...and updates

Jesus fuck christ what a month. What would have been an enjoyable and relaxing month became a shitshow thanks to storenvy's stock system, server ability and customer service. After some stock issues with Destroyer Destroyer, the Dr. Acula 12" straight up tore storenvy a new asshole. After noticing multiple errors, we contacted them and received a few pathetic emails back telling us to do the legwork so they didn't overcharge us, and they never even tried to restore stock levels for us.

So, as you can imagine, we are dropping that sad sack of shit known as storenvy in hopes that bigcartel can handle the myspace grind traffic. We have been assured by friends that their servers will hold.

On Saturday December 14th, 2019 Wax Vessel and Zegema Beach will officially release the final stock copies that surfaced after the storenvy implosion at the new site. Although not active yet, the store can be found via the following links:

https://www.waxvessel.com
as well as
https://waxvesselrecords.bigcartel.com

It's also worth noting that until December 24th at 11:59pm PST all Zegema Beach Records store purchases are entered into a raffle to win a SAWTOOTH GRIN 12" test press of 'Cuddlemonster'! Orders of $50+ get 3 entries, and you can enter once at each store, making it possible to enter 6 times. Winner drawn on xmas.

As always, on or around the 1st of every month, I will be posting a ZIP file with songs for the upcoming month with ALL specifics deleted from the tags, so unless you already know the band, there is NO information regarding each track.

During the following month, I will post reviews for those bands and link the tracks to the review so you can associate the two together. This way you can listen to a new song/band and have little-to-no bias. Below, I have re-posted the December mp3 mix that is used for this month's reviews.

Any bands/labels that are interested in having their stuff reviewed, please email zegemabeachrecords@gmail.com: with "Open Mind Saturated Brain" as the subject. Please keep in mind that I don't review everything, just what jives with the blog. I will, however, listen to everything you send me. I would recommend emailing with an idea for a song/album premiere 2 months prior to that song/album release date for a much stronger chance at being reviewed on this blog. Bands that have already had their discography reviewed can also submit new albums for review if they include song/album premieres.

***PODCAST #37 + Cybergrind show review***

PODCAST #37 + Show Review
with
WATABOU / VANTANA ROW / DECIDE TODAY / HITORI TORI / DIVA PLAVALAGUNA
@The Avant-Garden on November 21st, 2019

My friend Henrietta invited me to a cybergrind show that they had set up through Kitty On Fire Records. I met a bunch of really awesome people and witnessed a style of show that I've never seen before...and it was also awesome. We collectively did a podcast before the show which was very fun and informative. Henrietta and Miggy also help run Emocat Records and play in opener Diva Plavalaguna. Robert (aka Decide Today) and Rebecca (aka Watabou) are currently on tour together, with Volly and Jamey (aka Vantana Row) making the trip up from California. Not present for the podcast was Hitori Tori, but I snagged a video, embedded below. I think it's worth noting that this show was sponsored by Sharetea BC who gave out tea to everyone in attendance. Below is the podcast playlist, separated into two parts at around 19 minutes apiece.

1
YATAGARASU - "Your Perspective (Arumana)" (Watabou)
EARTH CRISIS - "Wrath of Sanity" (Decide Today)
JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS - "Shapeshifter" (Vantana Row)

2
OVÄDER - "12:8" (Emocat Records)
WATABOU - "Wound Juice" (Kitty On Fire Records)
ANTARCTICA - "Lazerz 30 Airsoft 5" (Zegema Beach Records)

WATABOU
Henrietta keeps telling me that finding great cybergrind is not an easy task, so when I witnessed the solo artist known as WATABOU rip through 30 minutes of very intense, chaotic, melodic and dancey digital hardcore that left a big ole smile on my face. Rebecca, you are hella talented.

VANTANA ROW
This two-piece were super chill and a joy to talk to. I love their aesthetic as well as the fact that they play "drive-by" shows, during which they pull up outside of a venue and play outside their van. That's fucking sick. Volly told me that they play cybergrind, but not in the traditional sense, as they use the bits of cyber and grind that most other bands leave behind when mashing the two together. Good set? Fuckin' right.

DIVA PLAVALAGUNA
This three-piece gets better and better every time I see them...wait that's normal isn't it? Regardless, this band is too much fun. A keytar and three vocalists? Fuuuuuuck yes. Sassy, synthy and shrieky, they've got your S' covered. They played at least one new song (captured) and that screechy feedback jam-fest that gets everyone moving. Mmmmm baby.

