Looking for sonically dense metalcore like Lentic Waters, Lavotchkin and Converge? Bam, LAMANTIDE from Italy. I picked up a single copy of their cdLP for a trade with Shove Records after hearing it sounded like Botch, which is all too accurate as LAMANTIDE bust out a Botch cover of "The Opera Song" (titled "O Fortuna") and it's very, very similar to the original in all respects - especially amazingness. The band plays some really thick, rustic and chuggy metallic hardcore with a lot of dark, crusty and evil subtleties.
The aforementioned cd 'Lamantide' was recorded way back in 2010 and released in 2011 on a sick screenprinted jewel case. There are three standout tracks with the most obvious being "Misero, Grido" which is an insane song. This barrels along at breakneck speeds until 43 seconds in when the guitars begin to build to the 55-second mark when the breakdown kicks in and at 1:07 it builds further in order to reach the 1:19 crescendo of headbanging goodness and dual vocals. The song then meanders into bleak ambiance for a short while before returning to evil-soaked back and forth screams that reach an epic close as the fade-out begins at 2:43. "E I Giorni Una Maceria" is a short but good indicator of what's to come one the record (it's track 3) and has some nice, post-hardcore intro leanings before ripping faces off at the 38-second mark. "Nihil Ergo Sum" is a good bridge track to get into the band as it has a little more melody than the other songs (it's still really heavy) especially at the 18-second mark when the guitars stop while the drums roll through the breakdown and again at 1:05 with what I would dub the "conclusion" breakdown even though it happens during the first half of the song but in essence leads the song out early. Check out the music video for this track below. "Senza Colore" is the last one I'll touch upon, as it is just shy of two minutes and is a scorcher with almost no letting up save for the palm-muted punk/post-hardcore bit in the middle of the song.
LAMANTIDE will be releasing a new five-song EP that Zegema Beach Records will be helping with later this year (I'd wager summer-fall 2015). These five songs are thicker, heavier and darker than the fantastic cd released almost half a decade ago but retain the same mood, style and general aesthetic. I'd post a teaser but the songs aren't finished being mastered so you'll have to wait :( but know this EP is fucking stellar. Think Lentic Waters meet Rorcal. Also, ZBR will be working with LAMANTIDE on a future project that will blow your goddamn socks off in 2016.
