SEPTEMBER was introduced to me by Tony of Congratulations. What an obscure, amazing find. 4 songs of subdued midwestern emo and a comp track that sounds hell of a lot like D'Amore and Indian Summer to these ears. The most obvious influence and styling revolve around Indian Summer, but I must say this, I like the way SEPTEMBER do it better. The songs have a loud/soft dynamic, but in the neo-chaotic back-and-forth style. They systematically build each section until it reverberates and then explodes. You will see these moments coming, and you'll be salivating. I love the newer dynamic but in a way it takes less effort because the transitions may work, but do not lie seamlessly within the structure of the song. SEPTEMBER are intricate without being mathy, and obviously focused a lot of effort in creating the most fitting piece of music, whether it was a note, rhythm or overall feeling to transition from each part to the next.

My personal favourite from the 4 songs is "Creekside Train" which has a killer bass riff that leads the verses and some spoken word/yelled vocals which lead to a Funeral Diner-sounding instrumental build and dual screaming straight from the book of 'Difference Of Potential'. Not surprisingly, this song also reminds me a lot of Congratulations and you can really hear the influence. "Scattered Blue Light" is so D'Amore that I can barely contain myself sometimes. This song is a long, drawn-out masterpiece with 3-minute intro with simple, 90s emo riffing and spoken word vocals and is reminiscent of D'Amore's "Boyz II Men Song" with it's 10-minute track time. After the intro we are greeted with more epic, full and engaging choruses that are chock full of call and response screaming, which I'm a sucker for. If you can handle long songs check this one out, and if longer songs aren't your bag, hit up "Creekside Train" first.

Right before posting this, my pal Greg in People's Temple Project informed me of a comp track that has the title of the initial 10" as the song name, "Erasmia Pulcella". I was not aware of. I've only listened to it 3 times, but imagine the 10" if the band listened to a bit more Spirit Of Versailles and Saetia and you've got the right idea. The vocals are much screamier and the recording quality is much better. Definitely one of the band's best. Thanks, Greg!

I remember reading somewhere that the vocals were recorded in one of the band members' front yards, so you can hear a dog barking, cars and apparently even an angry neighbour. There's something oddly comforting about that. This release is being talked about more now than it was almost 20 years ago when it was dropped on Simba Recordings and Tree Records. Chances are you haven't heard of these guys before and if you like the band's mentioned above you've found just your jamz for the next few days. Thanks, Tony. You rule!
