*** NERVEWRECKER exclusive song premiere ***

NERVEWRECKER
"Not My Depression"
exclusive song premiere

For fans of: Social Caterpillar, Manchester Orchestra, and Two Gallants

Bandcamp (goes live Nov 13th)

The disbanding of Social Caterpillar left me gutted, but in just about a year since their burial we've got a members new band NERVEWRECKER and their debut single...which I just happen to premiering here today! Here's a bit of history from Kyle (Social Caterpillar, Scowler):

"Nervewrecker started about two years ago as a two piece. Brian and I started writing a batch of songs and shortly after we added Pedro on keys. After fine tuning the songs we went up to a cabin on a lake in wild rose Wisconsin to record with our friend, John Larkin. We were able to have Eric and Eli from Social Caterpillar record violin and bass on the album and Adam added synth and tambourine. "Not My Depression" was the first song we wrote and it seemed like a good first representation of the band to share. "Not My Depression" is a bit of a North Star kinda song. When things are bleak look toward the people you love and who love you. The album is dedicated to our friends, family, and to anyone that relates to the music. We hope people enjoy the songs as much as we enjoyed creating them."

'Cutting Down My Dreams That Swing From Rope' releases in full on November 13th digitally and by way of cassette thanks to the band. The record was mixed by Greg Norman and mastered by Carl Saff. Single below!

(2026) NERVEWRECKER "Not My Depression" (from 'Cutting Down My Dreams That Swing From Rope')

Clocking in at 5:22, this emotional beast begins with viola and guitar before the whispered vocals and crawling drums join the march. The songs shifts into what sounds almost like minimal posty southern noise with a lullaby over top, which is most definitely a genre, and builds upon itself with a slightly faster pace, the inclusion of keys, and distorted/crunchy guitars. By the three-minute mark the song has seemingly reached its peak, and as we stand at the top in the awe NERVEWRECKER quickly pushes you down the opposing side for a dense and gorgeous ride back down to safety.

SOMETHING TO REMEMBER
"The Day"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of
: Orchid, Francis Brady, Lachance, and Towers

orders open October 31st, 2026 via Tomb Tree

In early 2026 one of the bands I played in (Mourn Recif) had a show and SOMETHING TO REMEMBER played. It was their second show and I was immediately blown away and definitely floated a Mourn/Something To Remember split idea. Today I'm stoked to present their first single "The Day" from the Vancouver emo-violence/metallic hardcore four-piece. Sounding akin to early 2000s German screamo, their epic, driving, dark, even dancey first set of songs are as passionate as they are wicked. I've chosen a short, punchy jam as the single, although I must say the album opener "Evening Redness In The West" is my favourite track. Listen to "The Day" below...it'll only take 42 seconds!!!

*** TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN exclusive song premiere ***

TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN
"1"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of
: Shesmadefromsuede, Orchid, Mondrary and Grimlitter

orders open October 23rd, 2026

Almost a year or so ago my friend Kyle from Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead messaged me saying they'd seen a new band's first show that night, it was amazing, and that I should probably get them on my radar. Thank you Kyle!!! Nearly a year later we are on the precipice of releasing the Vancouver four-piece's debut five-song self-titled EP and I'm here to give you the band's first official single and a live video of said single! Cassettes and tapes release on Zegema Beach Records on October 23rd, 2026. They've got a show in Victoria on October 17th and should hopefully at least have their tapes to sling a week early, so pull up...unless you have firefighter training in Otter Valley then you might need to miss the show :(

(2026) TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN "1" (from 'Taking Tiger Mountain')

Coming in at 1:11, this song wastes no time getting into it with a plethora of time signature changes and stop/starts in the first 10 seconds before dual vocals kick in. By the 30-second mark the song has done a ton of legwork, and takes a half-second breather before going full tilt once again before settling briefly into a breakdown that Senza would be proud of and a final whirlwind conclusion. So much in just over a minute...goddamn!!!

*** BOON exclusive song premiere ***

BOON
"Luck"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of: Old Soul, Deafheaven, and Blue Noise

When my friend Van Shanahan hit me up in early 2025 to show me their new band's debut EP. I got through like 45 seconds and found myself on the floor because holy shit dude (review of it here). So now it's a year-and-a-half later and the band is back with a new EP but this time I got my foot in the door nice and early. The band's new three-song EP 'Offer Your Arm' releases on October 13th, 2026 on cassette via Tomb Tree and also includes the first incredible EP 'Thief' on the b-side. Check out the single below, which is incredibly dense and compact, while the other two new songs are much more epic, adventure-filled, and atmospheric evolves from gorgeous passages to utter annihilation (and are more than three times the length!).

