***AU BOUT DE MES LÈVRES / PIQUE / A PARAMOUNT, A LOVE SUPREME / WILD HEART split premiere***

AU BOUT DE MES LÈVRES / PIQUE A PARAMOUNT, A LOVE SURPEME / WILD HEART
'4-way split'
album premiere

A truly sensational 4-way split from Larry Records, Missed Out Records, Callous Records, Le Blast Records and Les Disques Rabat-Joie was released today with four incredible bands. The album comes on a ton of variants, including 10" lathe cuts, different label tape variants as well as one version housed in a coffin! Very cool.

The songs? The AU BOUT DE MES LÈVRES takes their Daitro worship to the next level, creating a lush yet paranoid French screamo experience. PIQUE use a humorous song title to mask their greatest achievement thus far with a heaving first 66% and groovin' final third. A PARAMOUNT, A LOVE SUPREME is next and is easily one of my favourite active bands, and they sure as hell do not disappoint, utilizing their epic, balanced attack not unlike Ostraca to completely immerse the listener in amazingness...it even includes a violin! Closing band WILD HEART are the only band to drop the deuce, and do so in late 90/early 2000s screamo fashion, thus concluding one helluva split.

Are you a member of Twin Cities Screamo on that shitfactory called facebook? Well goddamn that community has the best, most obscure, most active and most straightforward screamo posts, and it's where I found out about RESI NOTH from Florida. Their dark, abrasive and unsettling take on screamo reminds me most of Ruhaeda, one of the most overlooked bands of the genre from the early 2000s.

The band seemed to be kicking around from 2006 to early 2012 or so and released just a four-song split, an LP and an unreleased track. The 'Manatee split' was the band's first release and is very sick as well as very screamo. Opening with "Last Days", the snare is prominent and driving, with an excellent, destructive transition at 45 seconds and a very Neil Perry conclusion at the one-minute mark. "Plague Gods" is next and plays it out a bit longer, with a slightly slower section and incredible climax as well as a sick title. "Jeremy" has the band going all-out for the first 1:23 in epic German emo-violence fashion and closer "Crouching Tiger Hidden Fuck Off" is not only hilariously titled but a fucking banger that brings to mind Tunes For Bears To Dance To and Robots Don't Cry. Seriously that's a sick release that I can't believe I hadn't heard.

Their 2011 cdr full length 'Resi Noth' is even darker, leaving some of the screamo. "Lost Days" is the opener and has incredible drumming that'll have you spinning, and that Swan Of Tuonela-esque second-half is exceptional. Perhaps my favourite RESI NOTH song is next, "Coma Berenices", a 4:48 travel through hell on lightspeed drums. There's a sick, haunting, section that starts around 1:40 that acts a trippy break from the cacophony of its two bookends. "Into Triangle",  and "It's a Mirage" are short, effective bursts, "Aokigahara", "Flee to the Deserts" and "The Color Of The Variable Out" (with it's terrifying wolf howl) are slightly longer but very engaging, but "Wailing Walls Of Miami-Beach People" and closer "Feral (Instrumental) are overly long and bloated (despite the former's great ending). From what I can only assume is the same session came "栄光の架け橋 aka Bridge of Glory" as digital "unreleased song" on the band's Bandcamp as their sole release. It's 5:27 in length and would have been a fitting/proper closer on the LP, but alas fans were forced to wait six years for its release.

***PODCAST #39 - A few weeks w/Tom McCone***

From August until December 2017 I lived in New Zealand. Whilst there I helped create a band with a few Dunedin folks that wanted to play screamo. Tom and I did a podcast while I was there. Then I fucking peaced, lol. In early February 2020 my good friend Tom McCone traveled to the great white north with his partner Bethany and they stayed with us for just over two weeks. It was awesome. I'm still in Tom withdrawal as they have been gone for almost a week now and I miss having someone amazing to talk to in the basement while doing music stuff. Luckily, we did this podcast one of the first few days he was here, and we'll do a third one in May before he heads back to New Zealand. Podcast #39 is available to stream and/or download for free via this link.

