MAHRIA has been turning heads for the last few years now, especially after extensive Canadian and US touring. The band exudes beauty and darkness simultaneously, especially on songs such as "Sleep" and "Justification of an Old Man", which both combine multi-layered complex instrumentals that vary between dark/thick metallic-influenced hardcore and skramz with a screamy female vocalist and one of the best drummers I've seen in the last 5 years. The lyrics are poignant and relevant. They are energetic live. The people I've met in the band are inspiring and humble. The packaging, especially on the 'Mahria' 12"LP is made with love. They have a split 7" with The Sky Above And Earth Below coming out in a few short months, as well as a new LP that is the first to include their new guitarist Paul (who slayed alongside Mike in the band Rayleigh) and also includes their new bass player, Stacy. Their previous LP combines a fair amount of heavy material, while the new release sounds like it will be a mixture of dark and more European screamo clean riffing, which has got me salivating. How do I know these things? I interviewed Mike, the founding guitarist of MAHRIA, and he drops some seriously juicy details and intelligent answers regarding himself, the band's new and old material, Rayleigh, Canada, skramz vs. screamo, what he likes to cook and the drummer's favourite movies. 2 live videos from their show in Toronto with For Want Of are also posted with the interview. Enjoy!

***LA PARADE song premiere***

Did anyone notice that LA PARADE's "Lo Que Fui, Lo Que Soy" was on last month's OMSB Mp3 mix and was released before the album? 'Voces del Exilio' has since been released so watch the video below, stream the entire album here and then buy it here. This is a phenomenal debut album so do yourself a favour and check out a song or two, at least. For fans of melodic and screamy post-hardcore with stellar rock moments, you know, like Sed Non Satiata, Standstill, Milanku, (Satellite Years-era) Hopesfall and (early) Alexisonfire.

Check back tonight for the MAHRIA interview. Massive!

***NEW WINGS / BLACK LOVE / WATCH FOR WOLVES live show***

I only heard about this show about 2 weeks before it happened. I wasn't able to get anyone in Hamilton, besides myself, to attend the show. So there were about 25 people watching 3 bands play, and about 15 of those people were in bands. For shame, Hamilton. For shame. At least Door's Pub, the location, was a fantastic venue and everyone was super accommodating and nice. Big shout outs are in order to Graham and Caleb for bringing in great bands and letting me bring my distro crate. Gotta give the love first. Now, on to the review...

*WATCH FOR WOLVES*
WATCH FOR WOLVES started the night and were the only band I had really delved into regarding their music before attending the concert, so I'll list their live song titles, but won't for the last 2 bands below. Read the review I wrote here, as it pretty much explains their sound. To quickly summarize, this band from Montreal has only been together for about a year, but their debut EP 'Count It All In Joy' is already grasping successfully at emulating State Faults and The Sky Above And Earth Below while incorporating their own spin on it, aka passionate and melodic screamo with the occasional clean vocals. Grab their EP from the the bandcamp page or grab the physical copy of the cd in the Zegema Beach Records shop here.

"Jacob" (most of it)

*BLACK LOVE*
Next up was BLACK LOVE (also from Montreal) which is a very different kind of band and almost defies description. I don't really even know who to compare them to. The vocals are excellent, alternating between shrill yelling/screaming (Comadre, perhaps?) and almost Death By Stereo/Cursive/Bear vs. Shark-sounding melodic singing. The instrumentals are really cool and mash together numerous styles, including bands such as Russian Circles, Envy, Mono, Secret Smoker and These Arms Are Snakes with a heavy emphasis on melodies and twinkly parts. Check out the first song posted below for sure as it blew me away, although I did not film the first song they played live and it was fucking stellar. I cannot wait for their upcoming release that they will be recording soon!

*NEW WINGS*
To close the night NEW WINGS crooned through 4 songs (3 of which are embedded below) which really brought the room together. NEW WINGS shares members with Congratulations who are in turn associated with Life In Vacuum. This Ontario scene is getting pretty ridic. These guys played a peculiar but obviously effective set that consisted of a drummer, bassist, guitarist and keyboardist. The band leads with the keyboard as the atmospheric haze created by the rest of the band reminds me of later era Elliot. This doesn't always hold true, though, as they tend to move methodically from slow ambiance to fast, almost Hella-meets-Godspeed You! Black Emperor instrumental fuzz-rock. I don't believe the band has any physical releases left but they are currently in the studio tracking! Grab their stuff from the link below.