     Zach had this to say:

"I typically like to write songs with a big emphasis on dynamic contrast and unpredictable structure, so this one was a bit of a departure in its straightforwardness. It’s fast, loud, and unrelentingly bright. Although largely dominated by the rhythm section, there is some intricate guitar work to be found if you’re willing to dig through the noise."

(2026) BOON "Luck" (from 'Offer Your Arm')

"Luck" is an interesting mixture of screamo and black metal slathered in shoegaze but with zero slowdowns. In just 2:05 the song rips through about six sections of washed out guitars played at breakneck speed, rabidly wild vocals, and a flurry of bass and drums. The track gushes positivity and a triumphant conclusion to an EP that is otherwise quite bleak and dark (in the best way though).

*** SHOULDERED exclusive song premiere ***

"Scarecrow"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of
: Manchester Orchestra, Social Caterpillar, and Medications

I love me some Derek Allen, so when he asked me to premiere a new jam from a new band it was an automatic yes. This new project shows Derek (Lower Automation), Wade, and Nic (Frail Body) dipping into much calmer and accessible waters, ditching the chaos and unpredictability of their earlier bands. The EP straddles slowcore, post-hardcore, and shoegaze like they've been doing it for a decade, which kinda makes sense considering the members' past bands. Speaking of past bands, Derek's gorgeous clean singing has the occasional push from backing vocals, really removing him from the anxious yelps that escaped his lips in Lower Automaion while the instrumentation has lots of room to breathe but when everything hits that room is on fucking fire.

The five-song 'Lapse' releases October 1st, 2026 on bandcamp and streaming with physical copies being available on the former. Drums and bass recorded at Electrical Audio in June 2026 by Lauren MacDonald while guitars and vocals were recorded by Derek Allen, and the entire thing was mastered by Nick Stetina.

The band has a few upcoming shows that you should definitely attend if geographically viable:

9/25 - Davey's Bagels, Fort Wayne, IN
9/26 - Sanctuary, Detroit, MI
9/27 - The Run Off, Kalamazoo, MI
10/10 - EP release show at Empty Bliss, Chicago, IL

A few words from Nic about "Scarecrow":
"This song has been floating around in my head for years, but I never felt like I had the right project to bring it to life until Derek, Wade and I started Shouldered. Hearing a recorded version of it after all of this time has been really rewarding. It’s probably my favorite song to play live so far, and a good indication of the direction we want to take the band."

поступь

Band: поступь
For fans of: Aspergers, June Paik, Minaret, Black Nail, Lucidity, Cady, and Anodyne.
Genres: Punk / Hardcore / Metalcore / Metallic Hardcore / Screamo / Skramz / Emo-violence / Black Metal
Related artists: ?.
Country: Saratov RUSSIA
Years Active: 2025-present
Label(s): Emiva Records

Sometimes I randomly come across something in my music folder that has snuck in there and has been hiding ever since. I recently uncovered one of these in my 2025 folder (yeah it was mid-2026 by this time) and it fucking floored me. I then checked out the band again for this review to see they have published a new two-song banger in 2026. Fuck yes.

поступь are a four-piece from Saratov in Russia and play a dark, intense, and violent form of screamo not unlike Lucidity, Cady, and June Paik. It's fast, technical, and moody, making the experience that much more immersive. On their debut EP 'лица' they weave between crushing moments and softer subterranean sections, with a perfect example being opener "(не) любовь". Next is "кем ты стал?" which is a dancier version of the band that still comes in bathed in vitriol (and panic chords). My personal fave is "правда" which is an absolute beast and incorporates the biggest of the band's breakdowns amidst a flurry of panic chords and wicked stop/starts. I love the opening of the song as well, as the tremello guitar builds on itself using slight alterations placed with unique timing - it's kind of Aspergers light.

The 2026 EP 'юдоль' is just two songs and although they go hard, they don't quite reach the level of the aforementioned banger "правда". The first track "опухоль (feat. ГРИН)" sees the band moving slightly more into the hardcore direction, but once the 45-second mark hits the breakdown everything falls into place and I get it. Awesome track. The second track "всё пройдёт" begins like a post-hardcore track with some nice guitar and screamed vocals before delving directly back into German-sounding emo-violence. Fuck to the yes.

Very stoked to hear what comes next from this band!

*** WELLNESS exclusive song premiere ***

WELLNESS
"Countering"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of: Moments Of Being, Crowning and Ghola

cd/cassette/12" pre-order full release September 18th via Third House

Started in 2025, this band features members that have spent time in some incredible projects including Heavenly Blue, Kayo Dot, Liturgy, and Massa Nera. WELLNESS has their first seven-song, self-titled album releasing next week on Third House via cassettes, cds, and vinyl. I've got the honor of premiering their single "Countering" right now. Aeryn had the following to say about it.