THE WIND IN THE TREES are an incredible three-piece mathy, experimental hardcore/metal band from Baltimore. They released their debut LP 'a gift of bricks from the sky' in 2019 on Middle Man Records to much acclaim, especially within the mathcore community. The album consists of 13 blows to the head, complete with chaotic pummelings and post-concussion mind-fuckery just to make sure you don't forget about it the next day. Drawing comparisons is difficult in an Indiana-Jones-treasure-switcheroo kind of way, but a general sweep of relatively similar bands would find parts of Frontierer, Euclic C Finder, Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza, Discordance Axis and Daughters, which is some pretty ridiculous company.

Following a haunting introduction with "Fever dream", "Sleepwalking into a burning house" then runs a condensed marathon on your goddamn face. The instrumental transition at 50 seconds is a nice slowdown that creates a massive, swelling midsection that tips just before 1:30. This is followed by "Death walks beside you", an absolutely brain-shattering slice of grindy, mathy, screechy mayhem. "A smile unfurls" blows me away at the 50-second mark with a spectacular climax that would probably ruin my life if I saw it live. "I become darkness" is stellar, as well as "I become the end" and its ridiculous late 80s computer lazerbeam sounds that fire across the one-minute mark that I can't get enough of, and also make the Frontierer comparison pretty darn obvious. "Hellhoud" has a mindtrip of a riff for it's final third, again very Frontierer and Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravangza. Closer and one might argue long track "Blinding miscalculations" passes the three-minute mark and delves into new territory. Specifically, the very anthemic and engaging guitars as the first minute concludes, which lead the song through to its very epic and satisfying end.

I saw somewhere that the trio is working on new material, so I'm fucking stoked.

It's Family Day over here in Canada, so I thought it would be fitting to premiere the very anticipated REPUBLIC OF DREAMS / ALLES BRENNT release on said day. Why? Because Lars is family. Lars (ROD) and Sabine (PATH) are wonderful people. Their hospitality is endless. The vegan cooking unparalleled. And there's just something indescribable about watching my son and their kids interact. Sven and Jan (ROD) are also amazing folk who make truly remarkable music. There's a million more things I could type, but that's enough for now. Here's some fucking fire.

(2019) REPUBLIC OF DREAMS / ALLES BRENNT 'split'
Who's been waiting forever for new Dreams Warriors? This guy. And you too, I'd imagine. Well, REPUBLIC OF DREAMS is back with five new jams that'll have you shredded and perplexed, all whilst simultaneously chillin' on cloud nine. Halfway through opener "from rubble to bubble to bust" there's a few isolated drum solos before the apocalypse hits and reminds us all that ROD is GOAT. That's right, Goatrod. "turning flesh into metal" probably has the darkest vocals the band has on record, "the altruistic hypocrisy of watching someone drown" gives the feeling of falling off of a skyscraper and the subsequent fall, "a slew of slogans" buzzes around for a bit before attacking and closer "never again" is a clip of Paul Celan reading his poem "die todesfuge" which he wrote as an attempt to deal with the holocaust.

The band had this to say about the clip:
"we know it is controversial around some topics but it is really shaking and intense and we felt it is soo important these days as facism / nazism is on the rise in germany / worldwide again that we wanted to put it on the record as well ... there will be explanations and more info about it with the record. if anyone is interested - you can always contact us..."

ALLES BRENNT are from Versmold and are new to me as well as downright excellent. The late 90s/early 2000s German hardcore meets Orchid hybrid should be up any screamo enthusiast's alley. Instrumentally the band can be compared to Orchid, Louise Cyphre and Arsen but vocally it's much darker and crustier bringing to mind Circle Takes The Square and Yung Nat$. Opener "hellhounds" will give you a shot from the get-go, but it's the closer "coercive power" that goes the hardest.

"Dave, have you finished your Best of 2019 yet?"

"Ha, please rephrase the question."

"Dave, have you started your Best of 2019 yet?"

