I was first introduced to BETHARI when they sent me their new EP, 2017's self titled 'Bethari'. The eight songs don't even surpass seven minutes when all combined, so that should give you some direction on the sound. What is the sound? Wild, short, cathartic emo-violence, is what it is! Seriously this thing is so good, it was actually #17 on the OMSB Best Of 2017 post, and just barely got bumped out, by one spot, actually. Decent comparisons would be Textbook Traitors, Saligia and Улыбайся Ветру. Or anything with stellar, breakneck speed drumming!
"Participle" opens the record with an audio clip before two members cross screams amidst instrumental warfare and lets you know that rests for catching your breathe were never even considered. "Chronic" sounds a heck of a lot like Orchid (in an awesome way), "Mongoloid" includes more of those untamed and fierce dual vocals and "魔" is the album's crowning achievement and is reminiscent of America's Neil Perry and Poland's We Watch Clouds. "Tochi" and "Foundation" are both 30-something seconds and kick serious ass, with track six's "Rile" clocks in at a lightning 17 seconds. Closer "Bloodlets" is the only song over a minute, and it actually clocks in past two. The first minute is a fantastic mixture of Blue Friend and Sans Visage's Japanese screamo while the second is crushing in a Textbook Traitors kind of way. So many amazing name drops in that paragraph, wowza!
This is a debut EP, so dear lord of science I am ecstatic to hear what comes next.
