If Avenged Sevenfold didn't suck severe ass, would they have sounded like JOHNNY TRUANT? Probably. Everything that Avenged Sevenfold cheesed up and made sound shitty can be counterbalanced with JOHNNY TRUANT. Who is Johnny Truant, you ask? Why he's a character in one of my favourite books - House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewsi.

Back to the band. First called Severence, JOHNNY TRUANT changed their name after recording a few demos and settling on a sound - metalcore with grind and hints of death-metal. That is all. There's not crazy variety going on here, but fans of screamy/growly metalcore with lots of protractors and calculators will certainly appreciate the way the way these guys formulate their music. The releases vary from high-pitched screeching from some winged creatures to lower-end guttural growls. The drumming has some crazy beats and there are almost no soft/slow moments on any record. Lastly, they like long songs - especially on the first record. I don't love this genre, but these guys made it interesting. As a side note, my wife loves Converge but can't fucking stand these guys.