"Ha, no. But you can bet your ass SOMN'll be on that goddamned list. Cuz...y'know...holy shit."

Yeah I could end it there, but I'll say a few words about the four songs on 'The All-devouring'. Opener "Sightless" weighs in at over 10 minutes of massive, swelling and all-encompassing post-everything mixed in a bowl of atmospheric black metal. Things get otherworldly for the first time at around 2:30 when the drums hit lightspeed, pretty Fall Of Efrafa-y thereafter and a wonderful mixture of An Autumn Of Crippled Children and Blue Noise (aka lush/epic screamo/black-metal) during the final quarter. "Awe" is the shortest song on here and goes full-tilt from the get-go, hitting a gorgeously dangerous groove at around the two-minute mark which doesn't let up for the rest of the track. "Tempest" has an infectious guitar progression and maniacal shrieking that is very reminiscent of Hope Drone...so therefore I love this track, just like the entire EP. But it's the closer and title track "The All-devouring" that reigns supreme on this one. It's unrelenting, insidious, dark and apocalyptic in both sound and delivery. The entire album climaxes at about the 7-minute mark, creating an ethereal, hypnotic and crushing conclusion.

I don't know what the band is up to next, but I'm beyond smitten. This is amazing.

Review by: TARQUIN JONES

Hey there. Do you miss and long for the nostalgia of the Myspace era? Do you often think about angsty usernames, killer profile songs, top 8 friend lists and skinny jeans coupled with white belts? Look no further and allow me to introduce you to the band GEISTERFAHRER! They are not only influenced by the roots of the Myspace underground music period, but they are also carrying the torch into the next decade with a strong progression on this unique moment in time.

GEISTERFAHRER is a devastating three-piece band from Boston, Massachusetts. Overall their sound can be described as a hybrid of death metal infused math-grind with healthy doses of offbeat chaos. The band consists of Pete Dugdale on vocals, CJ Romeo on Guitar / Synth and Andre Forero on drums. The band's name is derived from the German term for 'wrong-way driver', which translated to English means 'ghost driver'. These individuals drive on busy highways on the wrong side of the road in a self-destructive manner and at times can also potentially inflict harm to other drivers. When it came time to choose a name for this project during their inception, Pete suggested 'GEISTERFAHRER'. This was a name he was intending to use for a failed screamo project and it struck a chord with the rest of the members. They all liked the unusual name and how this dangerous, terrifying and brutal occurrence of 'ghost drivers' relates conceptually to the destructive nature of the band. Thus GEISTERFAHRER was born.

The band's first offering of music is a single demo track for the song "Tips on Dating a Masochist (Asking 4 a Friend)" released in December 2017. The track has an overall rawness in its production style. This rough and edgy approach complements the violent and explosive nature of the track. The guitars hit with the utmost ferocity, the vocals are delivered in a volatile fashion and the drums pound the listener's ears into oblivion. One can hear the strong influence of death metal and math-grind shining throughout this monstrous offering. The band also injects some pummeling metallic breakdowns for added heaviness and sass influenced vocals amidst the catastrophic gutturals Pete delivers to create some much needed vocal diversity. I'd equate these 'sass' vocals to the likes of Alexis Marshall from Daughters and Robbie Smith from Heavy Heavy Low Low. Pete also cites Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance as one of his biggest influences on the sass infused vocal sections. The guttural moments of the track remind me of the tone and delivery of vocalists like Chris Fox from See You Next Tuesday, Frankie Palmeri from Emmure and Mitch Lucker from Suicide Silence. Pete also cites Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation, Chris "CJ" McMahon of Thy Art Is Murder and both Dan Watson and Dickie Allen of Infant Annihilator as massive influences for his heavier vocal inspirations. I can definitely hear those influences creeping into the mix. All in all, this track was aimed to be an introductory statement for the band. It helped to create some interest in the band and their upcoming plans regarding music as they prepared to drop their debut full length. I remember when I first saw the link to this song posted in a Facebook group. The band's name and 'FFO' description piqued my interest. When I clicked play, I was very impressed with the potential the band had on offer and was highly anticipating the arrival of new music.

