***PODCAST #37 + Cybergrind show review***

PODCAST #37 + Show Review
with
WATABOU / VANTANA ROW / DECIDE TODAY / HITORI TORI / DIVA PLAVALAGUNA
@The Avant-Garden on November 21st, 2019

My friend Henrietta invited me to a cybergrind show that they had set up through Kitty On Fire Records. I met a bunch of really awesome people and witnessed a style of show that I've never seen before...and it was also awesome. We collectively did a podcast before the show which was very fun and informative. Henrietta and Miggy also help run Emocat Records and play in opener Diva Plavalaguna. Robert (aka Decide Today) and Rebecca (aka Watabou) are currently on tour together, with Volly and Jamey (aka Vantana Row) making the trip up from California. Not present for the podcast was Hitori Tori, but I snagged a video, embedded below. I think it's worth noting that this show was sponsored by Sharetea BC who gave out tea to everyone in attendance. Below is the podcast playlist, separated into two parts at around 19 minutes apiece.

1
YATAGARASU - "Your Perspective (Arumana)" (Watabou)
EARTH CRISIS - "Wrath of Sanity" (Decide Today)
JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS - "Shapeshifter" (Vantana Row)

2
OVÄDER - "12:8" (Emocat Records)
WATABOU - "Wound Juice" (Kitty On Fire Records)
ANTARCTICA - "Lazerz 30 Airsoft 5" (Zegema Beach Records)

WATABOU
Henrietta keeps telling me that finding great cybergrind is not an easy task, so when I witnessed the solo artist known as WATABOU rip through 30 minutes of very intense, chaotic, melodic and dancey digital hardcore that left a big ole smile on my face. Rebecca, you are hella talented.

VANTANA ROW
This two-piece were super chill and a joy to talk to. I love their aesthetic as well as the fact that they play "drive-by" shows, during which they pull up outside of a venue and play outside their van. That's fucking sick. Volly told me that they play cybergrind, but not in the traditional sense, as they use the bits of cyber and grind that most other bands leave behind when mashing the two together. Good set? Fuckin' right.

DIVA PLAVALAGUNA
This three-piece gets better and better every time I see them...wait that's normal isn't it? Regardless, this band is too much fun. A keytar and three vocalists? Fuuuuuuck yes. Sassy, synthy and shrieky, they've got your S' covered. They played at least one new song (captured) and that screechy feedback jam-fest that gets everyone moving. Mmmmm baby.

DECIDE TODAY
I've never seen anything like this, as Robert from Cincinnati uses a bunch of different tapes with samples on them and then manipulates them as well as screams over them. It's very cool to see, and he's on tour now with Rebecca and Watabou so check that shit out. He's a very well-spoken and supportive person that also runs Realicide Records.
(2019) DECIDE TODAY
For fans of: anarcho + industrial
