ÊTRE are a band that I found out about two years later than I should have, as I acquired some 10"s for the Zegema Beach Records distro from Skeletal Lightning back in the day and didn't get around to giving some a proper listen until late 2018. When I first jammed the ÊTRE/Janapalach split I remember thinking, woah, this ÊTRE band sounds weird. Like Eminem meets Daïtro or something. And in typical Dave fashion, if I am even slightly intrigued and it's not a fucking stream I'll dip into it again, and so I did. About 1,000,000 fucking times. On second listen I was like, oh this is pretty cool, I think I might actually like this. On the third I was like, yeeeeeeeeeah and by the fourth I was dancing around my house and singing their praises to my wife. I have even reached out to the band to inquire about their future plans, and found out that a new EP should be coming out this year!

In 2013 they released their 'Demo' EP and it's okay, as it shows the band in their infancy. The first two tracks are decent, and although "Alle Gegen Alle" is perhaps a little too drenched in keyboards, the rest of the track is best thing on the EP.

In 2015 the band revealed a new LP titled 'Konstruktion.Destruktion.'. It is decent and acts as a transitionary release, showing glimmers of awesomeness mixed with mediocre parts. "Kreis" has intriguing vocal placement and repetitive lyrics that'll have you singing (or should I say talking) along. "Entweder Oder?" drops into heavy guitars at two minutes, giving it flavor not unlike their 10" split, but you'll find gang vocals and some nice screaming in there too. Closer "Großstadtkunst" is without a doubt the most straight-forward screamo jam here, and perhaps the best song to boot.

And then in late 2016 ÊTRE appeared on an incredible split 10" with the Ukraine's Janpalach. It opens with my favourite song by the band, which is also the most experimental, as "Blau Auf Blau" was the soundtrack to my end of 2018. Seriously folks, I've listened to this song at least 50 times in 3 months...it was an addiction. It opens with a twinkly emo riff that is soon layered with desperate talking/singing, followed by gang vocals and a sick drum fill that drops the first Daïtro-esque chorus on the listener at 50 seconds. And holy fuck what a chorus. It's catchy, screamy, heavy, driving and breathtaking. The song then dips back into the spoken word but strings together placement that definitely boasts rap influences, again leading perfectly to that mindblowing chorus that takes another step onto a swelling bridge that brings to mind Young Mountain, Yarostan, Aleska and Boneflower. The second and last inclusion by ÊTRE is "Phänomen", a short, playful and very positive sounding post-rock, post-hardcore, emo and slightly screamo jam. This is the closest the band has come to singing, and that verse that passes through the one-minute mark is the most rap-sounding thing they've done, and it's followed by the catchiest stuff they've done. The ending from two minutes onward is very driving and wraps up their side perfectly. It's the increase of the instrumental capabilities and a much strong and more confident vocalist that make this release a stellar one.

If you are looking for a very different and experimental (also read rap/spoken word) hardcore or screamo, you've come to the right place, as ÊTRE play something you've likely never heard before, and it's fucking awesome. And I'm ecstatic for this new EP.