"A lil about the context of the song - The lyrics are my own take on a protest song and finding the will to continue to fight back capitalist systems of oppression. We all deal with misinformation online, polarizing culture war bullshit/leftist infighting, and state violence that punishes people for speaking out...all while we're exhausted from work. But action has to happen regardless because ICE is abducting our neighbors off the street and our planet is being heated so rapidly that it will kill/displace even more people, and destroy agriculture and ecosystems that sustain life as we know it. We have to reach into ourselves and find what drives our own motivations and empathy for fighting back the system and accepting our own personal capacity to do so. We should also reach out to our communities to give/receive help because together we're stronger and we can start building the world we want to live in."

(2026) WELLNESS "Countering" (from 'Wellness')
https://youtu.be/Lh-Z5hQd2Ho

This song is just 1:38 in length but holy shit it goes places. The stop/start instrumentals paired with anguished screams open the song and lead to some mathy/noodly goodness before diving into the deep end. By the one-minute mark the song has already run a few circles around the listener, mixing melody, drive, and screaming into a lip-smacking screamo soup - but those final six seconds are fucking catastrophic. Good lord that's some yummy stuff.

COUNTERING (lyrics):
Separated by false pretenses, a blur of misinformation. Worn bodies - mechanisms for labor, scraping by, rusting away. Tearing away, tearing away, tearing away our time. Tearing away, tearing away, tearing away our time, our lives. Smoke gets in your eyes: burning blue, shattered glass. Smoke gets in your lungs: gasoline scented air. Smoke gets in your teeth: broken bones, swollen tongues. Smoke gets in your lungs: chemicals cloud the air. Reach inward. Reach outward. Dismantle violent systems and take back our lives.

*** VALATIE exclusive song premiere ***

VALATIE
"Deafinitely"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of: Ambretta, Burial Etiquette and Aspertame

I was quite taken with the debut VALATIE album 'Dragged Through the Garden' that released back in 2025. The Chicago, Illinois six-piece is comprised of members have spent time in Indisposed, Excrucis, Sawamura No Hitter, Antillion, and Mira Corpora, so it's obvious this will be quite the treat. Their sophomore album 'echolalia' hits the streets on August 21st via Oliver Glenn Records by way of 70 cassettes. Today I'm premiering the 6th of 8 tracks titled 'Deafinitely' and Dylan from the band had the following to say about it:

"'Deafinitely' is a song we put together toward the end of the writing cycle. It was kind of pieced together out of a few separate ideas. It’s one of the more ‘high contrast’ songs we put together for this record, with the zany sass intro that leads into the waltzy, melodic second half. The lyrics mostly examine this metaphor of authoritarian American politicians ‘driving the country’ recklessly like a car. We fooled around with a few different arrangements for the opening section and eventually settled on the big, all screaming format that definitely feels like one of the punchiest moments on the album, in my opinion."

(2026) VALATIE "Deafinitely" (from 'echolalia')

The song opens going full speed with a dirty and pummeling intro that boasts multiple vocalists, breakdowns, and some quirky guitar progressions. Just before the one-minute mark the song shifts its weight and settles on back-and-forth post-hardcore with some gorgeous clean vocals that lead it to a tipping point between melody and math that begins to resolve around 1:50 as it fades out and creeps back in with a dark groove. Love those harmonics and spoken word.

The band is going on tour next week so check it out if you're in the area!!!

HORSE FUNERAL
"Sazerac Drinker"
exclusive album/song premiere
For fans of: Usurp Synapse, Missouri Executive Order 44, Aim Of Conrad and Lower Automation

Bandcamp
(becomes active upon its July 31st release)

HORSE FUNERAL are a math/sass band operating out Little Rock, Arkansas. Their email was the first I've heard of them but when they cited: Usurp Synapse, Febuary, .GIF From God, Terry Green, Euclid C Finder, Nerver, Antioch Arrow, The Locust, and generally from the 90's San Diego scene, Gravity Records, and 31G as influences I immediately dug in whilst salivating.

I was tempted to premiere "Casket City" because it's the best track, but as it is partially already out there in various promo videos I'll stick with penultimate track "Sazerac Drinker", which leans a bit more to the screamo side while the former mixed in a lot of noise rock ala fellow Illinoisians Lower Automation. This track is fire and the mixture of drunken sassy rambling alongside piercing screams is awesome. They 've already booked a two day run in August, and are planning on touring further afteward. The debut record release show is planned for July 31st with tapes coming from texasheartusa and cds from Vamonos Records.

