I don't really feel like writing a long winded thing here because it was the release show for a band that I play in. We made a split tape. We played some songs from it. All the bands were amazing. The venue was great. The turnout was excellent and the people were positive. Foxmoulder even played a brand new song that I caught on video and posted below. Enjoy.
Busy with interviews. Some upcoming ones include Amygdala, Neil Perry/Joshua Fit For Battle/Hot Cross/The Now, Saetia/Off Minor and Funeral Diner. The new mix rocks. There are two shows that my band is playing that are off the fucking chain:
***Interviews/Live shows coming up this month for sure:
- Amygdala interview - The World That Summer release show w/Foxmoulder/Terry Green/Sarin - Lentic Waters / Locktender / La Luna / Respire / The World That Summer show review - Gillian Carter / Respire / Hammerhands / The World That Summer / Space Case show review
As always, on or around the 1st of every month, I will be posting a ZIP file with songs for the upcoming month with ALL specifics deleted from the tags, so unless you already know the band, there is NO information regarding each track.
During the following month, I will post reviews for those bands and link the tracks to the review so you can associate the two together. This way you can listen to a new song/band and have little-to-no bias. Below, I have re-posted the May mp3 mix that is used for this month's reviews.
The new OMSB mp3 Mix #6 houses 11 songs in about 36 minutes so don't expect any 8+ minute songs, these are all bangers, including:
*-* an unreleased post-punk/grunge/hardcore song that'll be premiered in June
*-* one of the earliest emo bands that is much more akin to Funeral Diner but preceeds even Sleepytime Trio
*-* some extremely sexy Canadian mathy screamo with ties to Foxmoulder
*-* a late 90s/early 00s emo band with strong similarities to Bright Calm Blue and Indian Summer
*-* a band with a vocalist that sounds eerily similar to Anthony Green
Any bands/labels that are interested in having their stuff reviewed, please email zegemabeachrecords@gmail.com: with "Open Mind Saturated Brain" as the subject. Please keep in mind that I don't review everything, just what jives with the blog. I will, however, listen to everything you send me. I would recommend emailing with an idea for a song/album premiere 2 months prior to that song/album release date for a much stronger chance at being reviewed on this blog. Bands that have already had their discography reviewed can also submit new albums for review if they include song/album premieres.

LUCERTULAS played unruly, abrasive and noisy post-punk from Venice, Italy. They currently still play but have shed the noisy sass of their first two records in exchange for a cleaner, more melodic approach. 2007's 'Travol de Rova' is a notable debut with spastic and eerie layers of both noise and rock. Tracks such as "Roulette" and "Partum" are good examples of a sassy Rye Coalition and Meth And Goats rock/post-punk style, but it isn't a consistent record.
It wasn't until 'The Brawl' was released that they truly reached their potential. This LP has amazing art and boasts incredible tracks throughout the disc, reminding me a lot of Hercules Hercules crossed with At The Drive In including some angular riffing not unlike The Paper Chase. The guitars are truly unique and weird but when coupled with the pulsating and distorted bass they tend to ultimately be the driving force behind the band's sound, although the drums and their rhythmic, jungle vibe catapult this sound into bombastic territory. The screaming/yelling is not to be glossed over, as the exceptionally shrill and peaked vocal tirades similar to The Blood Brothers and At The Drive In are a huge selling point for the first two releases. The following songs are fantastic: "8 Hours" (my personal fave by the band), "A Wicked Eel" (awesome, spazzy stuff), "The Boxer" (with its piercing, angular attack), "Carlo's Nightmare" (goes all over the place) and "The Widower" (an epic 6+ minute closer).
The new material from 2014's 'Anatomyak' sounds like Forstella Ford (especially the grainy singing on "A Good Father") and manages to still keep the instrumental edge sharp, but the lack of fuzzed out and sassy vocals detract from the killer sound I was used to. The top song on here is "The Sailor" which is kind of like Akimbo, These Arms Are Snakes and even a little Brighter Arrows.
A very original band, LUCERTULAS is well worth your time, especially those first two rockin' records.
