Debut EP 'An Anxious Surface' is very metalcore in the Norma Jean, early The Dillinger Escape Plan and Arcana Cain kind of way, with "Untitled" probably the best example of this. "Observe the Octopus" and "1330 Miles From The Lighthouse" are also bangers, but "De Vliegende Hollander" holds the most weight, not unlike early Lamantide, I Am A Curse and Litany For The Whale, making it my favourite from the album.
'3-way split' with Hexis and As We Draw, contributing three tracks. "Before After" takes over a minute of feedback and noise before they being the slow, deliberate and evil as fuck doom. "After the Before" is also two minutes and change, but the devastating nature of the vocals and pummeling drums make it a much more enjoyable listen than the opener. Their final track is titled "Renaissance", taking a middle-of-the-road approach and making it slow and heavy, but still driving and engaging, with the vocals around a minute sounding exactly like The Chariot.
Their 'Близость' EP released in 2013 is EUGLENA's transition from very good to ridiculous. All cylinders are firing red-hot, chaotic and piercing math-metal/hardcore that most readers of this blog will love, and can be likened to bands such as Egarra, Kiss The Sky Goodbye, Lamantide and Lentic Waters. "Еретик" starts things off with a lone, distant and eerie guitar that blows up at 45 seconds and continues its dark and ominous onslaught until its 3:19 conclusion. "Хиросима" is just as crushing as the first, but the slowdown comes midway through the song and it stays that course. "Правда" is ballistic and the first 20 seconds are enough to destroy most bands who try anything even remotely similar. By 50 seconds things get even more epic and the general, dark and brooding metallic hardcore sound reminds me a lot of I Am A Curse. "Семь Кругов" is another raging song with evil guitars and unbelievable drumming, while closer and title track "Близость" is a slow, grooving instrumental jam.
The following year they released the 'General Lee split', a prodigious and destructive two-song endeavor that opens with "Дно". This thing is just silly, as it lays waste to listener until about 1:30 when they kick in a lengthy groove, with the entire thing kinda reminding me of Buried Inside but much more dense. "Желчь" is nearly 8 minutes in length, making it the longest track by the band by far. The intro extends to nearly two minutes before putting the listener in a metalcore blender. At 2:42 the song's gravitational pull doubles and will suck you and by its apocalyptic end, it will erase you and your family from history.
In 2016 EUGLENA released the 7" that was the catalyst for me checking them out, and that was their 'Колчак split'. I picked up a few copies for the Zegema Beach distro (7" linked here) from Dingleberry Records and was forced to keep a copy back for myself. They have but a single song here, although it doesn't stop it from being my favourite EUGLENA track thus far. "Всадник" is 3:32 of exactly what I want from my music. The insane drumming and gripping instrumentals will shake you, and the ability of the vocalist to weave through higher pitched screams and medium-level, hoarse yelling is astounding. There are so many shifts, transitions and phenomenal parts to this song that to try and dissect it would take me 500 words easy, and fuck that. This song is seriously genius and one of the best things I've ever heard.
I want to start a band that can sound like this, good god.
This post's artist is from the June 2018 Mix. This is track #3.
