is that it's a fucking shame, cuz these floor me even with poorly recorded live takes.

"1 - pittsburgh, pa (6.28.06)" blows out a huge, epic opening riff that is hoisted up by Jon's incredible bass. After a quite bit the bombastic intro swings back around again after the one-minute mark before taking a nice, tranquil, instrumental stroll by the river. So very, very Welcome The Plague Year, especially that 7-minute run-time.

"2 - kent, oh (6.29.06)" begins like a flurry of screamo, sounding more like Neil Perry than anything else, at least for the first minute. After that the song takes a dark, uncomfortable turn that leads to more chaos after nearly two minutes of subtle nightmares.

"3 - kent, oh (6.29.06)" is the first song here to take its time getting into it, as the song meanders about until the two-minute mark when things pick up, and really get heated at 2:30 with the inclusion of more-audible-than-usual screaming. The song itself is a bit awkward and disjointed, giving me the impression this was written later - but in actuality I have no idea what I'm talking about.

"4 - detroit, mi (6.30.06)" is the shortest track here at 3:44 but it doesn't have the power and intensity that I was hoping for - at least on June 30th, 2006 apparently.

"5 - fort wayne, in (7.1.06)" is the final song and it's a doozy. Boasting some insane drumming and prodigious swells, the song is excellent but the vocals are buried so deep they've practically drowned...or maybe they were never there to begin with?

  1. thanks for posting this. I oddly enough don't have access to the original recordings. this was a fun but very short lived band.

  2. that first track from Pittsburgh was actually the last WTPY song we were working on before breaking up. It was so hard to learn on drums.