There's too much happening over too long an amount of time to try and go into detail. Basically ANGEL EYES combine screaming from the soul of multiple vocalists ala Back When and Buried Inside along with the huge builds of City Of Caterpillar as well as Envy and the spacey atmospherics of Mono. Seriously, why don't I hear more people dropping this band's name in conversations? The songs range from 4-17 minutes and generally have between 1 and 4 movements. I know what this is...this is Godspeed! You Black Emperor for screamo, post-hardcore and black-metal enthusiasts. Some readers are going to fall in love with this band, guaranteed.

If you are aching for another Dave Verellen, or just really miss Botch, or love Narrows, or perhaps all 3, just like me, then this is probably as close as you'll get. It is pretty difficult to sound this much like Mr. Verellen and have a band name so close to the name The Kin of Botch - it isn't an accident that the band plays mathy and pulverizing hardcore/metal. Vocals occasionally border on the sound of vocals shredding in a death-scream, just check "Cholera" and I'll say it again, holy Verellen batman. The instrumentals are generally less on the solo/ridiculousness side of Botch and (early) Norma Jean, but they do incorporate pretty much everything else. That being said, there are no soft, slow or breaks in the songs - this is a relentless and abrasive complete discography. Prepare to be pummeled.

Super screamy hardcore in the vein of 2000s bands such as Deers!, Cease Upon The Capitol, Loma Prieta and Danse Macabre. There's a lot of instrumental chaos, clean/jangly riffs, dual-vocal screaming with some really good spacey riffs and melodic breakdowns. Not to mention enough insane drumming to shake a stick at. Or two. Plus, feedback. Additionally, extra attention should be paid to this because Steve Roche from Permanent Hearing Damage recorded this, who was also in Saetia and Off Minor, to name his more influential bands. As far as I know the band broke up before releasing their final material on 10" or something so they released the final songs online. Regardless, download the discography below after checking the two embedded tracks.

LEER's new record is nearly impossible to categorize, but for simplicity's sake we'll go with super melodic/chaotic post-hardcore and jangly/mathy emo/screamo not unlike Hot Cross, Deers!, State Faults and Funeral Diner. There's also quite a few punk riffs thrown in for good measure. Wait, that's not short and it's definitely not a simple explanation. How's this, this was #4 on my top 20 LPs of 2013. That's simple. Check out the track on the right there ----->
and if you don't shit your pants don't even bother with any of the bands listed above, because screamo isn't your thing. 12XU, pronounced "One Two X U", are Baton Rouge 2.0...who were Daitro 2.0. So this is...Daitro 3.0? I don't even know. What I do know is this - 12XU sound exactly what Daitro and Randy would sound like if swapped out some members. Although I don't enjoy every song by the band, the songs that I do like are absolutely fantastic. Check out the embedded videos below to hear about half of them.

'On Largue Les Amarres' is my favourite release by the band, as it contains their strongest tracks. The plethora of material and styles used on this rock record include punk, garage, hardcore, folk, oi and a little bit of European screamo thrown in. Listen to the vocal part in "Terre D'Inconnus" from 0:45 to 1:03 - that is one of the best melodies I've ever heard, and it gets stuck blissfully in my head for days. The band always switches between 2 vocalists during the songs, with the higher pitched Daitro vocalist and the lower, gruffer...other guy who was probably in Daitro. Just for good measure...Daitro. Daitro.

'Les Grandes Marees' is a different beast, though. The band's only proper LP focuses on more coherent song structures and has more of a complete and thought-out feel. It also seems more rooted in rock, as opposed to punk. That being said, I like the gritty, bouncy and sometimes spastic rock of 'On Largue Les Amarres' much more. A note on 'On Largue Les Amarres', it is merely compilation of the band's out of print material from a 4x7" series, 2 splits and some random stuff. The last few songs are covers, one of which is Green Day's "Coming Clean". Eh...

Final verdict:  There's no clean singing here, just a couple of dudes yelling and screaming over jangly 90s emo/garage-rock instrumental jamz with a fucking "z". Tis good.

Story: DREAM CASTE was a weird band for me. I remember taking a first listen, being blown away and downloading the EP. I then went out my business (packing up records or cleaning up my cat's puke) and had the songs on as background music. After listens 2 and 3 I was like, eh...this isn't that good. After sitting my stupid ass down and properly listening to this again I came to the conclusion that, when on as background noise, the songs broadcast as a mash of sounds that don't lead anywhere and have weak vocals. When I paid proper attention to the EP I realized how well thought-out and powerful these songs can be. Tracks such as "Very Maximum Pain" and "Unyielding Spirit" perfectly mix the band's emo leanings (I'm uneducated in terms of band comparisons here, so listen and make your own comparisons) with spastic garage/screamo not unlike Aim Of Conrad, Transistor Transistor and The Holy Shroud. Considering this band boasts members from some reputable American emo/screamo bands as well as the founder of the KYEO Speaks record label, I shouldn't be surprised at the depth of this demo release. Besides the dual vocals, I love some of the progressions of the songs, as they don't play "obvious" music and have some surprising turns and interesting riffs. (see "Very Maximum Pain" from 1:07-1:55) At times the band must forget that they suffer from ADD and pull out a clean and groovin' riff, but generally they blast forward with non-stop aggressive songs that don't cross into heavy territory. Do yourself a favor and don't do a me, sit down with headphones and be slapped around by some gritty-yet-pretty music.