The band would return with their debut, 'Demolition Fetish' which they released in July 2018. The entire album features 10 tracks and clocks in at around 25 minutes. The band tightened up the overall production on this release, whilst still retaining the raw aggression from the demo single. The entire release sounds absolutely furious and is definitely not for the faint of heart. Pete's vocals are savagely delivered and demand your full attention. He also employs some clever moments of 'sass' influenced vocals to create this unhinged vocal juxtaposition. The guitars on the album are played with a manic and destructive quality. The guitars weave from buzzsaw death metal type riffs, towards concussive laden breakdowns and frenzied chaotic assaults with seamless fashion. The drums lock all this down with technical precision and hard-hitting moments like a knockout punch to the face. Overall this album feels thick and filthy in the most brutal way possible. My personal standouts from the album are "Grave Pact: Judgement Chain!", "A Ship is Safest at It's Dock, but That Ain't What It's Meant For" and "Blood Prisoner". I'm especially fond of the disgustingly long and anguished scream Pete employs around the 1:24 mark in "A Ship is Safest at It's Dock, but That Ain't What It's Meant For". It's so unsettling and captures the vibe of this release perfectly. GEISTERFAHRER definitely struck a chord with 'Demolition Fetish' as it made waves within the underground community and garnered the band more attention from wider music audiences. The album would also see a limited run of 50 translucent green tapes, released via Pattern Recognition Records based out of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.

In late October of 2019, GEISTERFAHRER dropped their highly anticipated new release. This savage 5 track EP is entitled, 'Vivisection Parade'. The entire release is a frantic ride and clocks in at a blistering 7 minutes in total. On this material, the band strays from their sassier moments from their debut and seems to embrace a lot more of their death metal influences. Never fear though, the band still ups the ante with healthy does of metallic breakdowns and chaotic passages featuring bursts of dissonance. The EP begins with a seamlessly relaxed and innocent introduction of hissing, static and garbled dialogue. This seems to evoke the quiet before the storm for the listener. True enough, the EP finally springs into gear once "Deadbridge Chant" kicks off. It's a truly dissonant and raging track. Pete sounds like a man possessed, while the band barrages your ears with raging walls of noise. Up next is "Queen Mab Rehab". The band pummels the listener to decimating effect with blasting drums, chugging guitars and Pete spitting bile on the mic. Finally, the track climaxes with a destructive whammy infused breakdown to beat one into further submission. Before you can catch your breath and gather one's bearings, the band kicks off into my personal standout from the EP. This is the violent and abrasive "Android Fitness" which features some of my favourite vocals. Pete sounds inhumane in the best way possible. Closing the EP is the solid "Social Media Werewolf". The track features some frenetic and chugging guitar work. It's a short and sweet onslaught of pure insanity. Believe me, when I say this you'll be hitting the replay button for another battering soon enough.

Pete has mentioned that the band is hard at work on a new full length and it will feature more of a shift in the overall type of vocal performances. Pete will be exploring the usage of harsh vocals like pig squeals and implementing even more types of guttural techniques to his already impressive vocal arsenal. I'm excited to hear how much more brutal and chaotic the band can possibly go moving forward. I'd also love to see some collaborations with other guest vocalists on some of the newer tracks. I could hear some cool vocal interplay with vocalists like Hunter from Sleepsculptor, Carson from The Callous Daoboys or Eeli from Fawn Limbs. There is just so much potential moving forward, it's quite exciting seeing what the band will deliver next.

So... if you love music that pushes the extremes, I highly recommend following GEISTERFAHRER right now! Their destructive journey into the underground music scene is just getting started.

First things first, TO BE GENTLE will be playing Zegema Beach Records Fest 2020!

