LA MANTRA DE FHIQRIA is another one of those bands that I found out about completely by accident, and that's why I love splits. I first heard these guys on their Bleeding Kansas split 12" (which is fantastic, by they way) because Bleeding Kansas are fucking badass. LA MANTRA plays a much different style. While BK opts for Botch playing in a barn/stable kind of music (that's supposed to mean "southern-tinged"), LA MANTRA is a spazztic, chaotic and pummeling metal/grind-influenced screamo band.

Just listen to "Lackluster". The songs starts out with some back and forth bouncy rock/screamo riffs not unlike Phoenix Bodies-lite, but at the 51-second mark the song explodes into some extremely aggressive and off-timed craziness. The band's best moment takes place at the end of this song, when the band all but stops at the 1:51-mark, save for the drummer, who starts up one of my favourite all-time drumming sequences, which ends up sounding a lot like Off Minor's Steve Roche, and builds to an epic close.

For your information, this band had 2 vocalists. One great screamy vocalist [who went on to form (lone) Wolf & Cub] and one guy who can't really sing. He can scream, but when he sings it reminds of Yage's weaker songs - which detracts from parts of the band's music, but overall it makes little difference, as the LA MANTRA is so great in every other aspect.
