I picked up a bunch of copies of the MONUMENTS COLLAPSE and Breag Naofa gatefold split 12" (get'em here) a few months back because I love Breag Naofa. I heard an extremely pleasant surprise when I spun the b-side of the record and jammed these San Francisco fellas. In fact, I would go as far as saying that their side is superior to the Breag Naofa side, although both bands dabble in a very similar vein of post-hardcore/post-metal with crushingly heavy vocals. I nabbed their self-titled 12"LP afterwards and haven't looked back since. I'm doing my best to get involved with the band's tentative 2015 LP release because they are so fucking good.
MONUMENTS COLLAPSE play an epic, atmospheric, driving, sludgy and heavy brand of post-hardcore/metal. If you dig bands like Isis, Amber, Tephra, Cult Of Luna and Buried Inside then you are going to love this. The debut LP is pretty good and reminds me of Neurosis and Fall Of Efrafa. but it's not until the split 12" with Breag Naofa that they really hit their stride.
The songs are absolutely massive and never let up. They sometimes build into a climax, but that generally starts from the beginning of the song, as opposed to a plodding section being placed in the middle of a track and slowing down the pace built by the foundation of the song. These guys build from the get-go and once they hit the good stuff they do not let up. There are even points where the riffs share similarities to Godspeed You! Black Empeoror, Funeral Diner and City Of Caterpillar because of the dreamy plucking.
From the split, I love "Starvation" but "Pathos" is a goddamn masterpiece. Check it out below and if you want to hear their older style and have 20 minutes to kill, hit up "Out Of Darkness" from their self-titled 12". There's also a great 11-minutes video for Pathos linked here.
