POETRY OF TORCH are from Japan and play blown-out and destructive hardcore/screamo/emo-violence. I was lucky enough to premiere two songs of theirs last year and picked up some tapes of the '4-Way split' for the ZBR distro as well as a personal copy because this band stole the fucking show.

With only the four songs on the split released currently, upon first listen I was simultaneously hooked and annihilated. Their opener "Kneel Young" wastes nearly no time letting you know that it's going to be a violent, cacophony of noise, harboring an frighteningly unstable transition at the 25-second mark that'll leave you in shock. "Fake" is also extremely intense, but slow it down a tad halfway through to show that they can still topple you without the use of furious speed. "Sink Into My Lust" takes a very dark turn at 50 seconds and boasts a head-bobbin' dancey part from 1:07 while closer "Blasphemy and Cry" erupts around 10 seconds in and subsequently throttles the listener for the remaining 1:21 of the song.

The band recently played with my friends Massa Nera, and Chris took some videos of them destroying it live. You can check them via facebook video here and here. I won't divulge much but I can say that I've been contacted about doing an upcoming split 7" with another amazing Japanese band so hopefully that comes together later this year.

This post's artist is from the April 2019 Mix. This is track #7.

The only reason I know about HERLENS is because I was told to check out Zdzis Law because my friend knew I liked Poetry Of Torch (shared members). After jamming the other band's side of the 'Zdzis Law split' I started focused on HERLENS to see if the band was worth more of my time, and good golly it definitely was. They dabble in a late 90s/early 2000s screamo vibe, giving nods to Funeral Diner, some dancey Nebraska-emo and, obviously, their homeland Japan's influences such as Yarmulke and Blue Friend.

They only released the split, so I've only encountered five tracks. Opener "イルミナシオン" begins as a towering, palm-muted affair only to switch to swirling Euro/Malaysian emo right before the one-minute mark. It slows down considerable and meanders for a bit before come back around huge at around 2:55 with a massive, metallic breakdown. "ヴェロニカの残したいパイ" is barely a song at 13 seconds long, but yeah...stuff happens, instruments are played and some vocals are screamed. "とは" is the opposite as it a whopping 6:54 in length, approximately 30 times longer than the previous song. This thing is awesome and sways around like Thema Eleven and Funeral Diner, with a guitar build that hits an incredible swing during the choruses. "Babayaga" is only 6 seconds and I'm not gonna try to do the math thing again...but my initial calculations say that this might be ridiculously short. Closer "また会おう、エミ" falls in line with tracks one and three, creating a beautiful-yet-eerie screamo jam with all of textbook moves.

Seeing as there has been five years of inactivity it's probably safe to say that the band is defunct. Go check out Poetry Of Torch, they are active and absolutely incredible.

As always, on or around the 1st of every month, I will be posting a ZIP file with songs for the upcoming month with ALL specifics deleted from the tags, so unless you already know the band, there is NO information regarding each track.

During the following month, I will post reviews for those bands and link the tracks to the review so you can associate the two together. This way you can listen to a new song/band and have little-to-no bias. Below, I have re-posted the April mp3 mix that is used for this month's reviews.

Any bands/labels that are interested in having their stuff reviewed, please email zegemabeachrecords@gmail.com: with "Open Mind Saturated Brain" as the subject. Please keep in mind that I don't review everything, just what jives with the blog. I will, however, listen to everything you send me. I would recommend emailing with an idea for a song/album premiere 2 months prior to that song/album release date for a much stronger chance at being reviewed on this blog. Bands that have already had their discography reviewed can also submit new albums for review if they include song/album premieres.