DECIDE TODAY
I've never seen anything like this, as Robert from Cincinnati uses a bunch of different tapes with samples on them and then manipulates them as well as screams over them. It's very cool to see, and he's on tour now with Rebecca and Watabou so check that shit out. He's a very well-spoken and supportive person that also runs Realicide Records.
(2019) DECIDE TODAY
For fans of: anarcho + industrial

THE SAWTOOTH GRIN began back in 1999, with their first vinyl release seeing the light of day in 2019 (and selling out in less than an hour) thanks to the monumental label Wax Vessel. They featured members from a dizzying array of incredible bands including, but not limited to, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Horse The Band and Snake Baptist, releasing just two cdEPs and some demos in their five year existence. Two quick things from ZBR and OMSB really quick in case you missed them:

In 2001 THE SAWTOOTH GRIN released their debut EP 'Cuddlemonster' on cd via Dead By 1918 which featured six tracks of sprawling, unhinged and wild jazzy mathcore with outrageous, larynx-death shrieks, as well as a truly catchy instrumental jam that is nearly the complete opposite of the preceding songs. My quintessential pick is track five's "Please Shit All Over Me, I Love It", clocking in at nearly five-minutes and jam-fucking packed full of parts to melt your brain. My personal favourites are:
- Dillinger Escape Plan-esque at around 35 seconds
- massive, multi-vocal breakdown after the minute mark
- swirling guitars at 1:45
- sassy-as-fuck spoken word at 3:20
Other notable slaps to face are "A 2 Minute Lecture On The Finer Points Of Instability" (with its uncanny ability to mix excessive speed with a sense of rhythm, remind me most of The Great Redneck Hope), "Sometimes She Tasted Like Burnt Plastic Smells" (true vocal destruction) and the aforementioned instrumental groove-a-thon "Good Touch Bad Touch 123" (recycling a clean, rock-driven riff that layers are slathered on top of, creating a beautiful and catchy closer).

2004 saw the EP release of 'Pervavor' as well as the band's first official breakup. This thing is ridiculous, extreme, caustic grindcore with an excellent balance of rhythm, catchiness and sheer chaos. The opening/title track "Pervavor" wastes no time in letting listeners know that with a new guitarist they were ready to kick it up a notch. The jazzy, semi-clean guitars are mostly ditched in favor of seething, discordant and downright aggressive metal/grind and I gotta say it really pays off. The vocals are also much darker and shriekier, bearing resemblance to Robinson, Oktober Skyline and Machinist. "Boxcutter Facelift" and "Rapekit Aficionado" are even heavier and bring in a bit of deathcore into the mix, giving me hella Owen Hart's 7" vibes.

In 2009 the band got back together with a few different members and recorded the 'Jabberwocky Demos' which were intended for an upcoming full length which was never recorded as THE SAWTOOTH GRIN disbanded again in 2012, destroying all hope of a finished recording. This is truly a bummer as these three songs (as well as "Untitled Demo 5" and a few other instrumental tunes from the same session) are arguably the band's strongest and most brain-shattering material. "Dead Ringers" toys with the listener before activating ludicrous speed after the 30-second mark, "The Jesus Hive" throws around some ballistic bass amidst the already swirling cacophony of noise and closer "Montrose Jackals" is perhaps the most extreme of any SAWTOOTH GRIN jam, igniting the speakers with a vast array of mathy arrangements with the most venomous, acidic and destroyed vocals I've ever had the pleasure of hearing.

A few months back my label Zegema Beach Records was contacted by Wax Vessel to help distribute their releases and our first mission together was the 'Cuddlemonster' 12"s, and boy-oh-boy I knew the band was popular but two of the three variants sold out in less than five minutes. The work by Wax Vessel to bring the EP to vinyl life was exceptional, as is the art done by Ben Hoagland. There are the three variants as well as six wax mage copies and five test presses. One of the five test presses was donated by Wax Vessel to Zegema Beach for a contest December 1st-24th, 2019. To win said test press, simply enter by buying anything from the ZBR U.S.A. store or the ZBR Canada/International store. Orders over $50 get three entries, and you can enter once in each store, thus making six entries possible. I will draw the winner on December 25th, 2019 and post it here as well as on the Zegema Beach Records facebook page. Someone is gonna very fucking happy.
