I was only recently introduced to CREEPER when I went to a Loma Prieta show (reviewed here) about 3 months ago. They've been around the Toronto area for the better part of half a decade, yet I had no knowledge of them. When I saw them blast through an 18-minute set, I was floored. I quickly spoke with 2 members of the band following their set and asked if they would be interested in an interview. Rob, the new vocalist (as he recently took over vocal duties for Zach, who is pursuing Animal Faces full-time) said they'd be down at which point guitarist Braeden saw my Great Redneck Hope shirt - and we've been in contact since.
When I first tried to pigeonhole their sound (which is a bit of an asshole thing to do, but my brain needs a connection to existing bands in order to properly lump a new band in to my existing musical schema), I heard an amalgamation of Cassilis, Graf Orlock, Phoenix Bodies with Botch vocals. If you like any of the bands in the "for fans of" section, check out CREEPER, as you will not be disappointed. They play a style of punk/hardcore that draws heavily from down-tuned, grimy sludge-metal while incorporating some great blast beats, mathy breakdowns and screaming galore. The best tracks to properly acquaint yourself with CREEPER would be from their new split with Canyons.
I should probably talk about why this split is so important.
Progression. Wow. Talk about hitting your stride. CREEPER's earlier material always showed promise and included a few decent cuts, but this split is a different beast altogether. From what I gathered during the interview, this band has been having fun playing music for 5 years. It's only been in the last 2 years that CREEPER has seen themselves as a legitimate hardcore band. They no longer play shows purely to have fun with their friends, as they have progressed as a band and musicians, gotten more technical and proficient with their duties and seem to be very self-aware. These guys are friendly, down-to-earth people who are on the cusp of breaking into the international hardcore scene. Jeez, these new songs are killer.
Speaking of new songs, the band will be recording in the next month or so. Yippe ki yay, motherfucker.

The interview is posted on the Zegema Beach Records page, because it was too long to post here (15 pages!) - as this was an interview where I actually sat down with the band and later transcribed it. I've included a few snippets from the interview below, and there are live videos from the show that night (July 27, 2013) embedded in the interview - click the address below to read the interview and watch the videos. This was a massive project which took lots of time, and the guys in CREEPER have been super patient and awesome about the entire thing. Thanks to anyone who checks it out.
