NEW RUINS is a new band from Halifax over on the East side of Canada. I became aware of their existence relatively early on as they boast members of Frail Hands, Hiesse and Rinoa and a member was interested to hear my opinion so I was sent this. I am hella glad I was, too, cuz it's a sick debut EP. The band definitely dips into the hardcore/metalcore realm more than the screamo when, at least when comparing them to their other musical endeavours, as guitarist Yousef (sick riffs that are all over the place) and vocalist Nick (who somehow makes screaming catchy) are the most notable forces in the attack. If you were to try and pin a few bands' sounds to NEW RUINS it wouldn't surprise me if you said The Bled, The Fall Of Troy and a bit of Prize The Doubt.
So in early 2018 they released their self titled, five-track EP 'New Ruins'. The first thing that jumped out at me was the eclectic mixture of styles contained in just the first song alone. "Waltz" is definitely the most progressive song, featuring clean, almost choir-esque singing, a biting guitar lead that could hook a shark, dual screaming as well as perfect drum and bass accents. "Dagger" is a bit more straightforward, definitely giving some nods to The Fall Of Troy with those guitars, but it's the vocal lines that stick with me the most, in particular "cuz I'm spending all my time alone". There's also a cool spoken word section and some throat-shredding screams. Next up is "Flesh", my personal jam. At 2:06 it is definitely the most straightforward affair on the record which is led by a chorus of, "Waiting for me to bleed out! Holding in all my insides!" and raging instrumentals. "Jean City" was the first single released from the EP and I find it to be the weakest of the five, but it's still a very good song it just doesn't have the heaviness of the strong sections and the hooks of the memorable parts. "Narcissism" is a fitting closer, as the first half is your typical, varied and engaging NEW RUINS stuff with the second half being more chaotic and destructive than even "Flesh".
The band is currently planning on a split release with Curtains, whom also have been reviewed here, so keep your eyes and ears open for that ridiculousness.
This post's artist is from the October 2018 Mix. This is track #?.
