Review by Thomas Schlatter:
HAWAK honor us with three songs that show this band can put in the work. The musicianship on these songs is so impressive and smooth. Everyone is pulling their weight here and the results are excellent. I'm hearing likenesses to Off Minor, Capsule, Republic of Dreams, Itto, Crowning; bands that can bring a screamy intensity but still manage to insert off time beats with dancing guitar/bass runs.
As a musician I must admit I eat this up. My first listen I found myself in anticipation to see what direction each song would go in. The songwriting is unconventional, but not choppy or unsettling in anyway. They really steer the mood and the atmosphere quite well using different tempos and dynamics. If you like that jazzy guitar of Off Minor, the shouted vocals of Capsule and the insane drumming of Itto, then you'll really like how this band sounds like a composite of all three of those.
The lyrics are somehwat abstract but all seem to carry a theme of feeling isolated and without a place. The vocal placement is pretty outstanding considering the fevered pace of the music, and also considering Tomm and Jonathan are playing their instruments while screaming. This release made my top of 2018 list and I'm pretty thankful that folks like this are out there putting this down on tape.
If you want to see the band they are playing a ridiculous show with our friends in Senza on January 17th in San Francisco. Facebook even page linked here.