Phew, now that that's outta the way I can actually focus on this review. I first heard California's TO BE GENTLE when Jake Beeker sent me their debut LP before it was released. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't something I revisited often. Then Jake sent me their new EP 'L'autre Côté de la Peur' a week or two before its release and I had was shocked at the progression, especially considering the band has only been around since December of 2017.

In April of 2018 the band released a digital single 'One Day We Will No Longer Hurt (Demo)' which later appeared on their LP, as do both songs "Tender Green" and "That Which Is Safe" on their 'thisisasummaryofwhoiam split'...so I'm just gonna jump to that. 'To Be Gentle' opens with an ambient introduction before "All the Things I Was Too Scared To Say" sets the tone of the record. It's moving, driving, melodic, atmospheric, emotional, and it does what it set out to do well. I find by the end of the LP that my attention is waning but I'm a picky piece of shit, and there are some excellent songs besides the second track including "Tender Green" (excellent, crunchy midsection), "Amputation" (great vocals), "That Which is Safe" (perfect balance of soft and screamy) and "The Hand That Rests On My Shoulder" (dark, groovy, with an important message). I think in the end it's just a tad too long and it lacks the punch I hear on the new EP. And that EP packs one helluva punch, so enough delaying, David.

'L'autre Côté de la Peur' is fucking amazing, plain and simple. After jamming the first track "Flesh and Blood, Bone and Dream" it is blatantly obvious that the band stepped up their game and beefed the shit out of their songwriting, as this thing has some seriously heavy elements not present in all material preceding. They start packing a punch at around 1:30 but by two minutes we are met with some seriously growly vocals that lead the track into its massive second half. At 2:53 there's a gorgeous transition and guitar lead swept in and out by the bass and drums, creating a truly mesmerizing climax to an incredible opener. Think that was good? Well fuck you here comes "If You Are Reading This", my essential TO BE GENTLE tune. This this is pretty hefty at 7:15, opting for a relatively quick, brooding intro not unlike Envy that eventually explodes like a bomb come 1:50. The dark, isolated and sinister feeling of the music is perfectly encapsulated by the next section, and shows up often as a intentional-or-not theme. During the third minute the bass and drums click on a level that is beyond explanation, and the song really hits its second peak by the four-minute mark. Think that's it? Ahahahaha fuck no. At 5:24 the guitar slides around before locking in with the bass and drums with scattered screams, reaching an ultimate climax at 6:39 that is beyond mammoth. Tracks three and four are pretty good, but pale in comparison to those sandwiching them. Closer and by far the most epic of any TO BE GENTLE song is "The Thought of Losing You Terrifies Me". This is led by an extended intro that bows out around 3:45 and makes way for rapid-fire drums and general chaos that somehow maintains its speed and intensity for nearly two minutes. At 5:30 we dip back into what I consider new/perfect TO BE GENTLE as the soothing, spacey guitar progression hooks cavernous bass riffs, thunderous drums and heart wrenching screams to create a new beast that is as beautiful as it is dangerous. There's also the vocal line that permeates through everything, "The though of losing you terrifies me!"

***VIENTRE music video premiere***

"Fronteras"
exclusive music video premiere

Bandcamp

VIENTRE have been making a name for themselves as of late, not just releasing music, but also touring and playing in multiple bands. The Cali, Colombia band asked me to premiere their new music video for their digital single "Fronteras" (which will show up on a summer EP of the same name), likely knowing that I would hop at the chance after reading this review. The video is a collection of footage from the band's 2019 U.S./Mexico tour and the song was recorded by Miguel Mendez, in Carne Débil studio. Let's get to it!

(2019) VIENTRE "Fronteras" official music video
The video begins with a shot from inside of an airplane above the clouds, marking the beginning of their tour. After the first ten seconds the song really leaps out and mashes with shot-after-shot of blended tour videos. The mixture of Spanish hardcore and French screamo and unmistakable, think Joliette meets Daitro and you're pretty much there. The song is littered with live footage, beautiful panoramic shots, chaotic bludgeoning as well as mesmerizing clean vocals and atmospheric passages. Shit, this has it all. Enjoy!!!