For fans ofHorse The Band, Ahleuchatistas, An Albatross, XBXRX, Polysics!, Jaguar Love,
The Advantage, Lord Snow, Ultra Dolphins and Piglet.

SNACK TRUCK was a random drums and guitar/keyboard screamy hardcore/grind/math rock find I grabbed about 10 years ago. It's fucking weird, but it's also really good if you have an open mind. Think An Albatross with a healthier dose of screamo/keyboard/math rock/stoner rock, but the vocals aren't as theatrical and overall the music is a little less...weird, but not by much. There's still a fair amount of synth, but it's utilized in a way that makes me actually enjoy it. P.S. I usually hate synths. Here's a few song breakdowns followed by the discography, 2 album downloads (the LP was ripped directly from my old record player 10 years ago) and 3 embedded tracks for your listening pleasure.

'Harpoon' LP
"Belgian Congo" sounds like An Albatross with ridiculous over the top muppets yelling during the verses and a pretty decent heavy screamy chorus. The instrumental entanglement at the 1-minute mark really does sound like what I would think the 2 words "Belgian" and "congo" would sound like if they could be put to music - and they have.

"Pheasant" follows a similar path with a weird-yet-hypnotic keyboards as the foundation. This song doesn't get the heavy, chaotic screamo treatment, but relies solely on the quirkiness and catchy-ass melody of the duo.

"Terrier of the Pale Moon" is my quintessential track, as the band perfectly mixes their weird synth-leanings with their distorted and discordant blast of screamy hardcore/noise rock.

"Big Dumb Guy" is another peculiar Polysics!-sounding jam but kicks it way better, in my opinion - as there
is some Advantage-style riffing and decent screaming using a distortion pedal ala Welcome The Plague Year.

"Peyote" is another high-pitched, distorted and wailing vocal track over some synths, slow drums, group chanting and the occasional solo lick.

'Spacial Findings' EP
"Second Level" is an amazing purely instrumental (and mostly without synths) mind-fuck. These songs on the 7" are like an epic Piglet mixed with Lord Snow.

My favourite, "Gravi-Thorn" expands on "Second Level" and almost cracks the 8-minute mark. This spacey, mathy, jazzy jaunt with distorted/feedback-laced guitars is the culmination of SNACK TRACK, without a doubt. Download and embedded songs below. Get on it.

Although this isn't a band that I spin regularly, chances are most readers have never heard of them and I'm sure a few people will end up downloading the songs I've posted. I found out about BURY ME STANDING after following the purchase of the Madeline Ferguson split about a decade ago after reading that Madeline Ferguson sounded like Neil Perry. Twasn't the most accurate comparison. However, and lucky for me, the other side of the split (or 2nd half of the cd, in this case) was pretty sweet.

BURY ME STANDING plays intelligent thrash/hardcore with some serious toying in the metallic screamo genre. If you like heavier You And I, old The Bled (it is the same vocalist, after all - but the newer guy) and Dispensing Of False Halos then I am certain you will be downloading this band's discography after listening to the embedded tracks below. I'll talk about my 4 favourite songs and then we're done.

"Colostomy Heart" from the Man Vs Humanity split melds You And I with Dispensing Of False Halos...basically metallic screamo, with more emphasis placed on the metallic part, which also borders on Owen Hart style thrash and crusty hardcore.

"Razorwire Highway to the Promised Land" again dabbles primarily is chaotic grind/hardcore with some interesting stop and starts near the end of the song and has a bit more variety than the band's earlier work.
(2002) BURY ME STANDING - "Razorwire Highway to the Promised Land" (from 'Madeline Ferguson' split)

"Like Flies to Shit" is definitely a mishmash of This Ship Will Sink and The Assistant mixed with some nice emo/screamo that some facebook community elitists would probably shit their pants over until the song blasts back into high gear at the 3-minute mark.
(2002) BURY ME STANDING - "Like Flies to Shit" (from 'Madeline Ferguson' split)

Lastly, the final minute of "Dead Air" is a build to an amazing close with screaming galore over some blast breakdowns ala Black Kites and old Cave In and The Bled.
