FAULTS, or FAULT/S as you may also know them, hail from Baltimore and released a wicked fine EP earlier this summer. I checked out their back catalogue and was impressed with their 2015 EP as well, so I wrote this thang.
The band's debut EP was released in June of 2015 and is more than decent for what it is. The four songs of hardcore combine screamo, emo, rock and a bit of post-hardcore. Generally speaking, this is a screamo record first, as are the releases to follow, and is best exemplified on the killer "Just Tap It In" (which must be a Happy Gilmore quote) with its tappy, twinkly opener and bass clicks until 30 seconds when the vocals come in half-singing and lead to a jammy number that breaks its own mold at 2:29 with screaming atop soaring emo/post-hardcore instrumentals - hot damn what an ending.
In May of 2016 they dropped the track "Soaring Like An Eagle, Shitting On Politicians" on a benefit compilation two weeks before the release of 'Falls', an excellent three song ditty that includes the aforementioned song with heavy nods (intended or not) to the style of screamo that Tunes For Bears To Dance To and D'Amore were playing 15 years ago. "Cuts Like A River" is my personal favourite by the band. This song builds from the get-go with rolling drums and an explosion that is reminiscent of Sleeper Wave, At 35 seconds in we get to hear the first palm-mute and ring-out that could easily be a European screamo band like Raein, Shizune or Rainmaker. The song swirls around for the middle and goes apeshit at 1:50 with some insane drumming that probably taxes all members of the band which most likely is the reason the song ends at 2:30. The closer is "Get Rich Or Try Dyin'" is an excellent song with dual vocals and raw but powerful guitars that weave in and out of each other.
The band has some shows on Sept 29th, 2016 @Metro Gallery in Baltimore and Oct 1st, 2016 @Raven's Inn in Towson and is therefore, I'm assuming, writing new material that I am fucking stoked to hear, especially considering the band's movement towards heavier, screamy hardcore.