A few choice things discussed: skate punk, everything after page 98, band t-shirts are the best introductions, Paul makes me upset, creating/running Perpetual Motion Machine and playing in Operation Latte Thunder, Sweat Lodge and Wilderness Medicine, the screamo dead years, a top five best word, Dark Days Bright Nights festival, etc. Bands played in this podcast: Assfactor 4, Ecorche, Heiße, Planesmistakenforstars, and Torches To Rome. photo by @psyop_snaps

Goddamn I've known Gus for about a decade at this point, and with OSTRACA playing ZBR Fest 2026 and then releasing a new full length the next month, this podcast was a no-brainer. I had spoken with Gus, Brian, and John as a full band back in 2017 (video interview linked here) but I wanted to pick his brain, specifically. You can check out a podcast that I did with drummer John by clicking on this text. Some things we touched on: Weird Al and our favourite UHF scenes, at time when Gus could not be outskanked, Gus' Red Hot Chilli Peppers cover band, a fallow period for the screamo genre, the June Paik effect, Black Metal and Medieval Associations 101, "big" vs. "meaningful", the Zach Hill school of drumming, the lowdown on 'Thread', recording and songs that aren't meant to be played live, album release show, remember Horny Al?, etc. Bands played in this podcast: A Recorded Dawn, Gregor Samsa, I.O., Mercy Necromancy, Peter Rehberg feat. Dennis Cooper, and Sangre De Muerdago. Listen to podcast #198 which is available to stream and/or download for free via this link.

@Brass Monkey in Victoria on June 13th, 2026

Live Show Review

A few years back I did a podcast with Hamilton's CONSTRAIN (linked here) who took the local scene (one which I used to be a part of) by storm. Their emotionally charged live show is fucking intense, their breakdowns are nuts, and the intricacy/tightness of it all puts them in a league of their own. During said podcast I told them that I had just started a new band on Vancouver Island and that they should come play with us sometime. That time was this past weekend, June 11th (in Vancouver, but I did not attend) June 12th (in Duncan) and June 13th (in Victoria). It was a very expensive trip for them so if you want to support the homies please check them out when they play and pick up some killer merch from them (or grab stuff online here). Shoutout Matty.

Good lord these dudes came out and brought their A game! Mixing sassy metalcore with vicious hardcore, the end result is a highly potent and highly flammable that explodes during their live show. Awesome dudes too? You betcha. New EP coming this summer!!! I still can't believe Jesse is alive I thought he was going to bail hard off that table at Brass Monkey.

LAKESIDE AMUSEMENT PARK
This Kelowna BC band was touring with Constrain and after their Vancouver show the vocalist/bassist Jade got sick and had to go home, so the band came with a fill-in bassist (the same that helped Constrain on tour!) and then Phoebe (guitar) and Matty (fill-in bass) did vocals on top. I gotta say I wouldn't have known they were missing a member as they sounded sick. Freyja from Coup D'etat also joined on vocals for a few songs on the Victoria date.

These were supposed to be the final Mourn Recif shows but it didn't work out that way, which may have turned out for the best as each night I was told by different people that our set was the best they'd seen from us. Hot damn. We recorded the six songs we played both nights back in May so they will release on a 12" sometime this fall/early winter on Zegema Beach.

CSILLA'S STAR IS GONE
This local band is still very new but boasts members from a ton of sick Victoria bands including Coup D'etat, A Recorded Dawn, Wollruss, Bathtub Autopsy, etc. Their sets are always fast with almost no talking, just extremely vivid recollections played through an audio sample of people witnessing atrocities at farms and what I will just call death centers. This was the best set I've seen from them yet.

*** PODCAST #197 ZBR Fest 2026 recap ***

I sat down with my buoys Josh and Nima. We all play in Wollruss together and like listening to the new Ostraca album before its release. Josh spends his time playing in so many band it'd be stupid if they weren't all amazing, like A Recorded Dawn and Csilla's Star Is Gone. Oh also Cadere. Oh oh, and that unnamed metalcore project. Nima spends most of his time on Hillsboro but his recent indoctrination to screamo is now complete. We talked about every band (at least once): Csilla's Star Is Gone, Wollruss, Clay Birds, Carrion Spring, Othiel, Treewell, Terrifying Girl's High School, Cadere (ex-Mourn Recif), Coup D'etat, Fingerswoventogether, Serrate, Emma Goldman, Mage Tears, Mieke, Nuvolascura, Ostraca, Hillsboro, Jisei, A Recorded Dawn, Mau, The Names Of Our Friends, Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead, Hetta, Wallflower, Crossed, and The Caution Children. Besides every band that played, A few additional things discussed: dead cats, rollerskating at the screamo show, exploding heads, Red Gate the Hospital, Dave fights an SG (and loses), Yes I want to feed the goats, 2026: The Year of Spirit Fingers, Handshake of the Year Award, rolling ankles, Top 5 Screamo Songs of the last 10 years, weed puffer magic, etc. Bands played in this podcast: Fingerswoventogether, Othiel, and Treewell.
