With the resurgence of metallic screamo comes a bunch of semi-decent stuff, but only a few manage to rise above the rest, and NUKESOVERLASTSUMMER is most certainly one of those bands. Releasing a single self-titled EP in 2024, their five songs (one of which is of a different style) lean in the chunky, venomously spat, anxiety-inducing, dark, menacing direction with the most notable comparisons being early WristMeetRazor, Kiowa, and Black Nail. I also found the story of the band to be noteworthy also, as the two-piece studio project wrote and recorded the entire EP in just three days, with most of the vocals being done in a single take.

'nukesoverlastsummer' opens with "Anatomy of a Smear Campaign", a brooding and short introduction that serves its purpose, as it reveals but doesn't give the game away in its 2:06 runtime. Things get bumped up to the next level on "Whoever Gets to Shoot First Gets to Shoot Twice", which is drenched in panic chords, but holy fuck the nasty/massive breakdown that starts with a hand-clap is absolutely devastating. "Knife, Nails, & Teeth (Kiss the Ghost)" has mad Black Nail and Hallam Foe vibes, as it is full of huge bass drops, panic chords, and breakdowns. Following a crazy audio sample (from Gone Girl) to start the song "The trees grew because I died there" then goes directly for the jugular and comes away with a mouthful, as the chugging and dissonant - almost black-metal guitars and haunting vocals nearly dip into early Oathbreaker material. And that closing breakdown must've absolutely created pandemonium in a live setting. Closer "nukesoverlastsummer" is a somber acoustic number that gives you a bit of cool down time before the EP concludes.

In conclusion, this EP is amazing and had I heard it last year it would have cracked my best of list. So fucking good. More please.

*** PODCAST #182 Jon (Blue Youth, Bermuda Love, etc.) ***

After hearing Saskatchewan's BLUE YOUTH and their debut EP back in 2017 I've been straight up obsessed with this band. Initially pitched to me as a fan of North Of America, the three-piece ended up sounding closer to Life In Vacuum and Metz. After years of evolution (and a hiatus) the band returned in 2025 with their sophomore 12"LP 'Defeatist'. So it was high time to get bassist and friend Jon Wolfond on this podcast. Some things discussed: botching intros, Weird Al be poppin', being an absolute buffoon all the time, the greatness of Jim Ward, sounds like Dangers, perpetual search for "The Clickables", incestuous scenes are the best, Dave's memory crashes and burns, flaunting errors, an album or a collection of singles?, crushing little boys' dreams, being particular with shoegaze, what's next, etc. Bands played in this podcast: Higher Rites, Ken Mode, Leavs, Metz, Preoccupations, and Van Johnson. Listen to podcast #182 which is available to stream and/or download for free via this link.

*** CARRION SPRING exclusive song premiere ***

"You Feel Like a Dickhead"
exclusive song premiere
For fans of
ShoganaiKidcrash and Crowning

It's been over a decade since I became enamored with CARRION SPRING and became friends with Adam Brock Ciresi. Since then we've lined up premieres, hung out at shows, done a podcast together, hell - they even created the Zegema Beach Records logo! So on the precipice of playing Cali Kicks fest and their album release later this summer/fall, I've got the first recording premiering right fucking now. Some words from Adam:

Our single, "You Feel Like a Dickhead," is from our forthcoming full length Those We've Lost and Continue to Lose. It was recorded at Atomic Garden Studios with Kurt Ballou (God City Studios, Converge, etc), and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. It is an album largely focused on the many different layers and aspects of grief, whether that is in the past, present, or future tense, regarding personal loss, communal loss, or global loss. Each song takes a different angle and perspective on this, with the same old radical sentiments that Carrion Spring has always incorporated. Some of it relates to 3 of the 4 members having all recently lost a parent in very traumatic ways, some relates to worldwide disasters from climate change, some relates to ongoing genocides by neo-colonial forces, along with other ways grief can be framed.

This single, You Feel Like a Dickhead, musically well represents a lot of the directions we took on this album- little bit of mathy song structure, a lot of angular guitar interplay, and heavy bass/drum fusing, which specifically, all the bass and drums were recorded live to try and achieve that last idea best as we could. We tried to lean into some more emotional grooves on this song, a metallic-eqsue breakdown, and even a little bit of d-beat near the end. The lyrics take on a couple of different meanings, but most aptly is about billionaires drowning- we wrote it at the time of the Oceangate submarine imploding. I remember reading about the owner's denial of the condition of the submarine, that there had been warnings the vessel would likely not withstand the pressures of the deep ocean. This concept branches out throughout the rest of the song, thinking about people who do the same with their own self image, where they may ignore any critical feedback from those around them, and continue to reiterate the same self-destructive behaviors, which inadvertently may even take down the people close to them as well, those who simply just trusted rhetoric that proved to be deceiving, baseless, and toxic in the end.

Carrion Spring heads down to San Francisco to play Cali Kicks Fest next week, along with a long list of other amazing screamo/screamo-adjacent bands, playing on the first day of the fest, June 14th.

*** PODCAST #181 Jeni (Magana, Pen Pin, etc.) ***

In 2024 I came across solo artist MAGANA and was instantly hooked. The gorgeous, honest, immersive, and unique folk/indie/witchy rock music has some crossover with Squirrel Flower but is really it's own amazing thing, and I just couldn't resist delving into her entire discography. With some upcoming joint endeavors between herself and Softseed Music I figured it was definitely time to bring her on and pick her brain about how one creates such amazing music. We discussed a whole lot more than that, including: bass for Mitski as a day job, not sucking at the clarinet, pushing Daitro, firing the whole band, learning polyphonic synth, seasonal releases, indescribable cheese, sparse but full, strings fuckin' hit, etc. Bands played in this podcast: Baton Rouge, Bok Suna, Flower Face, Le Pain, Slow Pulp, and Total Brutal. Listen to podcast #181 which is available to stream and/or download for free via this link.
